This discussion shouldn't be focused on college football NOT basketball. In basketball, the season is literally from November to March which is only 5 months. Then, the top players are off to the NBA. College football brings in more money, players have to stay longer and have a much higher chance of getting injured. They are the ones who need the monetary compensation.

Talent is already pooled at the top schools, the reason it wouldn't get much worse if they get paid is that there could still be scholarship limits and walk-ons don't get paid. So a player might want to go to Ohio State, but if Ohio State doesn't want them there would be no change to the current recruiting system. The rarity that someone who is recruited by a bunch the top schools in the country then end up choosing a lower level school, is negligible at best. It would be fair, up until it ends up being a meritocracy. The majority of the money generated by the NCAA is made from the football and men's basketball program. That money is then distributed to other sports, especially the least lucrative sports like college soccer, baseball and women's programs.

Can schools afford to pay $7 million/year for athlete salaries? Example: Top Athletes earn flat wage, similar to other part-time college students. Let's say $20.00/hour X 15 hours week = $300/week for starters, $200/week other team members. Plus, they get free tuition, rent/utilities, food, books, uniforms/gear. At Ohio State/UCLA/Texas/Boston College, first team players would earn package worth $60-80,000/year total. Not bad for 18-22 year old college student-athlete. Do you think colleges/universities could juggle things, downgrade some sports from "team" to non-paid "club" status, make it work? If 500 players earn salaries, schools would spend $7m/year in salaries. Comments?

For the true amateur sports fan this would be the end of college sports, it would simply be glorified B+ league sports, displaying more greed and forcing price wars in the amateur games, raising ticket prices everywhere and in my opinion ruining the amateur sports world on the whole.
I have lost all interest in professional sports due to Pro athletes greed and paying amateur athletes would only increase the issue and eventually negate the desire to watch, there is NO actual need for it as it is ONLY entertainment making athletes entertainers on the same level as actors meaning they are not actually necessary to sustain life.
We would soon be seeing T-ball level kids being compensated for their play and refusing to play unless they got an I-phone, Play Station, that trip to Disney Land or some damb bling.
Every sports announcer supporting paying amateur athletes simply vues it as an opportunity for them to also make more money.
We grow up as children playing sports solely for the purpose of playing the game, the LOVE OF THE SPORT, it should still be about loving the game and ONLY the VERY BEST deserve to get paid for it and when they have proven they deserve it, with skill, ethical and moral values and continued respect for the game and above all respect and a sincere APPRECIATION for those that are willing to pay THEIR HARD EARNED MONEY TO WATCH ENTERTAINERS PLAY GAMES FOR A LIVING.
If college athletes ever start getting paid the I walk away, and attend more high school or elementary school sporting events.
Remember the real reason for playing in the first place, For love of the game.
