I only known of SPB after his death. Don’t be surprised. I’m from Nigeria and we love Indian music though we don’t understand the lyrics. But with the internet now, we can always Google to seek an English translation of the song lyrics. Rest In Peace SPB you were larger than life in your music. Now I will have to listen to your son SPB Charan and other artistes. My sympathies to your wife, children, and to India 🇮🇳.
Same with me too. Although I have heard some of his Hindi songs, I never knew the magnitude of his contributions to music in India. As a foreigner, I too started listening to his songs in earnest, only after his demise. I am quite ashamed, how much I have missed all these years. Now I go searching for translations of his Tamil an Telugu songs which are so mesmerizing. Sir, while you can still listen to Charan, SPB sir's live performances are available in plenty on the internet. Pl. watch them for the beauty of the music and for the sake of the love and humanity which Balu sir gives to the world. God bless his soul.

As an oldtimer, I've always found SPB Sir's voice, notwithstanding its uniqueness, similar to Rafi Sa'ab's in terms of melody, pitch, range n above all, ROBUSTNESS. No wonder, SPB Sir could sing the iconic song from Dosti(1964) with consummate ease. And the improvisation in concluding the song OMG was just fantabulous!!

Just listen to the songs of spb.....though he says he love rafi...it's his humble nature...he sang about 50 thousand odd songs...I'll point to atleast 100 songs which are almost impossible to sing for other singers with same sensibility as spb sang them.... For the record i have listened to nearly every song of rafi, since spb considers him as his inspiration..It doesn't mean rafi > spb..

Again, I see many viewers comparing SPB to Rafi which is totally misplaced. Rafi was a trained singer and had a classical background; but, SPB is totally untrained (like Kishore)...SPB's repertoire is very limited (like Kishore's) and within that limitation he has rendered great songs. Rafi had a range from pure classical, Ghazals to absolute rap songs and even yoddling he could do..Rather than compare, we should appreciate the great songs that these people have given us...
