  • #Surge_protection_device installation and working principle of #SPD and its inner parts are explained here in this video well with fine animation work.
Surge protection is needed for #Electrical_safety and are designed mainly to protect equipment against #transient_voltage surges that appear and disappear in just a few microseconds.
Although the duration of these spikes are very short, large single surge events such as lightning, can reach hundreds of thousands of volts and can cause immediate damage to the equipment.
These surges cannot be stopped using conventional over current circuit breakers or fuses, since operating time of those switches are not quick enough to detect these fast appearing spikes.
However, lightning power spikes account for around 20% of total transient surge activities only.
The remaining 80% of surges occur internally, when a motor starts or some other supply line fault outside of human control.
Although these surges can be of smaller in magnitude, with a higher frequency of occurrence, and with continued exposure, they can degrade sensitive electronic equipment within the circuit.

can i connect SPD direct to main breaker line side instead on load side?

      Yes.
But for any maintenance work or device replacement work, you should have the main switch before the SPD.

      Yes.
But you should have the main switch before the SPD for isolation of it for maintenance or replacement work.

If SPD is connected to the output of meter, how will it protect the meter? It will only harm the meter as all the surges are grounded through meter. Let me know if I am wrong.

Meter belongs to you or ut company?

@@vikramkoodoye1418 It belongs to me. If it goes bad, I have to buy new, get the calibration certification and request MSEB guy to install and pay him too. Pathetic.

If your meter is with electronic parts, it will withstand a voltage spike upto 1500 volts without getting damaged.
General practice is to install the SPD after the main switch, because isolation of the line is required for replacement work.
