Probably best to give this bit of utter class the full respect it deserves by playing it extremely loud and avoiding looking at the bizarre spectacle parading around in front of you...
I asked Theo about this and his typically dry, hilarious response was gold...I was bored shitless and wanted to get this song out of the way so we could record our next flop"...a good man
Ha ha The Atlantics 1967. Gotta give them credit for resisting the British influence must've been hard. Still playing like early 60's American surf/rock bands with the corney keyboard sound and goofy hairdos
I'm mesmerized by the singer's wig. The crescendo in the chorus, the distorted and chaotic solo and the shouty and careless backing vocals... probably one of the great garage songs of the 1960s.
I went to an Atlantics concert about six years ago and Bosco the bass player did the vocals. I didn't think much of some Australian bands until I went to the concert"Long way to the Top". Some Australian bands can display incredible talent when you see them live. Russell Morris once performed an entire concert on acoustic when his electric was stolen...Billy Idol on the other hand refused to perform when the electric enhancement did not operate. So much for English superiority.
I shouldnt have listened to this song so much. I always have an aching back and often my blisters turn black. Damn you Atlantics for your catchy riffs and inspirational lyrics!!
great song ....had the orig 45 years ago... got it on cd nice to hear a cleaned up recording.no it's even greater putting a face to this 60s gem THANKS
Great! I was in Sydney in 1968, but The Atlantics were not as huge hits as were the Beach Boys in the USA at the same time. Promotion and air-play was probably the difference. Well done for The Atlantics! BTW, in this video the singer's head had a ceramic image of human hair attached with epoxy cement to his skull.
Back in the early sixties in Australia when the Beatles hit it big, kids could buy black plastic Beatle wigs. I remember the neighbor kid had one and I got to try it on once. What a thrill that was. Well, I believe that's what lead singer Johnny Reb is wearing here.
This is just brilliant. I wonder whether it was an original? The other thing is, a guy with hair exactly like that gets on my bus every day. He's about 60, so it could even be him!
I had never heard this song...it is really great and shows even then, in the music business you need talent plus luck...and some money helps. This song is really good, stands up to many of the same kind of songs by big band about then. Interesting to think how far advanced the Beatles were then, just about when this song came out, Sgt Peppers made history. This video is a great salute to all those grage band over the years that never made it big, but were damn good.
They started out as quite possibly Australia's premiere surf band, with local hits like "Bombora",which I think the 90s group named themselves after, but they obviously only got better. Please upload some Wild Cherries and Throb !
I heard these guys for the first time yesterday and was blown away. Seems like every one on the '60s garage scene really had it going on. I thought ours couldn't be topped. Great video!
Insanely good. The verse is great, the middle 'without your loving' bit is my favourite bit, and the chorus is great as well. Each time we go to a different part of the song it's both novel and familiar at the same time. Songwriting can be so simple when it works. I'd only known the Atlantics for the instrumentals, and then you hear this, an absolutely awesome garage/surf/mod rock song with all the surf-y reverb and toms. True the singer isn't exactly stevie wright, but who is. They probably didn't want a front man getting all the attention. And be the Shadows to his Cliff. He sounds great.
This is on my nuggets II c.d. box set and it's one of the songs I really love playing drums to. I really dig this tune and seeing the vid made made it real for me! thanx for posting ;)
Thanks for the reply. I just did a search on Johnny Rebb on Yahoo and it says he was born in 1935; that means he must be around 72 now and was around 30ish in the video. He looks younger in this video; he looks more like he's in his early 20's. Hard to believe he's that old now.
great stuff, though I must say the lead singer looks like Robert Reed, circa 1969 Brady Bunch before the he donned 'fro. Nevertheless thanks for the song dude-a-son....
I plan to go to the beach next weekend thank you. I'm also drinking ice cold Cuba 59's. I like most music and just ask that you give some Aussie bands a chance(i.e.Axiom) Aussie has a low population density which prides itself on sport. It was a long way to get off this isolated island to tour America or Europe with it's entertainment. The Atlantics were big fans of the Shadows as I am. Yes,Britain has produced a lot but even Aussie has outdone France in music which makes me feel good.
People: Before you judge, remember the Cold War was raging at this time, and the fastest way to get to a nuclear bomb shelter was to wear it on your head.
It's the first thing that I thought when I saw this otherwise very cool song. I knew the song from the Nomads from Sweden. But I never thought that it was a cover. Very rare though and goes to show that there is more in Australia than the Gibb Brothers.
I suppose, since you have put it that way, Aussies come in at 3rd.place behind Brtitain and America when it comes to rock music. I also support your comment regarding Aussie sport;Aussies are clearly world leaders in that field.
i guess i didn't realize that music was really happening elsewhere besides the states or the u.k. at that time until i found these aussie videos here on youtube---can someone bring the allusions "the dancer" back up???
This is a fantastic work!, but if it's in '67 as the title says, then it's about a year too late. It's kind of a '66 sound, which would explain why it didn't catch on.
@jbrown1169 Welcome to TV in the 60's, look up almost any show and the performances are mimed or the guitar and drums are mimed and the lead singer did a prerecorded version of the vocals. The rest of your comments are just head scratching and I won't even comment on them.
It's weird that the leader singer's style doesn't match to their music & what you would think the band would look like, but it works for him. I liked the song, never heard of these guys before.
All joking aside...surely we all agree this is a f-in awesome piece of work...5 decades, more or less....Come on!!!!
I swear I'm the only 22 year old who totally loves the Atlantics....:) great song!!
Probably best to give this bit of utter class the full respect it deserves by playing it extremely loud and avoiding looking at the bizarre spectacle parading around in front of you...
i just love the way the song sounds. from the first drum wack to the cool solo....
That hairpiece should be elected into the Australian Rock and Roll Hall of Fame.
It's an artifact created by the digitization. It's not real!
@@geoffreypiltz271ITS LEGO MAN HAIR! WOW WHAT A RUG BUT WHAT A SONG!
@@FormerMPSGT I know it looks funny but the effect has been created by the digitization process.
The Atlantics are soooooooooooo good!!! Heavy guitar solo, riding bass. I love the Aussies. There's nothing like them. Thanks Tom!!!!
This is a super group and a master great song!!! The Atlantics definitely are one of my favorites. Thank you for sharing!!!!!
The guitarist on the right is my new role model. That coolness at about 1:32 is epic. Not too many examples of that level of fu factor pre '67.
Theo Penglis - fantastic guitar player!
Well spotted. That’s brilliant.
I asked Theo about this and his typically dry, hilarious response was gold...I was bored shitless and wanted to get this song out of the way so we could record our next flop"...a good man
The drums and bass are so keyed in!
Ha ha The Atlantics 1967. Gotta give them credit for resisting the British influence must've been hard. Still playing like early 60's American surf/rock bands with the corney keyboard sound and goofy hairdos

This is without doubt such a fantastic song..perfect lyrics ..all round darn perfection.

Bloody hell, this is a killer track.

Heavy.. good band heavy thick sound, clear vocals.
on of the greatest tracks in history !
This is just brilliant. I wonder whether it was an original? The other thing is, a guy with hair exactly like that gets on my bus every day. He's about 60, so it could even be him!
Thanks for putting this one up!! Not only is this a great song, it inspired me to fashion a sea sponge or some brain coral into a wig!!!!
wow! these guys where way ahead of their time!! Thats Awsome!!

A first-class sound .. congrats, a great upload ..
who knew Aussies could rock so hard?
They started out as quite possibly Australia's premiere surf band, with local hits like "Bombora",which I think the 90s group named themselves after, but they obviously only got better.
Please upload some Wild Cherries and Throb !
I like to call it a "hair helmet".
It almost looks like the plastic wigs that Devo wore.
Ya know ya like and want it don’t ja!

Without youtube...I'll cry! lolol
If only great music like this would make a comeback in today's horrible music scene! 1964-67 forever!
great stuff, though I must say the lead singer looks like Robert Reed, circa 1969 Brady Bunch before the he donned 'fro. Nevertheless thanks for the song dude-a-son....
This was the Atlantics who were normally an instrumental Surf band massively successful with an original, Bombora.
I plan to go to the beach next weekend thank you. I'm also drinking ice cold Cuba 59's. I

I've tried twice in two minutes moving my mouse over the "The Atlantics - '67" logo as if it were an annotation I could click away.
Groovy tune too.

Lead singer is Johnny Rebb, early Sydney rocker from the 50's.
Love it.
