I love how this couple treat each other. They are so kind and listen closely to each other. Also, Matt thinks he’s not smart, but I’ve listened to every single IWT episode and I think he might be the most thoughtful, self-aware, humble and articulate man who has been on this podcast so far. Thank you to both of you, Matt and Asha, for sharing your story and struggles for so many of us to learn from.

yea im black and many white folks have said this around me and I always correct them. its a awful way to label oneself. for some many reasons it seems ok to do. they are saying it about themselves and of course their situation is far more advantageous than others. but it becomes a way to play small and use that as an excuse to self sabotage, or not try etc. reminds me of ramits label he gave himself as the skinny indian. he admits it was a self fulfilling prophecy. words are powerful and even more so when it is about oneself

I always said we don't have enough money to go on vacation yet. The month before he passed we planned a fun road trip to see his family with fun things to do on the way. We never got to go. I never contemplated suicide but I did feel like my life was over. It's been 1 1/2 years, still picking up the pieces.

You shouldn’t feel remorse. Humans can’t spend money like every day may be their last because we’re not conditioned to think and live like that, it’s just a nice idea in hindsight when we know we could have. As well to be honest it creates more problems for doing it that way, and that’s how a lot of people end up on this show. We may not be here tomorrow or we may live to be 100. It’s the responsible and rational thing to save money as if you’re going to want and need it for the future, and hopefully you learn to enjoy a bit of it along the way. I’m sorry for your loss and I hope you’re getting better.

As a formerly poor person, I have also said MANY TIMES "IM NOT AFRAID OF POVERTY, I VE BEEN THERE AND I KNOW HOW TO SURVIVE" It is even more comforting when you're the only person youve ever known who has overcome it. To others it might sound horrible but to us it makes us feel somewhat superhuman. But you are right that we see money as ephemeral and somewhat disconnected from planning or working hard. I've had to come to these things on my own having married someone who grew up middle class. We're solidly upper class now and have done everything we could to rework our relationship to money.

How her parents were not in support of him, but then his display of love and affection showed them he was perfect for their daughter and thus came acceptance. As someone who grew up with the most basic of provisions, and having to make a way in this world on my own without familial support and guidance, I get how he could feel not good enough. I agree 100% . I know there are many stereotypes about indian parents (mostly true😆) but as a high school passout and probably the only one to do so in my entire clan, I can tell you.. Once I started making decent money, all the relatives appreciated it much more than they appreciated my cousins with engineering and doctorate degrees. My mom jokingly calls me her high return on investment child. So I'm sure Asha's parents noticed that about Matt too and that's why they agreed to marriage. We Indians do love a fancy degree, but that doesn't mean we don't respect the hard work and potential, above all the ROI, how can anyone overlook, getting such a high EQ son-inlaw with money making potential and grind as settling beneath. I think Asha made a great choice and her parents know it too (they just won't say it often, again not in our culture to show appreciation in words) . Matt should be proud of himself, coz we all know Asha is proud of her choice and that shows in her smile

Thank you Ramit, wow, this was literally my favorite episode. Matt is an amazing man, growing up as he did, making the leap to work for NATO and travel the world, and allowing his world view to change. I have met a lot of people with similar backgrounds when I worked offshore and they are mostly stunted in growth, unwilling to see a world beyond their small town and circumstances they were raised in. It was amazing to see him hear your perspectives and be open to shifting his viewpoint and make adjustments to his relationship with money and his partner.
It's also amazing to see so many couples come on the show who make so much money, but are unable to succeed with money due to their money mindset. It has always baffled me that 99% of people are unwilling to spend 10 dollars on a book and completely change their financial life, but your podcast really helps me see why. I have literally given your book to friends and told them it made me a half a million dollars and they still can't be bothered to read it, truly our mindset is so powerful.

This episode was so surreal to listen to. Asha and myself have a similar story - I've had open heart surgery as an adult and additional medical procedures at a very young age.... some of the most important surgeries and procedures happened by the time that I no longer had the umbrella of health insurance coverage from my parents. HDHP health plans depleted any savings I could ever make and I began a sinking fund YoY for my Out of Pocket (OOP) maximums around 4 years ago. This has helped me be able to stay on top of my finances in the last few years. It totally sucks to pay up to $5,000 every year (going on $25,000+ spent on healthcare instead of a home or other debt since turning 26 years old); but perspective is everything. I truly could have it worse.
Ramit - thank you for sharing the story that Asha and Matt have. Asha, all my love and well wishes to you for a healthy future. I think you both will be so happy to look forward to the future you didn't think you'd have together.

It can always be worse. This doesn’t make your experience any less valid. Knowing that every single year we are going to pay the max out of pocket makes it very hard to not be bitter. Especially when we see people around us who have never so much as heard of a co pay or spent hours and hours on phone calls arguing with insurance companies.

Matt if you're reading these comments try not to go towards dark thoughts. It's a beautiful world with many nice people that can help you and vice versa. We need more pure souls to help better our trajectory. Stay strong brother.

I really love this couple. They’re very kind to each other, and you can tell they love and respect each other. The guy is very humble (and maybe has low self-esteem due to his upbringing). She’s a brave, strong woman. I wish them both the best of luck and good health!

Such a great episode and I can relate, my husband was diagnosed with a rare form of nasal cancer in Feb 2020, multiple surgeries, all was going good, then we get hit with it's back AGAIN and without this crazy surgery you have 6 months to live, this was December 2021, well we kind of starting living a day at a time and enjoying life, we got a second opinion and he decided to follow his gut feeling not to go through with the surgery, thank God he's healthy and thriving, but fast forward and now I myself carry close to 15k in credit card debt, just stated living life, some personal health issues that I had to put on the card, surgeries, dental work and here we are, but since I came across your channel, you've opened my eyes more, i was already looking at the future and how I don't like having this debt, but you've encouraged me to want to start hustling again on the weekends and put that money towards my debt. Thank you

It makes me so sad that people have enormous financial burdens placed on them for healthcare, when the health scare is alsredy heavy enough. I live in Canada, and am grateful for our free healthcare system! Socialism is not good in almost every area of society, but when it comes to socialized healthcare, I think we've hit the sweet spot.

Great episode, a great couple with an interesting story. Agree with all the comments on Matt - I find the best shows are when the couple roughly talks equally and are connected, and Matt was very self-aware and humble. The two have had a hell of a life. I wonder where they live - Matt's drawl made me think the south or Appalachia.

I watch A LOT of personal finance videos, and this episode is absolutely top notch content. I love this couple; they're so open, honest, humble, and just generally likeable human beings, and the deep love they have for each other is plain as day. I can't even believe that was an hour and a half, it was worth every second.

Matt, you're bloody amazing, and you did everything right. Asha, so glad you're healthy and happy now.
More power to you both, I'm super confident you'll both get your financials in order. Life throws curveballs sometimes and there's very little we can do about it, but you both make such a strong couple and I hope you're doing well now.

Great episode. I hope this couple gets to enjoy a looong prosperous and healthy life together. I am still half in, but as a European watching this... I feel most of what happened to them, was not their fault to start with. In a more "socialist" society Matt would most likely not have grown up in a trailer, he would have been able to study (if he wanted to, he is definitely smart enough to so do), Asha wouldn't get into medical dept (we have no medical depts, and people get a health-kind-of- pension to help them while they recove before going back to work!). I must admit that I am also surprised/confused on the role Asha's parents played in the economical aspect of her recovery. Or how her rich parents "allowed" Matt to sacrifice all his money prospects to support her, while it is clear that they could have taken some of this burden. But since we don't have their version, I don't feel is fair to judge them. Just my thoughts about this episode. Also their love and bond can only lead them to a beautiful life. I have no doubts.

Hard thing with this dissonance reduction. It took me a long time to realize I may take the step by step approach concerning my candy overeating, and talk to myself : All right, now you're full but you want more. You'll only stop when you get sick. Continuing to feel good is not the way. What if you do some weightlifting for several minutes, then see how you feel ?
