- Week 50 of a series I'm calling "52 Licks." 1 new jazz phrase for each week.
Only a few left! I'm a huge fan of Jeff "Tain" Watts so I was excited to get to this part of the "Magnificent 7" book. Here's a hip phrase that is based in some classic bebop vocabulary but is cleverly revoiced and disguised as only "Tain" can.
Here's a link to the book: dusanmilenkovic...
PDF coming soon (i.e. when I get back from the Holiday Craziness)
Good Luck!

I really like your playing, and the 52 licks series is awesome... an approachable breakdown with a bit of jazz history in each one. I check them out daily, and this has been one of my favorites... the Elvin diddle too. Thank you
I'm getting so much value out of these videos, and you seem like the most humble guy on Earth. Thanks so much!
Thanks, Mike! So glad you're getting something out of them.
Wow, You have helped me accelerate a few months ahead. Keep up the good work
Great lick. Look forward to the PDF coming!
Justin, I would love to see a video of you performing someday. Please post one sometime! Then we can hear all of the awesome licks in action. :)
Here's a playlist I have pinned to my channel's home page.

3:28 for Game of Thrones theme
Nice Channel. I love Jazz, I play guitar, but listening to and learning from great drummers/great drumming is essential to any musician.
I don't think I'd even heard of Jeff "Tain" Watts before this video. Still, that's a great phrase.
OH SHIT! Justin! ha!
Nice,thanks!
Cool 😎
Classic
Bop Jazz 4 Life !!!
Pardon my ignorance , but his phrase reminds me a bit of some of what Ian Paice plays on Deep Purple's live version of 'Highway Star', off " Made in Japan".
Ian, much like his contemporaries Ginger Baker and John Bonham, grew up on jazz drummers. It's more obvious in Ginger than it is in the other rock drummers of the time.
Harrison Myers Yeah, I knew Paice grew up on Jazz, I was talking about those particular motifs in the phrase..don't know if any drummer would agree.
That Game of Thrones theme on 3:28... :')
3:19 "Right, right, left, right, right, left, right, right. Right?"
Yes. It's pretty amazing how often I say "left" but play "right" (or vice versa....)
Please do a Mitch Mitchel phrase. Maybe something from If 6 Was 9.
This is a jazz channel.
No John Riley?? Uh that's interesting...
Can't really hear the video good! But great lick
What's happened with you hair Mr. Kiefer Sutherland?
Roy Haynes told me I'd swing harder if I had his hair cut.
HOW MEANINGLESS IS THIS
Dude... Did you watch the video at all? It's excellent.
