    I just wanted to tell people that the Bates method really DOES work. Our family learned of it in the late 1950s from friends who were naturopaths. They used this method to rid the entire family of glasses. As far as I know, NONE of them wear glasses to this day--that's over 50 years. Even Dad, who was the naturopathic physician, who is in his early 90s--still eyeglass FREE,

      If one eye is a lot worse than another you might have a lazy eye.
      Try wearing an eye patch over the good eye, to make your lazy eye exercise more. You can start 15 a day and work your way up to two hours a day. Its a brain thing , ultimately the brain realizes that it can get input from both eyes.

    1. Stretch & Yawn
    (Stretch whole body and yawn the first thing in the morning)
    2. Yogic eye movements
    (Stretch up your eyes and stretch them muscles)
    3. Nose Drawing
    (Close eyes and imagine the tip of your nose drawing something)
    4. Massage your eyes and face
    (Try to relax your eyes and muscles)
    5. Palming
    (Rub your hands and put them flat on both of your eyes)
    6. Long swing
    (Try to get some air and start swinging your whole body. Keep your head moving simultaneously along with the body moving)
    7. Sunning
    (Get some sunlight and close your eyes facing toward the sun and relax. Don’t squint.)
    8. More palming
    9. Yoga and meditation (Try to relax)
    10. Evening sunning
    11. Night swinging
    (Do it slow this time)
    12. Long night palming
    (Palm on your bed and put pillows on your elbow to relax. Palm long or to fall asleep)
    REPEAT
    Keep taking more vision practices and explore what you prefer or what fits into your schedule. There are other more methods than this video. Keep learning.
    Never quit even if your eyesight got better. The principle of the Bates Method is to relax.

    Hey guys. Bates method and exercises work. I used to have -2.75D on the left eye and -3.0D on the right eye. I followed Bates method and some other personalized exercises for the past 3 months and successfully reduced my left eye to -1.75D and right eye to -2.75D. I need to focus a little more on my right eye. But yeah these methods work. Try it for yourself. It just needs complete dedication and a healthy transformation in your lifestyle.
    Ps: Believe in yourself. You can do it.

    Yep they work, I mainly do the swinging and palming daily and I have gotten some really great results with it. I just need to make sure I am consistent with it daily. Once you start you can’t stop because you become very aware of the strain you have on your eyes that you weren’t aware before. The pain sometimes becomes so intense you are forced into relaxation, when I learnt these techniques I couldn’t go back to seeing with glasses, seeing with strain.

    I'm a highschool student so I made my eye yoga plan to be like this.
    In the morning I'll wake up then take 3 huge yawns to moison up my eyes and stretch my muscles. Then afterwards I'll do palming while in bed.
    When I leave for school I'll do some sunning and avoid using my glasses until I actually have to look at the board to takes notes.
    When I go home I do some more palming, eat some carrots as a snack (since they're also good for your eyes). When I prepare to practice drawing, I place a purple water bottle far away so I can practicing viewing objects from far away as I take a few minute breaks from drawing.
    When I'm ready to go to bed I'll do my final palming and sleep. Repeat.
    This is my Bates Method schdule. Thanks Nathan!

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  9 лет назад +15

      +ParadockMW That sounds excellent! That's a great addition to the nose drawing. What you can also do is nose draw the purple water bottle off in the distance with your eyes closed, then nose draw it with your eyes open. See if picturing the water bottle clearly with your eyes closed helps you see it clearly with your eyes open. Thanks for sharing!

I didn’t do all of them or did it super consistently but overtime my glasses prescription became too much and gave me headaches so when I got my eyes checked my eyesight did got better. But I got complacent over the years and my eyesight got worse. Time to get back on this exercise

      Whoa! That's great that you already have your own personal success story as a foundation. I believe it will be easy for you to get back on track if you just focus on the basics - swinging, sunning, palming, visualizing, central fixation, peripheral awareness, shifting, blinking, relaxing... and stay tuned for some new "vision routine" videos coming out soon!

    Super helpful for someone like me who is just beginning to struggle without knowing where my glasses are. Palming isn't just about darkness, it also inhibits the eye muscles while at the same time removing the stimulus.

    This does work . I had been doing this for three months and my weaker left eye reduced from -4 to -3.5 . I used to patch my right eye and read from edge of blur of left eye in balcony in daylight. And I used to trace leaves and tree branches with both my eyes. And early morning I did swinging . And yes I wore 0.5 less spectacles.

    As a followup to your very concisely outlined routine, I'd also recommend people to take digital sabbath days. It's not uncommon for most individuals today to be spending 40+ hours in front one form of screen or another, consuming not just our physical energy but also placing blockers on much needed mental breaks and relaxation. Digital Sabbaths can be flexibly interjected at any day of the week, or at any set frequency or duration to hopefully reset your sanity from technology. What are your thoughts on this, Nathan?

    Following these exercises and wearing my prescription progressive/myopia glasses less and less, i went down from 100/125 with astigmatism to 25/50 no more astigmatism. If you google the Bates method, it's described as ineffective and controversial, but I'm here to say it worked for me! Forgot to say I'm now 52, stopped wearing glasses from age 45. I don't even know where my glasses are anymore. And when i had an eye check, the doc was impressed, said my eyes were still 'juicy' like a younger person's. I hope menopause won't affect it too much, when it comes.

      @@Ken_livingintheGlory Tbh i wasn't doing the exercises diligently/ consistently but only if my eyes got tired for some reason. I just mainly followed the advice of chucking the specs and not straining the eyes to see or read something. Just look calmly at it and adjust the light if needed. Worst case to use a magnifying glass if the print is too tiny, like on med bottles. I've always had the habit of using electronics in the dark before sleeping but seems it hasn't had a negative impact (yet). At age 46 the astigmatism was still there and i remember the doctor asking me if i already have corrective specs. I only realized that following Bates' advice was working when my vision grades were much lower at age 48 physical exam, and this was maintained at the age 50 exam (my last one).

      +Elizabeth Delgado Yes, the practice really starts to yield results when you make it a daily routine, just like how you brush your teeth twice a day to maintain your oral health, you can do these simple vision practices twice a day to maintain your visual health. The results are even better when you make it fun and interesting!

All in less than 2weeks!! I have like 200-250 spec power. But in a few years I didnt really wear spec. So my eyessoght kinda stagnant. Dont really see many thing but can function. O. James, doing the practices twice a day is great. The flickering you notice after palming is normal too, I experience that sometimes as my eyes are readjusting from the darkness to the light. Sometimes I notice something similar when I start palming as my eyes are going from light to dark. Just keep noticing and staying relaxed throughout.

    • @braunreinhold6020
      @braunreinhold6020 3 года назад

      @Steven Martin Thank you for the information. I don't use any of the wearable products. I use a Potential therapy machine, and a negative ion room purifier. A healthy cell in a petri dish produces 90 mv In your body they are around 30 mv + or -. When they drop below 20mv and below they get sick and die and are unable to rebuild below 50mv. The machine I have is connected to a pad about 18 inches square with silver wire inside and connected to the machine with silver wire. I sit or lay on the pad (insulated from the rest of the room) and my body is enveloped in a static field. I use High potential @90mv. for 1 hour, Negative potential @60mv for 1 hour, then I/F optical setting (a sine wave) for 1 hour. Without getting into a 20 minute post here is increases the ADP ADT cycle and allows your cells to rebuild. You can live tree weeks without food, three days without water, and around 15 seconds without the crebs cycle. Stat in touch and thank you again.

    My (no improvement) story
    I found out about Bates Method in July last year. I stopped wearing glasses and started practising (I wear glasses when driving and during lectures at university) . My prescription isn't big compared to the others who start with more than -3, I have L -0,5 and R -1,5 (and astigmatism in both eyes). I was doing palming, eye movements, near to far shifting, swinging. I was very optimistic and I was feeling that I see better. But then academic year started, I wasn't at home and I almost stopped doing exercises (I was practising very very rarely). Also it wasn't the best time for me, I was a little bit depressed.
    This summer I started again, there were some single days when I wasn't practising. I wasn't so much optimistic as last year, but I still believed I can see better, I was certain I have improved. So imagine my face four days ago when my eye doctor at the begining said that it seems I need stronger prescription in my left eye... Not so much, another additional -0,25, fortunately after further examination he decided that it is not so much necessary and I stayed with my current prescription -0,5 cyl-0,75 axis160.
    Now I even don't have willingness to practice and I am a little sad.
    PS. English isn't my native language, sorry for mistakes

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  8 лет назад +21

      Thanks for sharing your experience so far. Usually the exercises you listed are not enough to obtain full improvement. Most of the measurable improvements come during the vision building phase of vision training, which involves learning how to use an eye chart to stimulate more effortless accommodation. The exercises you listed are an excellent foundation to prepare you for the vision building phase. Have you had any experience with eye charts in your practice?
      Don't let your recent eye doctor visit get to you. Many eye doctors over-prescribe people, it's their job. They also usually don't set up an environment for successful seeing... oftentimes there is some sort of strain or stress instilled in the patient during the examination, which often leads to a worse score on the vision test. You mentioned that you 'felt' that you were seeing better... maybe you were because you were more relaxed or in a more relaxing environment. Your eyes weren't being examined, so they worked normally. When a stranger is shining a light in them they may have gone back to their old strain patterns and made your vision blurry again. You must understand that your eyes are living, breathing organs that change and your vision is a fluid phenomenon that is influenced by many internal and external factors.
      Speaking of the internal factors, you mentioned that the second time you attempted your vision practice you weren't as optimistic, but you were still doing your practices. If you're not fully engaged mentally, you may not see many results from the physical practices. Just doing the physical practices alone, without a certain level of mental optimism, joy, excitement or fun, will decrease the potency of the practices. Your mental outlook on your practice actually determines how well the practices work for you. So if you do decide to give it another shot (which I think you should since your prescription is low and you just started last year... I practiced for over 3 years) make sure you shift your attitude towards the practice, more so as a fun experiment you are doing with your eyes & vision rather than a difficult task that requires lots of hard work and effort.
      Hope that helps :)

    I know a lot of people are skeptical about this. My vision is not too bad, but I would need glasses however I never went to get one. I started doing these relaxation techniques a couple days ago and to be honest I am doing them now because I find them very relaxing and my eyes do not hurt and are not as tired as they usually were. I incorporated palming into my daily mediation/chill out routine. I do feel improvement in my eyesight although I have not measured it properly yet.

    Thank you Nathan for this video, it is very important to watch. I just want to point out and add a couple of things that i took for my own vision improvement daily routine:
    1) Your eyes and your brain connected to the rest of your body, specially - kidneys, liver, spine, neck... Don't forget about the rest of your body, i"m sure it needs to be taken care of. I am doing joint gymnastics at least once a day, like they show here ruclips.net/video/S2EsyHZalow/видео.html (sorry it's in Russian).
    2) Keep up your mood ALWAYS!!! Always keep your spine straight, always smile (except when you relax), and be happy. A happy person is a healthy person. Catch yourself if you are in a bad mood, fix your spine and smile, think about something good and happy.
    Our emotions is a very strong part that influence our body, our life and our vision.
    3) Feed your body in a proper way. Eat healthy, don't drink alcohol or any destructive stuff. don't smoke, learn to be happy without all the "helpful" stuff.
    4) CREATE and not DESTROY. Always do something creative, think creative, see creative. It is all inside our heads, the way we think is the way we see.
    Again, these are the things that i took for myself, i am not trying to teach anybody how to live. Peace, health and happiness for you all! :)

    It seems to me nearly impossible to abandon contemporary tech like computer or phone today, because internet gives so much benefits of information (Wikipedia, books, Google, RUclips) and sometimes you really may even work in front of your computer all day (like programmers do), it complicates.

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  4 года назад

      It's not about abandoning technology... it is about changing your vision habits when you're using technology. Blink more. Breathe more. Avoid eyestrain and facial muscle strain. Look away from your screen more frequently. Take more short breaks. Use blue-blocking softwares or glasses. Changing your habits can prevent the potential detrimental effect screens have on our eyes.

      Glad you're considering diving in deeper and taking the practices more seriously now. It's one thing to know about the Bates Method but it's another to actually do it and stick with it. Even after wearing glasses for 30 years, you can still retrain your eyes to see clearly without them in the distance. Keep taking them off for up close work, that's good. Consider using a pair of weaker prescription "training glasses" to encourage the healing process to happen faster. My next video will explain the concept of training glasses more, so stay tuned for that!

    Excellent video, excellent advice, thank you Nathan. I'm determined to have perfect vision, just starting out on the journey but very confident. I intend to combine the Bates method along with Urine Therapy, as had unbelievable results with UT in the past and am a strong believer. I have to say, after reading W.H. Bates book, I found it far too technical and detailed, almost impossible to follow. Sorry, that's just my personal viewpoint. Thanks again for a wonderful video.

    Hey Nathan, what an interesting video! When I started doing daily intermittent fasting and eating more omega 3, I noticed my eyesight got better. With this method I will try to get it even better. It's so great to learn how much you can do by using natural methods, rather than forcing the body into needing something that is bad in the long run. The palming seems calming after just trying it for ten minutes. Wow, this is very interesting.
    Thank you and keep up the good work!

    Does the shape of your eye change as you achieve more relaxation? I feel the muscles in my eyes moving and it can feel uncomfortable. My eyes used to stick out more as I forced myself to see, but they now appear to sit further back in my socket and the white of my eye looks bigger and clearer. My vision hasn't become clearer yet, but i'm positive it will.

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  7 лет назад +8

      Yes, it is possible that by relaxing the chronic strain held in the muscles around your eyes that your eyes will start to assume a more natural round shape. Dr. Bates said that the #1 cause of myopia was "the strain to try and see clearly in the distance", which sounds exactly like what you said about forcing yourself to see. The Bates Method attempts to teach you a new way to focus far away, through RELAXATION instead of through STRAINING.

    Okay I will do this for a few months (2-3 months) then get back to everyone I promise. I see many people not responding so I will be the one to give legit answers. My eyes are currently -7.50 which is bad. If you do read this I suggest trying it because think about this our generation are on tablets and phones and more focused on hard work and money and never consider relaxing until something bad happens or if the doctor says to. If you truly do what nathan says with a lower prescription it will make your eyes not become worse also thats not just all the diet with healthy greens and carrots and good fats will give your eyes the nutrients they need just like your heart and bones your eyes need nutrients to work at their best on top of the diet and lower prescription exercising will bring blood flow to your eyes as well and yet another thing is relaxing and doing the bates method will be another plus. Now think about it all of this will benefit you... the people and doctors saying it wont are just people who havent done it or are just lying because of what these “experts” say. Its common sense that all of these stuff will make your eyes better. Maybe not back to 20/20 but then again it depends on how dedicated and how bad your eyes are. I decided to do this because I admitted to myself that even if my vision does get a bit better im willing to work towards that because that just shows me that I can get better and better to a great eyesight. Anyways I will inform everyone in 2-3 months.

    Hi, I’m a 32 years old woman. Used to wear glasses since age of 6. At age of 23, I got my lasik done when my power was -10L & -11R. After lasik, i still had residual power of -1R only. 9 years later my eyesight is -1.25L & 2.75R (left is constant for past 2 years but R got changed from -2 to -2.75).
    I’m an IT professional, so spend most of my time in front of computer.
    I’m totally disheartened right now because i took eye exam today only and i don’t see any end to my constant vision deterioration.
    Will this method help with my vision history and present work profile ?
    Even if i cant reduce the power of my glass, can i at least make it stop growing ?
    Please advice.

    • @NathanOxenfeld
      @NathanOxenfeld  2 года назад +2

      Hello, yes the Bates Method has helped people with -6 myopia and higher. Start slow and go one step at a time. It's all about relaxation, so prioritize your palming, swinging, sunning, etc. as ways to relax your eyes and mind. You could also consider experimenting with training glasses that are lower strength than -6, which might feel more comfortable as your vision improves naturally over time.
