Thank you for the book recommendations. I have many books but none that delves into these important components of oil painting like these three books seem to do. I’ve ordered one and will add the other two in a month or two. BTW, you’re an amazing painter and I love when you release a new video!

My sister just gave me the first book a couple of weeks ago for my birthday. It's a great book. It gives a lot of information without overwhelming you. I want to get the other 2 books. They look great too.
I have the last two books and would absolutely agree that these two books are great. I don't have James Gurney's book, but love his work and often watch him paint on social media.
Thanks for the video. Look forward to the second two books but can’t agree with the first choice. I bought the book some time ago and tried multiple times to get through it because he is so knowledgeable. While it has some great info, it’s a hodgepodge collection of aspects of painting not presented in a logical progression that builds on the previous topic. After re reading several times, I finally tossed it so that I would not attempt to put any more time into it when I realized I never incorporated any of it into my work due to the fragmented way the material is presented. And his color sense and painting style is that of a very dated illustrator’s look. Would only buy with an option to return it because I think many readers will feel similarly.

But in terms of my own style and growth as an artist, I've learned the most from the books I’ve mentioned, even though I’ve read hundreds of others. I’m sure there are many more amazing books out there that I haven’t discovered yet. If you have any suggestions, please feel free to share them!
Yes, it’s amazing! Did he happen to study under David Leffel? Their styles are quite similar, although David is already a legend, and honestly, no one can really compare to him.
Best books for painters to have and will always refer back to: Edgar Payne on composition Carlson - Landscape Helen Van Wyk- on color Helen Van Wyk - on Florals (still life)… E. J Robinson - first book on Painting Ocean (his 4 books are all different) and great for seascape/ water painters 1:30 this author took the information from Carlson book..

I've been painting and drawing for 55 years, want to learn how to paint? Then paint, it's the best way to learn, it is an acquired skill, the more one does the better one gets. Books can help but there's nothing like experience.
I agree with you! 👍👍It’s clear that reading alone won’t teach you how to paint. However, if you only practice painting without learning the theory behind it, your progress might be slow. You could end up repeating the same mistakes over and over without really improving. That’s where books and theoretical knowledge play a crucial role. In terms of importance, I’d say it’s about 30% books and theory, and 70% hands-on practice. What’s your take on that? .😊😊
You're absolutely right! If you understand everything about light and learn how to solve specific problems, you'll master painting. Talent isn't necessary-it's just a word. Behind every so-called "talent" is hard work and dedication. It's easy to read about something, but putting it into practice is where the real challenge lies right ? 😊😊
@ I think it takes obsession too. Not just passion. It is hard work. I think A person with talent will progress more quickly in the beginning. Beginnings are quite short!

Whether you’re into watercolor, oils, acrylics, or even digital art, this book has so much to offer. Personally, I specialize in oil painting, so I’m not the best person to give you tips on watercolors.

I like Carlson’s landscape book, and allá prima 2 as well.
I also have both of these. Carlson was in the line of great Tonalists, so you can't go wrong with him.
