She has a lot of songs that are just for fun. She’s either making fun of herself (like in blank space or 22) or someone else (like shake it off and this one)
She made this a super poppy song because her ex Jake Gyllnhaal hated pop music and she wanted to make sure he heard this song everywhere on the radio because he kept wanting to get back together. I love petty Taylor

you have been listening to her pop stuff, but she is actually very versatile as an artist! Her most "poppy" songs were made with Max Martin. She started in country and switched to pop, but she has some more pop rock songs (on her 3rd album Speak Now which was entirely self written) as well as more recently folklore/evermore which is still pop but harder to define! I think she can write for many genres and her true gift is as a songwriter (although she is so good at performing as you mentioned!)
There's nothing pop about Folklore and Evermore. Literally nothing, not even the structure of the songs. Those are indie/folk albums, with a bit of country and alternative rock.

I think the reason Swifties come to these videos is that there is so much fun to be had in watching people fall in love/appreciate Taylors great storytelling, poking fun at the industry, jumping genres all while being a songwriter/singer at the base.

Don’t worry about the Joe comment, you are playing guitar with Taylor, you don’t need to know who she is dating. He does seem like a good guy for her. He doesn’t care about fame, he’s an actor who doesn’t seem interested in all that. And I think that is one reason why she is with him, she has tried very hard for the past 6 years or so to be out of the spotlight (it will never happen), but I think she’s trying to have whatever normal life she can with him.
I love this rock version of the song. I think she wrote this around 21-22? This is a good song, she’s not whining about it, she’s taking control and saying no more. The cycle ends now. She means it. It’s a great empowering song for women, or men, to end what just isnt working and we all deserve better and someone who treats us well.
You mentioned that this song sounded deliberately pop, because you're 100% right! This is her first song she went fully pop from her country root because the person she wrote this song about definitely had prejudice against pop music, so she wrote this song simply to annoy him.
Since you're also a songwriter you should really react to her "the making of" series that she made about how she wrote most songs on her 6th album. It's really great because you see everything from when she comes up with the concept from her helping with the production to come up with the final song.

I find it hilarious that you got that she was making fun of pop because she has said that she made this breakup song as pop as possible (on an album that was still labeled "country") because her ex hated pop music HA.
She's very intentional with her tone and production, including personal easter eggs both petty and interesting: "dear john" has a very John Mayor style guitar, in "betty" she uses the names of her close friends' children for characters, in "soon you'll get better" she features the Dixie Chicks because they were her mum's favourite band.
In Betty, she also used a Harmonica to sound like Bob Dylan, and ended the song with a Dylan chord sequence that is very noticeable😂

Her band is so awesome! Some of them are old guys who've been with her forever. She purposely rearranges her pop songs to include the band so they go on tour with her, and the reputation tour is a great example of that!
I really appreciate your introduction and addressing your take on gossip, as someone who also - while also not claiming to be above anything - doesn't like to engage in perpetuating assumptions about the personal lives of people I don't know. That said I think Taylor's music is difficult to discuss without any curiosity when one of her most significant assets is storytelling, fans love the vulnerability of her music, and until folklore she believed most of her songs had to be personal stories.
I honestly think you've been really great about interpreting the lyrics and speculating without being at all disrespectful or assumptive! It's a hard balance with Taylor's writing in particular, but you strike it by actually talking about her musicality and lyricism rather than *just* the inevitable context/topic (aka the superficial "who's who" of the stories) and that's why I've been enjoying your reactions so much!! As someone who's terrified of "swifties" even as a Taylor fan I promise you would *know* if anyone felt you were being upsetting, so don't overthink it. Her lyrics are important to react to. :)
I can assure you swifties don't spend their time talking about her exes. It is literally the general public that does. We got here through the music, not the gossip, unlike the people who know her primarily as a celebrity.

taylor's band is amazing! on the 1989 tour, she brought out different special guests every night and the band had very little time to prepare the song they were going to sing.

You understood We Are Never Ever Getting Back Together PERFECTLY. She was still a country artist when this song dropped, and she made it EXTREMELY pop and repetititve just to make her ex annoyed (and of course, this way the song would be played everywhere and he would be even more mad haha)
For the next one, you REALLY REALLY REALLY should watch her perform All Too Well at the reputation Stadium Tour. The videos you'll find on RUclips are very low quality, but the whole concert is available on Netflix, and All Too Well starts about halfway thought the show, it's an only voice-and-guitar performance and it's AMAZING.

I'm a swiftie and didn't know who joe alwyn was. And honestly I've only seen him in 2 movies which i only watched for taylor. If she didn't date him, he wouldn't be on my radar.

Something that I LOVE about Taylor is that she always plays with a live band.
when the venue allows. She didn't for the 2018 AMA's; and some other shows where she was a guest. But, whenever she can, it's live!
I think that is very difficult to talk about taylor songs and no be caught up in all the gossip surrounding, but you are doing on a very respectful way.

I think there are others, this is just what I remember as I'm typing this. Especially in the reputation Tour, the band was placed in a very cool place but you can't find the specific songs in RUclips that highlights them because of copyright.

1984 baby here. I don't like to know anything about people I admires personal lives. BUT Taylor makes a game out of her music for her fans and being a swiftie is like being in an exclusive club. She respectfully tells us what she's comfortable with us knowing and true swiftes are happy to share in the fun. It's such a brilliant marketing technique and she has finally mastered the art of keeping her private life to herself while sharing her perspective on things. She's such a smart woman that has used music to teach us that we're not crazy, everyone goes through bad relationships and stupid decisions. "We're all breaking up with our boyfriends" made me LOL okay done ranting.

It is part of a tour video filmed in the Olympic Stadium in Sydney Australia; Apple Music filmed it and had it as an exclusive on their site; but just after Lover was released and she got into the argument with Big Machine over what she was allowed to sing at the AMA's that year, Apple took it down. It seems to be on RUclips, for now, anyway. There is a lot of behind the scenes stuff, especially about guest artists who appeared at various times in other cities. But to see the video, you used to have to be subscribed to Apple Music.

She has a wonderfully quirky sense of humor, and a laser guided homing instinct to puncture the overly hypocritical, hyper-critical pompous talking heads. According to her, the best revenge is just having more fun than the people who hate you. She is a poet; but largely self taught after the 10th grade or so.
Part of the joke is that she was always raised to be a "good girl." Rich parents (dad worked for Merrill Lynch, mom was a hedge fund consultant), so, good manners in public. Private christian elementary school, public middle and junior high, and touring before she was even a junior. So, home-schooled with materials from the Aaron Academy (Christian focused education).
As a child in Pennsylvania, she attended church, had a couple weeks of Bible camp in the summers, before the parents dragged her off to their vacation home on the Jersey Shore for another couple weeks. She's so good on stage because her (coloratura soprano opera singer) grandmother got her into children's theater at around 8 or 9 yo. Her public persona is someone who is always poised and polite, doesn't swear, didn't have a drink until she was 21, doesn't smoke or do any drugs. Her accent is a mix of Reading PA and Nashville (from age 14).
And, some people hate that it is all true. But, she doesn't do gospel (she did have a gospel group as an opener on an early tour, though.) The parents of young women loved her; every headline tour was a theatrical pageant of storytelling without a lot of vulgarity. Her fandom wasn't just girls, or she never would have had that success. Check out her album sales on Wikipedia sometime.

I wish the VH-1 Songwriters would put this in their listing; they were the ones who filmed it. They still have some other artists. Love your videos, Andrew! I recommend watching Miss Americana on Netflix and Taylor's 2019 Billboard Woman of the Decade acceptance speech if you want to understand her and her music a bit more. They are a good intro for anyone who is not a Swiftie or just someone who closely follows every aspect of her career.

Hi, I really really hope you see this because I absolutely adore the very beginning of what she plays and was really hoping to find out the chords here. I'm unsure as to whether you had said them in the video but if you see this could you please please let me know. OK last comment ha. A bit of a different video idea, but your reactions have made me really interested in hearing your thoughts about her song "I know places", and Vance Joy's acoustic cover of it(which Taylor shouted out, she also covered his song "Riptide"). I think it'd be cool if you listen/react to the song and then Vance's acoustic cover.
The song is essentially about evading the media, and I think you'd appreciate the analogy/lyrics, and feeling of it - I find Taylor's voice especially emotive in it. And I'd be interested in your thoughts on Taylor's lyrics performed through different styles, not to compare *against* but to talk about musicality, the style of Vance's guitar performance, the tone, and the lyrics.

I just wanted to say I'm enjoying your reactions to Taylor's music, too, and also your general attitude of low-key good humor & thoughtfulness. Really nice to see someone approaching music that's not their usual type of thing with such open-mindedness and positivity. I'd like to second this commenter's recommendation -- I think there are some really interesting covers of her songs out there that would give you a chance to talk about how different musicians can approach the same work, and also consider how Swift's songwriting/composition holds up outside of her own performances. Taylor said in an interview that the guy this song is about was complaining about how some band he was listening to was getting too popular because they were able to draw 100 people to their shows or something. Which of course begs the question of what does he think about her seeing as she had been starting to sell out full stadiums at that point, had multi-platinum records, Grammys, etc.
She also mentioned that what inspired the song was that her ex sent one of his friends after her to test the waters by saying "hey I heard you and x are getting back together", and she didn't even know who he was because this ex "never introduced her to any of his friends".
If the song is about who we all think it is, he was around 29-30 and she was 20-21 when they were dating.
So you do wonder if he was self conscious about his friends thinking he was dating an immature mainstream teen pop idol or something. That could also explain the commitment issues this song (and other songs) are hinting at. If he liked her and wanted to be with her but was also embarrassed about it, then that would explain why Taylor felt conflicted, frustrated and ultimately fed up with the whole situation.

Would you consider listening to a new band? They’re a trio of sisters from Mexico (who sing in English) called The Warning. They’re amazing, very young and musical prodigies. They’re definitely rock, their latest upcoming album is actually very very hard rock lol. They’re best heard live but they just released a official video for their latest single called Evolve. I think you’d really enjoy it. They’re so passionate and give 110%, eeehhh 150%. Anyways, us fans are called The Warning Army. And although we aren’t anywhere near as numerous as Swifties(whom I love btw) but we are loyal as hell and they’ll swamp your page lol

this one's for the swifties who attack people for not knowing taylor swift's life. to all of us who really really hands down love her music, and know storylines and who might this song be about- expecting people who are doing music reactions to her tracks to know exactly who and what her ex and current are is very funny. why would someone outside of the uk know a budding british actor? unless you've watched some movie of his and saw more of his work- or know him through swift, he is relatively unknown, however most swifties refuse to accept that. he is also much younger and thus a more recent face. jake Gyllenhaal, tom hiddlestone are incredibly famous artists, as is mayer. also they're older and have had many years in the entertainment industry. jonas, harry and calvin are all extremely known faces due to music. Joe is just two years younger; atm, he's 29 and she's 31. Not quite like the age difference as between her and Mayer (12 years) or Gyllenhaal (9 years) or Harris ((~6 years older). Then there are the other younger boys: Styles (- 4 years), Lautner (-2 years), Kennedy (-5 years). I think the only time she was with someone exactly her age was Joe Jonas? which lasted about as long as many high-school-age romances. I had to look up the ages, bc all of it is irrelevant after the fact. Taylor excels at describing and parsing out emotional nuances. Her later songs are probably about how more than one ex made her feel. All of Taylor's previous romantic interests (aside from Kennedy) were in the performing arts--either singers, producers, or actors. And, she is very interested in acting. ( Kid brother Austin Swift is an actor and now a film director.)
As far as a measure of fame, they work in different fields. There really isn't anyone alive who is "as famous" as Swift for the last 10 years or so.
@@robertthompson7242 if you google joe alwyn, all of this information is very much available. someone reacting to her music does not need to do this homework. however- and this is not to mock the actor- her other exes were more famous- irrespective of what field of arts they were in.
also i hope you realise acted in 10 movies (and having seen a majority of them) his roles - unless you're a swiftie or an absolute fan of his his exposure and screen time is les. i mean he plays a character. does it make him stand out and become an intense sensation? no. i believe he is talented and will make a mark- but again, not knowing taylor swift's boyfriend or not studying HIS wikipedia page does not warrant for hate.

you realise joe alwyn was 25 when he met her? unless he was a teen sensation or a child actor- 25 is pretty normal for a person to start getting roles/ gaining fame. Tay has been here since she was 15- a huge career spanning 15 years now.
giving me information on joe alwyn does not make him famous. let her music- "which ex is this about" be open to interpretation and even more so- to fit a listener's own mindset and personal spaces.

Point is, I don't think fame as such matters to her; it is only the stans that keep score that way. And, her experience with a such different people infuses her music, because experiences make you who you are.
But my opinions don't matter anyway, I am just glad they are happy; and I am happy with the music.
