Yeah I've had no idea what he's been doing until he said Mars simulation in this video.
@@hammeredtravis - he does cover it in early videos, but he falls into the trap of thinking every viewer knows his channel as well as he does.
I say let him do what he wants. It'd be nice for newcomers sure, but the series is short and it'd be weird starting in the middle of the series. The pressure of being a youtuber for the sake of audience haven't been kind to Cody, leading to the slight depression he had earlier this year.
@@AnakinSkyobiliviator - we can both let Cody do what he wants, and make suggestions for improvement. No one has a gun to his head. Also, it's not like he abandons RUclips promo techniques, he still puts the effort in, so, might as well catch some low hanging fruit.

Hey, for the composter, my Wife and I have a similar one of those rotating types, and we found we had good results filling ours with a bag of Cow Manure, some Horse Manure and the bedding fodder they sleep in/on in their paddocks, some semi-sifted soil, and a bunch of garden and kitchen scraps.
It's November anx we are STILL growing tomatoes!!! They're Cherry style varieties (Burpee brand) known as Italian Ice and Sun Golds if I remember right. These plants are still somehow producing fruit, without a greenhouse!
We've also used natural fertilizers throughout this last year (Ecoscraps is an EEEEEEEXCELLENT FERTILIZER!!!), put some epsom salt on at points throughout the year, used rehydrated powdered milk for mold control, and have Marigolds planted around the garden to mostly control insects.
Our irrigation system broke at the height of Summer, and the garden STILL produced like crazy... AND STILL IS!
We've also been partially utilizing what is called the "Ruth Stout (Staudt maybe?) Method" of gardening as well, which is we covered the whole thing in an 8 inch thick layer of hay at the start of the season about a month before planting. We had to use fresh hay, as that is all we could find, and it was wheat grass hay instead of just grass hay, but it works well that way too. We havenot had to weed but twice, and that was to pull up the wheat grass that was growing from seeds left in the hay.
Next year the first layer of hay will have fermented and decomposed into a base layer of "pre-soil", on which more hay will go, and plants will be planted through. After next year we'll have a nice thick layer of "proto-topsoil" in which we'll just keep adding hay. The nutrients from the decomposing hay will fertilize the ground, and the hay will maintain soil temperature and moisture content. We found that even with 17 tomato plants, inside a 36 foot long garden bed box, we only had to water for maybe 15 minutes every day or every other day. Oh yeah, we built a 35 inch wide by 36 foot long knee high garden bed from 4x4 ground contact timbers, and filled it with a loooooot of dirt... 10 cubic Yards of dirt I think? Somethung like 2.5 tons I want to say.
I should also mention we live in Alabama, so our temperature this year has so far not been super cold until just recently, so that has a good bit to do with it too.
The point though, is the nutrients from the hay and the occasional other nutrients we'll be adding from various recsources should be enough to sustain this garden bed and keep it growing, for longer than the ground contact timbers and steel rebar spikes holding it together will survive the elements.
We've been taking the tomato plants as they died and throwing them around the outside of the bed to dry out (as the ground here is solid clay, we're letting it turn to topsoil and it lets us tread in it to give us a temporary walkway out of the mud around the bedbox) as we can't technically fold it into our compost because of nematodes. We'll be planting far fewer tomatoes in the future and our garden will be heading into our cold weather planting here soon. :-)

You should try the ancient teqchnique of lighting a fire against the rockface then putting it out, so that the rock is weakened by thermal shock.
Also if he had enough water to throw on the rock after heating it up it would help fracture it.

You don't want to make it easy for pests to set up shop right in the box. Plus they'll benefit more from the ability to have good air flow. Bees use numbers and vibrations to keep warm in the winter. Warm enough to cook other insects alive.

as a geologist you should know that your soil might erode fast if nothing holds it down from wind and water
and it takes a while before you get a nice layer of cultured soil!

It would be interesting to sculpt furniture (chairs, benches, other?) into the rock wall. At some point while digging the bee hole I saw a shape that looked like a chair. Maybe a cave with integrated chair and table?
6:32 I've just recently rewatched Martian. And I was confused on how Wattney able to create fertile soil in the first place and not after incident. Which is litterally just solid frozed everything but did he stopped producing human waste? So many questions.

The book has a better explanation of how he got the soil habitable for plants

@@turmunhkganba1705 They die when the airlock blows, and thats the motivation behind mark abandoning the hab and heading towards Schiaparelli crater. However he does mention that some of the soil bacteria survived the vacuum and freezing

That reaction from the rock sounds exactly like when you heat limestone and then place it in or poor water onto it to create Lime. Good chance the heat from the saw mixed with the water created this reaction.
