I cook several pounds of beans at the time, then put 1 1/2 cups per bag in a Ziploc bag and freeze them. So every time I need a "can" of bean, I just grab a bag and dump it in. We use a lot of beans in "Mexican" type foods; i.e. quesadillas, casseroles, burritos, etc. So I pre-season some with Taco seasoning when I am cooking. Gives it flavor and helps get us fast food without stopping through a drive through.

So...this will sound odd I'm sure but... I wonder if y'all are not in your house right now not just because of mold but to learn lessons along the way. I'm sure by the time you get into your 🏠 y'all will have tons of new skills and will have overcome many challenges together and individually... Like pressure canning and probably a good hold on how to reduce stress 😆 Y'all are a great pleasure to watch and learn from. Thank y'all!

I started ordering from Azure Standard three months ago, just to buy cornmeal for my chickens’ cornbread treats for the winter. (I couldn’t find cornmeal for a reasonable price) I didn’t realize how much AzureStandard had to offer. Now, I’m stocking up on everything that is being rationed by the neighborhood grocery stores in my area(Chicago)! I’ve been buying groceries monthly since I retired. One pound of butter a month isn’t enough for two adults. Now, my two freezers are full, and pantry items are well stocked, thanks to Azure Standard.
My son looked at me strangely when I told him we are going to a truck in a parking lot to pick up an order. His comment “ Is it stolen? Because that’s where you pick up stolen items.” Well, now he seems to enjoy picking up our orders and also enjoy the good food and full freezers and refrigerator.
Thanks for sharing your order pickup and keep sharing so I can see what other goodies they have.

Great haul! Love the storage buckets!! Once you get your house in livable condition, have Art make you a cheese cave out of an old refrigerator or get a wine fridge with good temperature control. With all that beautiful milk Alice gives you, you could make some awesome cheese. And, btw, cream cheese and sour cream are really easy to make. I live in Central Florida and make my own cheese, from ricotta to brick and cheddar. Only problem I have is hurricane season - the power can be off for weeks, so I stop making hard cheese that has to be aged in July and start up again in November.

Bri, pressure canning beans is so very simple. Lots of You Tube videos explain the amounts and pressure and times. You will LOVE it once you get it done. Also, throw some bay leaves into your buckets before you store them. Rodents don't like the smell and bugs stay away. Love that you all are storing food. We all need to be doing this, just like Joseph did in Mitsrayim. Shalom and Blessings from Missouri.

Get a grain mill and buy wheat berries. Flour goes rancid but the grain will store for years and retain all of the nutrients and it’s cheaper than flour. I recently bought a Mockmill 100 and I absolutely love it!

I rarely, if ever, comment on RUclipsrs videos. I am a silent observer. However, I have to say, I absolutely love you guys!! Your channel brings inspiration and entertainment to me. It's a good wholesome, educational REALity show, because it's real and from the heart.
I will be picking up my first Azure order tomorrow morning!!!! The closest drop is 2 1/2 hours drive away. I can't wait.
Canning beans was my first canning project. It was so much fun and a little scary at the same time. I thought if the canner blew its lid, I would simply install a skylight. lol. You will have lots of fun canning. It's not as scary as some make it to be, just as long as you follow simple safety protocols. I'm looking forward to watch your experience and excitement on your new adventure of homesteading. Now, since my first canning adventure, I buy beans in bulk and can them in the winter. Try canning smoked turkey leg meat with the broth in with the pinto beans. It's very similar to old fashion (for me) pinto beans and ham hock. I don't eat pork and the turkey legs have a lot more meat. It's really good.
    Thank for sharing!!
    Your friend from eastern VA.

I love Azure Standard! I just picked up my drop a couple days ago. I have had some friends shriek at the cost but I’m not spending that every month. I’m only buying what I need and I may not need to buy it again for a few months. The plus side of this pandemic is that I have changed the paradigm of how I get our food. I have cut my trips to the conventional grocery store down to every other month.

I know I learnt the value of having a bit for a rainy day when I was homeless years ago. Like eating from the garbage homeless not just without shelter. I find so many shop day to day. I like to have a rotating stock. I might not have a year, and I might not eat luxuriously but I have three months to eat twice a day. Which may not seem like much but if a person has nothing that's alot! I think all can do more to prepare for an economic mishap. I started with one bag of dry barley. Work that extra hour or collect cans on the walk home. Every dollar when the stores are full is one meal when they aren't!

4philipp By pressure cooking and canning beans you have some of them already available if there comes a time when you are in a hurry or find yourself in a situation where you aren't actually able to get a water source or fuel to cook the beans. Having a combination of dry beans and canned beans on hand just makes sense since its very difficult to eat beans in their dried form.

    • @4philipp
      @4philipp 4 года назад

Karen Rolling totally agree with that. Especially from a preparedness standpoint you will want to have ready to eat stored goods. I was under the impression Bri wanted to can all of them, which I think would be overkill. From a preservation standpoint, there are better high value foods that deserve potentially limited canning supplies. I rather can tomato sauce then beans.

It was always exciting to pick up our order, for the whole family.😀 I don’t buy as much bulk now that it is just the two of us, but we do still buy sea salt , 50 lbs last years split between my family. It tastes way better than salt from a little round box in the grocery store.

I've been ordering from Azure for about 6 months now. I like that the more you order, the less you pay per pound. It is, however, addicting. My pantry is almost full, but I still want to take advantage of the great bulk deals! I also like that there is often an organic option. I agree with Art, it is very frustrating when the order is late. I live in Washington about 3 hours from Dufur, Oregon (where Azure is) and the order is often a day late. Also there is no guarantee that you will receive what you order, even after you pay for your order. If they run out before your order is filled you don't get it. You won't be charged for what you don't get, but you often won't know until your order arrives. I wish they had a better program that will reserve what you've ordered out of their supply at the time you pay for it. Doesn't stop me from trying. The quality has always been fantastic....like the cultured butter Bri ordered. It is excellent!

I think they have had a lot of issues with supply and demand lately. We used have maybe 15 families at our drop and now there are 50!

I freeze crackers, cheddar cheese, eggs for baking (in ice cube trays then put in freezer vacuum bags) cereal, flour, and the usual veggies and meat and twice wrapped breads. I live three hours to a grocery store so I'm doing my canning for the winter from my garden veggies. It's good to see you find a place that you can order from that you can trust.

Oh, I LOVE LATE JULY products. The white tortilla chips I have in my house all the time as they are low in salt. I'm thankful they now carry LATE JULY at the store I shop in. I couldn't find much organic food until the new store was built. I like to make nachos with white tortilla chips, cumin, black beans with Mexican cheese on top and heated in the toaster oven. YUM! LOVE lentils too! Mmmm... YES! I LOVED the video! Thanks for sharing! Blessings...

We live 2 hours away from the nearest big box store of any kind. The closest town is 35 minutes away and has very limited options. This would be a great thing to look into for us. I would be willing to bet I would still have to travel 2 hours for pickup but I do that anyway. Thank you for sharing this info with us. Edit- yep. I looked it up and the nearest drop is 2 hrs out. I do most of my shopping there anyway so it is still worth looking into

If you're looking into bulk flour, don't forget that whole wheat grains keep much better than milled flour. The tradeoff is that you need your own mill. Which, they make smallholder ones, but the work of milling is the tradeoff for longevity.

1980s We co-op shopped. Our home was the drop off for Amish chickens turkeys etc. That was my job. Here comes a semi truck every month.
We lived in a neighborhood with
    25 home's. We had a couple acres..
We were at the end of our street.
Worked out PERFECT. Saved us a lot of money. People came over and picked up the food. We had another place. A church to drop off the co-op
    food.Which was once a month.
A lot of FUN MEETINGS with more like minded people. We would have board meetings and pot lucks and shared recipes. We made a cookbook.
We had a couple family picnics.
TRADER JOE'S has a great deal for organic 🍇. They are 1 mile from my home. THANK YOU for ALL my FUN MEMORIES of the co-op. Now I am ONLY 1 so I do not co-op. I miss it.
I am BLESSED you had a date time.
GOOD TIMING for repairing the picnic table. THANK YOU JESUS NO ONE WAS HURT AND NO BAGS WERE RIPPED OPEN.
BUYING THE ANIMAL FOOD BY THE TON. WOULD IT BE CHEAPER❓
LIKE YOUR FRIENDS JUSTIN AND MOMMA REBEKAH BUY.
    FUNNY. I HAVE 3 DAUGHTERS
    BRIANA GRACE AND REBEKAH.
I LOVE YOUR DAUGHTER'S NAME FAITHFUL. THAT SHE IS AND GRACE TOO. I JUST LOVE YOUR FAMILY.
I AM SO EXCITED FOR YOU. YOUR HOMESTEAD IS GROWING AND SOON WILL BE BUILDING. I AM THANKFUL YOU USED GOD'S WISDOM TO BUILD. NIT QUICK.
TOOK YOUR TIME. YOU DID THE RIGHT WAY. AMEN.AND PRAY EACH STEP. THAT WOULD BE COOL.
PUT EACH PERSONS NAME ON YOUR STEPS. EACH CHILD COULD PAINT THEIR OWN NAME ON IT AND PAINT A PICTURE ON IT. A HOME BUILT ON LOVE. TILL NEXT TIME. CHOW

You should try canning beans! Saves so much time and space. By space I mean you don’t have to have a pot soaking overnight that might get in the way of cooking other meals the day before you are eating beans.
Homestead Heart and Whippoorwill Hollar both have tutorials to reference.
I’m impressed you managed to get ready for winter this way!
