  • Here is the uncut helmet cam video from the 2014 Reno Air Races. This is the Sport Silver race on Sunday. I have added the ground speed data pulled from the GPS. (Lower right) Due to my radio failing on Saturday, I was forced to start last in the Sunday race. It took everything I had in the airplane and as a pilot to pass Race #91, but I eventually got it done. That 10 minutes was some of the hardest flying I have ever done in my life. Really a great experience.

Nice job! I had my camera on you from the grandstands for a couple laps as you completed the pass. I haven't posted it yet though.

Thanks! It was a lot of work to make the pass stick, but in the end I got him.

Since I mentioned it, I went ahead and uploaded it. The focus on you and Moran begins at about 2:20 or so, though you are seen on the first lap too. ruclips.net/video/x5RykfvjcUs/видео.html

Thanks so much for sharing this video. I'm going to share it on the Unleashed Facebook page and tell Ryan Moran (the Glasair pilot) about it also. Pretty cool to be able to see both perspectives of the race!

As a fellow 360 owner, this just warms my heart. That was some inspiring flying there. Seriously hard work to balance the formation aspect with the racing itself. Speaking of, what sort of rules exist regarding over taking and see and avoid? Obviously, the guy on the inside line had no eyes on you during the turns, so was it up to you to stay out of the way? It looked like you had him a few times, but being stuck on the outside, you had to cover more ground. So interesting to watch!

Thanks for the compliments. I've seen many of your videos. What was interesting was the drag comparison under G load. The Glasair really bled energy and I saw that on the first lap. So, I pulled back some rpm and experimented with different lines, then ran it back to maximum and was able to make it work, barely. The passing airplane must keep sight until called clear. Inside passes are not illegal, but are rare. It usually happens when someone heads to the wrong pylon, which is easy to do. We call it uncooperative formation. :)

Not to bad for a little 4 cylinder. Nice flying Tom!

Sure looks like fun! What's feeding the speed dial?

My Contour+2 camera has a built in GPS. I exported that data into a program called Race Render. That allows you to create instruments that display the data once it is sync'd with the video. I couldn't figure out how to display the engine data in .CSV format because the time stamps were not recognizable.
