Chinatown was entirely rebuilt after the devastation of the 1906 Earthquake and the conflagration that completely burnt down the original Chinatown. In those days, the main thoroughfare was Dupont Street which was later renamed as Grant Avenue after President Ulysses S. Grant. Dupont Street had been named after United States Navy Commander Samuel Francis Du Pont who helped win California in 1846 during the Mexican-American War.
