I remember being so upset when Golf was the only NES game at a friend's house one visit. I knew he had a NES and expected Super Mario Bros... Which he had left at his grandmother's house 😓
I think the reason most people tend to forget about this game is the demographic disconnect. The NES was enjoyed mostly by kids and golf was seen as more of a hobby for old men at the time (before players like Tiger Woods would later attract younger fans to the sport). If back then you had offered any NES-owning kid on my block a choice of any black box sports game to own based only on the name and the box, Baseball would have easily had the most takers and nobody might have ended up with Golf.
Loving this series. In this episode i especially like/noticed the fair treatment you give this game. Worth noting that I love AVGN and comedy review channels as well, but I often feel like the comedy ends up besmirching the underlying goodness/art of many early games, such as this one. I've played Golf only as an adult (it seemed dumb to me as a kid) and was surprised to experience similar reactions (to yours) in my playthrough. Hey--this is pretty solid, not garbage at all! Also worth noting that i have an Odyssey II and plan to capture some footage of that hilarious/wonky/yet-still-oddly-entertaining Golf game sometime too.
It isn't actually Mario. His name is Ossan, although, he looks identical to Mario, so I always assumed it was. It doesn't help that Ossan was also a name for Mario back in the Jumpman days.
i'd never seen nes golf before so it was fascinating to me when you showed it in one of the game boy world videos - because (besides the latter game's addition of rpg elements) it's gameplay is nearly 1:1 with mario golf for the gbc, a game released 14 years later! i grew up with mario golf and i always considered it extremely innovative and detailed for a portable 2D golf game, having no idea all this time of it's long history so thank you for that! these videos are so great
I love Golf. Had it as a kid, I hack added to my mini, managed 2 personal best rounds of -14 58. Admittedly, it took months of nuanced gaming to figure out how to birdie most every hole, trial & errors. Wii(?) Golf apparently copies this NES course layout.
Another example of convergent evolution in the golf genre back in 1984, No. 1 Golf for the Sharp X1 (programmed by Masashi Muramori who later made Enix's World Golf series for J-PCs and then directed Minna no Golf/Hot Shots Golf up to now), also had a power meter. It was built more in mind for simulation-focused players, whereas the World Golf trilogy was more accessible in response. Recently the game (only released as a cassette) went up on auction, ending at ~$315, which is depressing because it tells me the game's rare and we risk not being able to preserve the cassette image for research and a new digital release.
Hello, great video, but you said the SG 1000 didn't leave Japan, there is evidence to show that it had a limited release in some European countries and New Zealand.
Wouldn't be surprised if *all* the wii golf holes were derived from these older games, then -- maybe I'll look up all the courses to figure out where the origin of each one is. Including Wii Sports Club, there's, what, like 36 or so of them?
3:00 "it's X1 computer"? Hudson didn't make computer hardware, which seems to be what that implies. Also another early golf simulation with stroke power was Tournament Pro Golf on the DECO Cassette System.
NES Golf has replaced SNES Mario Kart as the best Nintendo game ever. I’m 38 and It really is a genius game. Yesterday posted PR low round of -15 (57). Internet evidence appears to show the world record is -21 (51). Cinderella player...tear in his eye...
I think the only golf game I've ever actually put much time in to was Pangya. Played a lot of the online version and even dabbled with the psp version.
The angles of adjustment for the path your ball travels down are way too few, if they had maybe four more options for angles, I would still enjoy this game now. I usually play Turf Masters on neogeo or pocket color instead
Probably the most interesting part to me was the fact some of the Wii Golf courses came from the NES version. Never knew that!
I still regularly play this and NES Open.

Seriously? No Pinball? No Kung Fu? Who didn't get Kung Fu?
This game is incredibly satisfying.
Best channel on RUclips. Love these ones but also can't wait to get more Game Boy World videos.

I use to love this game as a kid. Back in the day it was legit.

Realistically proportioned Mario is the strangest Mario.
Yeah i was waiting for some kind of acknowledgement of Mario's paunch

No, that's my uncle Don XD
Even Captain Lou Albano wasn't realistically proportioned.
It's pretty wild that golf games have more or less stayed the game gameplay wise since this game.

I'm a little bit surprised NES Golf hasn't come to NSO. I guess they feel they didn't need to since they added NES Open Tournament Golf.

+DragoonEnRegalia Interesting info, thanks for sharing!
Leaderboard was my goto game back then but I think that was 86 or 87 off the top of my head.Good episode Jeremy.
love this series, keep up the good work!
Remember my dad drunkenly playing golden tee at the bowling alley 😆
Neo Turf Masters is THE golf game
Golf was very good for a 1984 game. (So was Tennis by the way)
Tennis was a masterpiece!
Clearly one of the very best tennis games in the 80’s.
We had so much fun with this game. ❤️

Wind is the most important issue that makes each shot different. Oh and btw..., I found a trick to get my wind the way I want...
How did you do it?
Lee Carvallo's Putting Challenge
Comes with a free scoring card and pencil!
I had this game in the GameCube "Animal Crossing." I actually liked it, even if my scores were always in the plus.
I never played this, so I had no idea that Wii Sports' golf courses were based on ones in this game. Go figure!

I have this game
I played the crap out of this game

I’ve shot -21 a couple times and -22 and -24 once each

Cliche, but Black Box Golf will always be "That game your Dad bought" to many Americans.
Anyone play konomic golf for gb?
Ya mean Ultra Golf?
I prefer NES Open Golf over this one
"... act insufferable..."??!!
C'mon, now, Jeremy...
"INSUFFERABLY"
