People have really gone nuts! I love how now because there’s no guns in a John wick pinball machine everyone online is saying how we won’t stand for this or this is woke. Where were you guys to stand up when Stern started charging $9,699 to $13,999 for games that aren’t even worth half of that. But because everyone is too political these days when it comes to guns , oh no don’t take that away! Let’s go on RUclips and complain.

I think the difference is that I don't really care WHY they're not there, I think the art package looks dope already. I love making the playfield art city-themed because it makes sense with the continental, and just has that world under glass vibe. I felt like the violence part of john wick can and would be handled in the clips. Just my opinion.
I understand why this video was necessary, but I for one, didn't need it. You may have exhibited more passion than some were comfortable with, but you didn't say anything incorrect.
There is no scenario where Stern comes out of this totally in the right. If they knew about the omission prior to production, they made a bad choice to move forward. If they didn't know until later, they were bad at their business. It would just mean they didn't do the amount of research needed to avoid this.
John Wick is not such an essential property that doing it poorly was worth it, just to be the ones who did it. I wish they had walked away instead of knowingly doing it less than they know they were capable of.
I know that they most likely never get to do a property up exactly the way they want, but when the choice involves things that are integral to the theme, there should be a line. I personally believe they ended up on the wrong side of that line this time.
Spending thousands of dollars on something you know is fundamentally incomplete from the get go because you can then pay even more to make it the way it should have been from the beginning is not a position the consumer should be forced into.
I have added some expensive mods on machines (like my ST lab from Medisynal), but they enhanced a machine that could have been considered complete without it. There's a difference there.
The part that drives me nuts is that the people who would immediately notice this glaring omission are exactly the level of fans who you desperately want. The people who may only buy an expensive toy like this because it is their top dream theme. These are exactly the people who might walk away from it because, in the case of this decision, it was done lesser than it could have easily been done.
Bad choice in the beginning or bad business to not know until it was too late, either way Stern should have known better and you and people like us have nothing to apologize for.

I think the word "toys" was deliberate. I then think the art package was quite simply an oversight. Rather than admit a mistake they say what's true but forgot to realize that didn't pertain to the art.
And like you said, why can you have it in video assets but not art? The logical answer to me is mistake or deliberate choice but not willing to admit either.
Once retro started wearing FlipnOut gear and promoting them it was obvious his opinions were going to bias to some extent. So it seems every game is a BUY BUY BUY so I like seeing your criticism of manufacturers. People with sales and arcade operations behind them will be reluctant to be critical

Maybe the decision was made for a number of reasons- arcade locations may not want the guns in a family setting- pins are exported and sold globally where guns aren’t privately owned so society norms are different. Personally doesn’t bother me but this is the 2nd game where a Disney IP has stipulated the removal of an asset or person from the artwork- Mando being the 1st
Im from the Netherlands. Not a gun to be found in anyones home because owning them is against the law. Unless you are a police officer or in active military will you handle one.
I have lived in the USA for over 12 years now, I have shot rifles, pistols and even a shotgun. It is fun, but obviously not for the faint of heart. It can be a great hobby and is a necessity even for hunting and self protection might you encounter such a scenario in your house where you would have to stand your ground. I find other methods way more effective, but to each their own.
His arguments are still completely way beside the point though, because the discussion was about John Wick not having any guns present on the artwork or being part of the game. John Wick = Action & Guns in the movie so why did Stern remove them from the game? Wildly unpopular choice, I think, but remains to be seen while we wait on sale numbers.
What is even WORSE though, and I don't know how many people actually noticed this, but BEHIND THE DUDE IS A LAST ACTION HERO PINBALL MACHINE! IT HAS GUNS ON IT! ARE YOU FUCKING KIDDING ME?? He dun fucked up.

Part of the problem, in my opinion, is people comparing the USA to small countries that are much more nationalistic than we are. The US is HUGE with a wildly diverse population and geography. Our states are larger in both population and size than many countries. Our take on nationality traditionally leans more towards individual liberty. It's in our DNA - the government doesn't tell us what we can do. Rather, the government must tell us why we can't do it.
I'm perfectly fine with lack of understanding of USA and guns, but to start calling people with guns "stupid" and "losers"?

In the videogames industry weird requests can happen for licenses. It's entirely possible they see pinball as a thing that goes into kids play areas and didn't want poster art of guns around. However, as someone paying a million dollars for a license, I would set that term before hand. "We have a vision for this product are you interested to take our million dollars or not." Maybe you can head to Turner and load up your guns and blast a John Wick Pro. I get the vibe he owns some guns. Lost all respect for Retro. The entire world is chaos. Murder/crime/rape happens in Europe too. "I'll just call the police who will show up in 20 minutes with a knife. You see I'm from Europe." Understand that movies are "restricted" aka "R" rated. You have to go behind an adult wall to see them, so it's possible they requested no guns. I own that same gun you posted in the last video.
I'm with you on the movie clips. If they included those this makes no sense. If I was a nieve parent and didn't know what John Wick was but my kid wanted to play a pinball/arcade game based on it - wouldn't I rather know up front that there are guns involved? Looking at the pin they'd have no idea until the movie clips started playing, if they were even around for it at that point. It doesn't make any sense.

It doesn't look like any mode in the game can have you collect a firearm as a weapon it would have been awesome to collect the dragons breath shotgun as a weapon since they show a clip of it from the movie inside the game 👀

I’m a Brit, but know a few US people who are gun owners. When I went over there, I had two hours training before being allowed to go out on the range (an hour from my friend and another hour at the range itself). No one was crazy or irresponsible, at any point, and I acknowledge it’s a genuine cultural difference originating in the frontier bits of the USA.
I find it desperately silly that you can’t have guns on a pin, according to Liongate, but you can have knives, machetes and nunchucks when most violent crime in London is from… drum roll… knives. Perhaps the British export version of John Wick should only include pencils and bananas in the weapons crate.
George’s comment mentioned 4K. But doesn’t Stern’s screen only display 720p or 1080P?

I only saw that beginning clip so far, and mark my words. This is the beginning of the end for stern now.
We have to band together and help spooky raise their level of quality as they are going to be the new “go to” for the average pin player. Jersey Jack will be the “high end” machines and stern will deteriorate away. It’s time, since c0vid the quality of their machines have tanked. Everything feels extremely cheap even the wood. This is the first public move towards their demise. Venom was a terrible decision, jaws was a garbage design, and now they bend the knee to this trash. A TRUE company would have told the the license holder “then we aren’t doing the deal” -
That’s the KEY everyone is missing. A company with a backbone and integrity would have told the license holder “then we aren’t interested”
And they could have done a fast swap to another game with the same style of design (it’s happened many times before) even something like gladiators which was supposed to be Zelda. - (gladiators rules)

Right now its just an odd decision to exclude something the series is known for. If before each game starts there is a big graphic about how guns are bad then its a problem.

Stern should use some leverage with creative decisions with these mid tier licensing themes. Its a negotiated process. And if the decision is to neuter Mr Wick, Stern could have gotten out ahead of this issue instead of being reactionary.

Cary, you mentioned having the alternate code for your jurassic park...how does it affect game play? I have the 30th and to me, the only thing keeping that from being my #1 is the lack of assets.
Gameplay and code isn't different. It's just replacing the Stern developed video assets to movie assets.

I said it on Facebook and you confirmed it, you were hangry and just came in from a workout. It probably would have been better if you recorded the video and then watched it after you had time to un-hangry and have a shower. You might have rethought the presentation a little. Maybe maybe not. In any event, I get it, I'm a huge John Wick fan but personally the guns no guns doesn't matter to me. Non stop action is what I liked about the movies and for me, that is what I want to see if the game provides. If it does it's a win.
I have benefited from your videos, not new to pinball but new to stern games (Iron Maiden and Deadpool) and you've provided a wealth of information. Keep doing what you do.
Those were a couple of factors, but the main one was the fear that $tern was going the wrong direction. Indeed, I wish I had waited a bit before publishing, but it is what it is.

@@CaryHardy I find it highly unlikely being a RUclipsr that you don't know how the "Playback Speed" feature works on a video to allow for it to speed up without making them sound like a chipmunk. Maybe if you didn't include the billy madison clip and a Hitler quote (seriously?) then you could have played his video at normal speed.

Anyone going to get on a soapbox to ban machetes? We keep hearing about people being done in with them. A British soldier was ambushed in London a few years ago by men with machetes who took their time butchering him while unarmed citizens watched and hoped that someone would save him but no. Guns in the hands of the wrong people are bad. Responsible gun owners make differences and can/do save lives. The machine was a poor choice to go forward with once the firearm restriction was disclosed.

Sorry for going off topic. But I can't stress enough how badly I wish Stern or another JJ, CG, PB, AP, or someone would make a Transformers The Movie 1986 Pin. The musical track list is perfect for pinball, amd of course the artwork and toys would be sick. Just imagine loudly bumping "Instruments of Destruction" while playing. They had BETTER NOT EXCLUDE THERE GUNS THOUGH. In FACT, instead of a plunger, a giant Optimus Prime or Megatron-Galvatron gun should be the ball shooter.

I did stick to it. Those were minor issues, but the MAIN issue was the possible agenda movement into my passion. Pretty sure I made that clear. The other items were merely what probably kept me from making the video more language friendly. lol

I think Stern needs to put more due diligence inside the games they make with a license. This reminds me of Led Zeppelin without Stairway to Heaven. I’m sure Ritchie put effort into some design around it. The Rolling Stones pinball without Gimme Shelter “just a shot away”. I heard a lot of other songs were picked out instead of the ones on there. I was going to watch John Wick until I found out they shoot guns. A lot of them. How ridiculous does that sound. When WOKE comes into something I like… I disapprove by not spending my hard earned dollar on it. Not just with pinball but sports, music, food, etc etc.

I’ve been all over the world and it is different overseas but too late for USA not to have guns. Plus we have an open southern border.
In Egypt I had an armed guard in our bus with a semi auto machine gun plus a cop car with four armed police. It was insane but that made me feel safe over there.
I think alot of people have missed the point that the weapons in John Wick are intrinsic the the movie franchise. They are an absolute feature of the film series and have a huge following because of it. Again though, the same can be said about the pencil :)
Well the way I see it Stern made the decision to go forward if it’s true about Lionsgate and that shows where the new ownership stands on 2A rights. Maybe Stern should’ve made Barbie and let another company due justice to the Franchise. Don’t Apologize Cary for pointing out what they tried to sweep under the rug.

Its a bit wierd, as a Brit, we share much of the same culture as our American cousins. But gun ownership is a concept we will never fully understand.
I have only ever seen guns in a museum, in movies or TV almost like they are some abstract concept that don't really exist.
So the idea that pictures of guns on pinball games must be banned when people have actual guns at home seems just seems so mixed up.
