Pool test: Which artificial shrimp is best?

  • Buy enough live shrimp, and eventually you might have to sell off one of your children. But no one can deny speckled trout love the tasty crustaceans, and many anglers simply refuse to leave the dock without a couple hundred of them enjoying a nice Jacuzzi bath in the baitwell.
    But is it really necessary to spend all that money on the real thing? Manufacturers are perfecting the design of imitation shrimp, and some look more like live shrimp than live shrimp do.
    In order to compare and contrast the features of each and how they look underwater, Marsh Man Masson took a rod, a cork and an assortment of artificial shrimp to a buddy's pool for the latest installment of the Pool Boy series on his RUclips channel.
    The results were eye-opening for him, and will certainly impact his lure choices as more and more white shrimp are sucked out of backwater marshes by falling autumn tides.

    Berkley makes a rattling shrimp that we use a whole lot in the DuLarge area. It really produces and I don't think it has very much action. So, maybe action isn't as important as I've always thought. Give it a test when you have time. Thanks again for a great video.

I am having a hard time figuring how to haul the kayaks. My truck is a GMC and has a toolbox so I have to have a tailgate extender. Can’t find one I like except the Tbone and it is like 230 bucks. But you have to pay to play. Great video and shows the baits that will work the best. The Berkeley gulp shrimp will work on em also.

    I like lures that have a faster fall rate because with a faster fall rate you can impart more action to the lure and the action of the lure also looks more natural. If you ever see a shrimp in distress, it doesn’t swim in a slow, lathargic manner. It doesn’t simply fall slowly to the bottom of the water like in a slow motion kind of way, but rather it would dart from place to place. This is also the way that little fish swim, especially when they are in distress. That’s why I always catch more fish with lures that fall about a foot per second rather than with lures that takes forever for it to reach bottom. The only time that I may prefer a slower falling lure is during the winter, any other times I like lures that fall faster so that I can make them dance in an erratic manner that I like.

    One other consideration is how the lure holds up. I always buy TKO because of price and haven't noticed catching more with the DOA. The big knock on the TKO is the hook constantly slides out of place after a few fish. I always get it back in place, but after the initial hook slide you are going to be doing it almost every catch. Great video, Todd!

    DOA actually make a new version of their shrimp, 2.0. It' smaller and is weighted differently. Also has rattle chambers . On paper it doesn't impress me. I am impressed with the H2O MoJo shrimp. It is basically the same as the VuDu shrimp, only half the cost. I bought several and have used them exclusively as my bait under a cork this spring/summer. I have caught countless reds and a few trout with that bait.

    IMO, the DOA keeps its shape and stays in the strike zone the longest. This gives the fish a better chance to see it. I’m not convinced the segmented tails are as important, because unlike a paddle tail, the bait is fished very slowly.

    Just an idea for a future video would be doing a color comparison underwater in the lake/marsh. I dive/spearfish offshore and in the lake and many times, what appears to be one color above the water, looks completely different when it’s a few feet down in green or dirty water.

    • @MarshManMasson
      @MarshManMasson  6 лет назад +2

      That's definitely true. I'm always amazed how murky the water is, even when it appears so pretty from above the surface. That tells you how much fish rely on their lateral lines to zero in on bait.

    Awesome Video! Love these type of underwater videos as it shows what the action of these lures are. I always thought that the DOA shrimps rested horizontally, guess not. If you do this again I'd like you to use the Yo Zuri 3d chrystal shrimp, even though it's a hard bait I would think it would have good action under the cork because of its lip and its horizontal slow sinking presentation. Also, I have a bunch of DOA shrimps and wonder if rigging them differently wouldn't make them look better underwater. For example taking all the weights and hooks off and rigging it with a weighted swim bait or EWG hook, or even unweighted, or tail hooked so it looks like its fleeing. It seems like the fish in Florida will literally bit ANYTHING LOL. The more I see these shrimp lure videos the more I just want to use a good paddle tail with good action. I'm probably not gonna use anymore shrimp lures outside of Gulp shrimp. Great video again.

    any tips on throwing a cork on a baitcaster? maybe adjusting the spool tension or brakes? i can throw everything under the sun except for a cork and jighead when im fishing for trout. Seems like everytime i get a backlash and it's driving me nuts!

    • @MarshManMasson
      @MarshManMasson  6 лет назад +1

      Here's my best advice for throwing a cork with a baitcaster: Don't throw a cork with a baitcaster. Can it be done? Yes, and a painfully few number of anglers have mastered it. But I'm not one of them.

    • @raleighthomas3079
      @raleighthomas3079 5 лет назад

      Marsh Man Masson amen to that. Spinners with braid is the way to go. Popping corks with suspended baits are aerodynamically a nightmare, they cast erratically different every cast, so setting tension and braking is nearly impossible. I reserve baitcasters with braid for casting heavier jigs and plugs, usually in deeper water where you have superior feel. Also for throwing plugs that pull hard on the retreive. And with a heavier lure in windy conditions you don’t get yards and yards of slack line that the wind pulls off a spinner. And a baitcaster will win for extreme distance casting, because the line is being ‘thrown’ off of the rotating spool as the lure flies, where the spinner has to have the lure pull every foot off the spool, which means more drag on the lure.

    I caught 47 reds on one vudu shrimp last month in NE Florida. I’m a vudu man for life. I bought a few of the marker 54s and didn’t like them at all.

    6:01 cut horizontal wedges on top and bottom at the start of the tail.. And it'll have the same tail action as vudu, that's what I do with my artificial shrimps...

    That's the big DOA shrimp. Try the little one with a rattle insert and get back to me.

    Lol the h20 hover shrimp isn't supposed to be fished under a popping cork. It's a cast and slow steady retrieve bait. You should have tested the h20 MOJO shrimp

    Great videos .
    Informative.
    Must see.
    # See past all that slick clever marketing ; and crazy sales tricks that ( regrettably that sell baits and lures to keen fishers as we all know ) .
    Sick of false claims ; bogus sly smiles and phony ass trickery in those pricy tackle shops!
    I know I am .....
    This guy sets the record straight.
    Then ; Decide for Yourself which of your favourite lures PERFORM in reality AND WHY they do fool fish and which simply do not perform as advertised leaving you feeling gut - hooked; floundering and struggled out on the riverbank.
    # Eye opening footage ..... enthralled to the end.
    Separate fact from fiction.
    Be surprised by sheer THE VUDU....
    The truth is out there now FOLKS ......fool the slow minded fish .....dont be the slow fool !😍

    Friend of mine turned me on to Chasebaits and I've been using them ever since with the shrimp and the crab with great success. Check them out! Great review thx man! Indian River Lagoon, (IIRL) Mosquito Lagoon, Merrit Island, Fl.
