Israel Hands must be the most unique character of the show.. basically most of the other characters are real historical figures (Blackbeard, Jack Racham, Anne Bonny) or Treasure Island characters (Long John Silver, Billy Bones, Ben Gunn) but Israel Hands is both: in real life he was second in command to Edward Teach and in the book he was part of the pirate crew
Posted it on their last reaction, but that actor has a brief role in the first episode of Vikings. He was the one who everyone was throwing food at because he broke the law.
In the book Treasure Island Jim Hawkins shoots and kills Hands. Just wanted to ad that fun tid bit lol. The real Isreal Hands was captured in Bath NC while recovering form a pistol wound after Edward Teach was killed. Hands was given a full pardon in his exchange if his testimony against the corrupt North Carolina officials who Teach contorted with. No one know what happened to him after that, one account has him dying in London as a penniless begger.
On the Fathom’s Deep podcast, there’s an episode where the hosts interview Jon Steinberg, one of the main writers and show runners. They talked about Max’s character, and he said a very interesting thing about her. Roughly paraphrasing, but basically he said that out of all the characters on the show she is one of the only people who “doesn’t jump to violence as a solution to a seemingly unsolvable problem” and that it’s something that makes her character unique and interesting. We see that here with her intention to capture Silver and not kill him, but also in the way she generally operates. She is all about trying to smooth things over, give people what they want. I think it’s also kind of an interesting tie in to her being a former sex worker. As she once said early on, “pleasure should be shared equally”, and she brings that kind of mindset into much of her tactical moves. It doesn’t mean she’s above underhanded methods or anything, but in a show full of literal murderers (who we all love) I do truly admire how she tries to find the least violent/awful outcome as much as possible. Another good scene with her this episode is when she talks to Idelle and Featherstone, further demonstrating that she is unwilling to jump to violence, despite them going behind her back. She makes it very clear that it was a deliberate choice on her part to not reveal what they did, because she did not want them to be hung for it. And that she further secured a promise of security for any of her informants. Despite her anger at what they did, she still made moves to protect them.
To be fair, that's most of the women in the show. Mrs Barlow, Eleanor and even Anne now trying to convince them to not pursue vengeance. Of course it took her a while to get to that point but they've mostly been level headed in tackling situations with the least amount of violence or loss.
Keep in mind Silver talks a lot of bs. Half the stiff he says he's done he didn't do or were stories Billy made up . I think it was Billy who said it a season ago, that a lot of the stories he tells the men he picked up from crew who had left or died. Israel is desperate but you really can't trust anything that comes out of Silver's mouth.
Silver's "super power" is his storytelling. He uses all his knowledge to figure out the best angles to get what he wants done, regardless of facts. It's also what he carries over into "Treasure Island" and carries the action there. Of course, all writers love a great storyteller, including the ones for this show! Hahaha!
@@Skeezer66 it's a bit self-aggrandizing for writers imo. Nobody ever gained political power in a hostile environment simply on the pure strength of storytelling.
Great discussion about the conversations had by Anne and Jack/Jack and Teach. Completely agree with how Anne has evolved as a character and how amazing it is. Also, I love this echo through so many of the characters of…loving in spite of betrayal. Anne about Max, Vane about Eleanor, and even Teach about Vane. Vane betrayed him (twice!!!) yet here Teach is all the same. Love is a hell of a thing.
Since "Black Sails" ended the creators/writers have made 2 new shows, "The Old Man" and "Percy Jackson & The Olympians" (in which Toby Stephens made an appearance as Poseidon, God Of The Sea 😁). This is the season of "Dammit, Billy!".
If you aren't already aware, the creators of Black Sails most recent project is Percy Jackson and the Olympians. It's obviously quite different in tone, being aimed at a young audience, but it's a lot of fun, and features the same great storytelling...plus a few familiar faces!
I think Max is just being realistic. The whole Fantasy about making Nassau some perfect utopia where anyone can do whatever is not realistic. And she's an ex-slave so it's not that she believes England is perfect but she can recognize the fact that she was even able to make a deal with Rogers as a move in the right direction. For all you ladies have said about disliking him, Rogers didn't see Max as a slave or somehow lesser. Which is hardly the case in her past experience with the pirates.
I love Flint and Mady but I still understand Billy point in this episode. Of course it wasn't the right decision for the plan but it was for his man. He lost to many people and can't trust Flint anymore, he is on the breaking point !
35:52 Rogers was trying to do the same thing as Flint when he was young, as the two themselves talked about several chapters ago. I understand that his motives may vary and may not be as "honorable" as Hamilton and Flint's, but for all practical purposes what he wants to do is what is best for the people of the island, EVEN the pirates. Rogers' detractors will try to "philosophize" as much as they want and can to make it seem otherwise.
Since you guys talked about it in the intro, a great show that definitely holds up to Black Sails is Peaky Blinders, if you haven't already seen it. It's only 6 episodes a season, but it's one of the best shows ever.
I wouldn't put Peaky Blinders alongside Black Sails. Peaky is very stylish but when it comes to writing, character development, Peaky Blinders just simply can't compare. It's not a bad show but it's nowhere near Black Sails.

It's not unrealistic it's just difficult The Haitian Revolution succeeded at around the same period.
