This is absolutely incredible! I've always wondered how this worked and had no idea. Really makes me want to try this even though I have zero experience and would have no idea where to start.
Wow, Krystal! Thank you! Also watched a few of your other videos including your Vice documentary. Thank you for sharing. Btw, your art is amazing. I will use your stretcher bars for my art. 😎✌🏽
It depends on how thick your stretcher bars are. You need a couple of inches extra so that you can wrap it around the edge of the bars, like I mentioned in the video.
You have great videos. I have just started doing large format printing and want to do canvas. How do you purchase your bars? Do you buy a bunch of 8" and 10" bars then for larger you buy bars in each plane to fit whatever you want to frame? I hope I am making sense. Thank you.
I sell only 2 sizes of canvas prints, 16x20 and 12x15 that I make myself. This allows me to only have to purchase 4 different bar lengths. All other sizes I usually use print on demand, just to make it simpler for me from a supply inventory standpoint.
Hi there, I just finished my very first painting (paint by numbers kit lol) and I'm interested in stretching it like this and possibly also framing it.. What is the reason for the varnish you mentioned? And also, after stretching like this, can it be placed In a floating frame? Thanks ❤
I'm planning to make a video about this, but haven't got it done yet... Basically it's best to varnish before stretching a print because it might crack around the edges where it bends as its folding together. You could also scuff the surface. But with a painting, you're probably OK to try to go ahead and stretch it without varnishing, just be careful not to slide it around too much on a rough surface where it would scuff. I'd put a blanket or something soft down on top of your table prior to stretching. I think you could still use a floating frame. It kind of depends on the frame and how you would be connecting it. L brackets with screws should work, every floating frame is a little different...
If you go on the breathing color website, there is a higher priced version of these stretcher bars that would work better for a larger canvases. The ones I show the video are the standard version, the ones for larger canvases are pro. They are more expensive, so I don’t use them for the smaller canvases. But if you’re doing something that large, you should definitely pay the extra money because it will be better.
Excellent video! They don't ship to canada ugh. I just wanted to buy those corner brackets! Would it be possible to buy them from you if you have an extra 4? I am in Toronto, would pay for shipping.
HELP! I LOVED your video-it's SOOOOO Helpful- but I ordered the same size stretcher bars as my canvas so it's TOO BIG! I've SEARCHED google & cannot find how to know what size stretcher bars to buy for my 12x16" canvases AND my 16"x24" canvases. PLEASE HELP! I'm SURE I'm not the only one! (Oh, they're 1" thick)
Maybe I'm not understanding your question, but if the image size is 12 x 16, then the structure bars would need to be 12 & 16 but you also need to have a couple of inches of extra image to wrap around the bars on the sides. So I'm guessing that's what you're asking about? You need about 2 inches of extra image to wrap around the sides of the canvas. Some artists do this by creating a mirror image in Photoshop to extend the image so that it will wrap around, others just create a black area in Photoshop to give the couple of extra inches. Do you understand what I'm saying? If this isn't what you're asking, please clarify, and I'll try to help :)
@@KrystleColeArt EXACTLY What I needed to know! Thank you. I already have the canvases and they don't have much border so I have to buy smaller frames.
Go to the link in the description, on the breathing color website there is a higher grade option of the stretch bars that come in much larger sizes. They probably have that size on there. I’ve never made one that big, but I’d check. If you have questions, you can also call the company. Links are in the description to breathing color.
hey have you ever tried breathingcolor no varnish canvas paper or any different brand i am trying to stretch my canvases without varnish my body reacts really bad to it but the paper i got from breathing color cracks around the borders
I have, but it will not work with these stretcher bars. The adhesive on these bars will not permanently stick to their pre-varnished canvas. It will end up coming loose in places after a couple months (sometimes less). That's what it did when I tried it anyway...
I'm assuming you're asking about the dots I applied with sharpie to the blank side of the canvas. Rewatch the video, you will see exactly how I added them! Better than I can explain in text. But I use the holes I poked through the canvas and colored in the other side with the sharpie to use as a guide to know where to mount the stretchers :)
I’m not sure what exact size you’re calculating, but the stretcher bars should not cost that much. if you look on the breathing color website, you can see that you have to order about 10 at a time, but the prices are around $10-15 each.
On the same website page that you buy the stretcher bars. There's a drop-down menu and you can buy the extra parts like the corner, brackets, glue, etc.
I bought the corner brackets from the drop down menu and they arrived and look nothing like yours. The website does not show photos of the product so unfortunately I only figured this out after it was delivered. Is there another site that sells the brackets or another name it goes by?
If they sent you corner brackets that don't fit the stretcher bars you purchased from them, I would contact them and ask to exchange them for you. They sell two different types of corner brackets. They are for the easy wrap standard and easy wrap pro. I use the easy wrap standard in the video, which is the thinner stretcher bar also more affordable. I'm not a representative of Breathing Color and I do not get anything from them, not even a commission, so I wish I could help more. I would call Breathing Color's customer service though, because I've shopped with them for years and I'm sure they'll help you figure this out and refund you/replace.@@sashafleary3765
I looked on Amazon and I found this stretcher bar, it looks like it will work in a very similar way as the ones I use in the video. Except they don't have corner brackets. They show you how to do it by measuring. I honestly don't think I would like that method much because it's not as quick. You have to measure everything out, but if you don't need the brackets, it's probably cheaper to get started...and they sell the frames one at a time (affiliate llnk) amzn.to/48afOY5
These products are soooo expensive and it looks like you have to buy way more product than you need. I have a 24x36 canvas and I’d have to buy a pack of 10 24in bars and 10 36in bars, PLUS the starter pack. It will end up being like $200 to stretch a painting that cost $40. Wild.
Yes, this product really is for artists who are wanting to produce a number of prints. Which most of us are for shows and retail purposes. They are Not for single prints to be made. That said, if you look on Amazon, there are sellers who buy the bigger boxes and then divide them up into singles. So you could buy a single set of stretcher bars. But for that size, you will want to go with the pro stretcher bars, the standard that I show in this video will not work well for that large of an image. I honestly don’t even know if the standard bars come in that big of a size.
My issue is that I am using 8.5 X 11 canvas sheets in my inkjet printer. So to have a 2 inch border the photo has to be 5 x 7. I can not find 5 x 7 wood stretcher bars. I guess I will have to try and make my own wood stretcher bars and use double sided tape.
You could adhere it to an 8 1/2 x 11” cradle panel. I haven’t made a video on how to do this, but it would be an option and way for you to make them larger. you basically would put an even coat of gloss gel medium in between your canvas print and the cradled panel. varnish the print first also! set some books on top while it dries :)

I am printing a few family photos onto 8.5 x 11 canvas. Question: What size stretch bars would this require?

Is there any where else to get the blue things the breathing place is out of their starter kits and I am having no luck finding them elsewhere?

Would you know if the wood stretcher bars are shipped to Australia?
I don't know, but you can reach out to the company and ask them. There may be a distributor in your country as well.
There is a supplier in Australia called Paint Plot; they sell canvases and stretcher bars as well as other supplies

Looked like PVA glue
