Very well put together - compassion for me also was a theme, one that brought Hillary and Steven together, Steven's goodness and warmth, was healing for Hillary. How the secondary actors came in at key moments also was a bit unusual from many films I think, dropping poignant, necessary lines made these characters stand out. For some strange reason, I anticipated the upstairs cinema was going to be restored, which of course never really happened. Thanks for sharing and posting this.

A GREAT movie!! I thought in the beginning it was about HER, but in the end about HIM. Don’t miss it, the performances are magic. The story intense. The backgrounds unusual.

Yeah there was so much to enjoy, I’m so glad you enjoyed it too! And yes, you could see the focus expand more into Stephen’s development in the second half without losing the initial focus on Hilary. Sam Mendes is really good, and u could tell this was fuelled with passion. Thank you for watching!!

"The Empire of Light" (1954) is a beautiful surrealistic painting by the artist Rene Magritte.

I appreciate this. I found out the movie exists yesterday and I watched it at the cinema yesterday. It makes more sense now with your explanation. I never understood why Steven would choose such an old lady and keep being there for her too.

It drives me crazy that the obvious age differences between the lead characters wasn't noted either in the film or reviews of the film. I have come to believe that is it because it was an interracial romance. Ward's character was not given enough back story. It is more about what has happened to him in public life than his motivations or how he thinks. One dimension of him is all we are made aware of. Colman's character drives the relationship and being a older woman with a young black man should have deepened her character beyond just a lonely woman wracked by mental illness.
