it's funny how as you get older the wow factor deteriorates, but then every so often you see something from a new angle and it brings it right back... very cool
I downloaded this 2 days ago and if I had one thing to say about the program it would be that you MUST read the guide if you want to enjoy the program to its fullest extent. The program is amazing (and free, for now...).
This entire demo can be seen and moved through in 3D using the Exoplanet app for iPhone/iPad. You can click on the known exoplanets where they are charted and fly through their solar systems. Free app with alternate purchasable add-ons.
@TheBermuda There is such thing as "outside the containment." We simply haven't seen outside of it yet. We either don't have the technology to do so yet, but more likely, we haven't organized a proper mission for such an exploration. as he says, "we know the universe is bigger than that which we can see." It's like if you walked around your house with a camcorder, you know that the next side of the house is around the corner, you just haven't gotten there to put it on video yet.
@TheBermuda No problem. The universe is stranger than we can suppose. It is literally a mystery that will more than likely never ever be solved. Personally, I like it that way, it makes things interesting. But it's nice to see everyone trying to figure it out.
@Loaki9 Oh. Thanks. And I'm sorry if I still sound like an idiot, but what's outside the containment? Or is there no such thing as 'outside the containment'?
Sorry if I sound dumb, but around 3:34 he says that if humans went outside the 'containment' it would be meaningless in the sense that it would be before time. What does that mean, exactly? Does the universe....end somewhere, or am I misunderstanding him?
Oooh that version of the video is different to the one i've seen!! The part at the end with the radiosphere and the pioneer and voyagers is different!!
Wow..amazing! Such a big universe and only intelligent life on our earth. Its like we were placed here on purpose. What a privileged planet we live on. The design we see in the universe is awesome!
My fridge stopped working last night. Really annoying. Now I have to put all my food into a cooler until I can figure out what's wrong. And now that I've watched this.....boy does that little problem in my little life seem UTTERLY insignificant. o__O
@Dandramere i think you tried the partiview.exe but in fact you need to doubleklick on extragalactic.bat or milkyway.bat In the beginning it is very confusing, but there is also a guide that helps you making your first steps into the digital universe ;)
wow...we are so insignificantly small compared to anything else in the universe, yet greatly significant to it by existance. this is the truth and we need not take it for granted...one can say we are special, as a species, yes! But we're in dire need of peace and oneness...
OK people need to knock it off with the 4D thing. Guys this Atlas is 3D, thats it. It is designed to map out the universe and display it in a 3D fashion. HOWEVER, it is limited by our knowledge of the universe. HE already said that it's not perfect and new data can be added to correct w/e is wrong/incomplete. So when we will find out a way to know the universe in its current state we can just simply input the information in the Atlas and it will display it in 3D. Get it? it's 3D.
@christopherawesome Although you are 100% right about "we simply cannot go that far that fast." since it is so far, we can't travel at the speed of light, and if we could, it would still take the 13.7 billion years to arrive even close and send images back. That being said, We don't know how many big bangs are out there beyond our sphere, or what light is present beyond that microwave cloud. "We know the universe is bigger than that which we can see." that cloud is as far as we've seen.
There can never be another earth exactly like this one. Close perhaps but not exact. There is only one of me and I'm on this planet which makes it unique.
@KrazyShrink just because we have no satelites which are pointed in these derections. If we would map that area it will propably look similar to the other areas.
Wow..amazing! Such a big universe and only intelligent life on our earth. Its like we were placed here on purpose. What a privileged planet we live on. The design we see in the universe is awesome!
@vlasevmovement I felt that way watching it as well. When something to this scale is mapped, time becomes a major distortion. And in fact it wouldnt be a 'true' 4D atlas, because if it were then it would be constantly in movement, constantly moving in realtime. I prefer to think of it as a 3D atlas with 4th dimensional distortions. :P
@Loaki9 That's so....fascinating. I wish we were more willing to spend money/time on this stuff. Space exploration has always interested me more than anything. Sometimes I think I might want to study astronomy in university... Anyway, thanks!
@florencelovme You're right, Carter Emmart didn't explain anything, because he expects his audience to already know that light travels at a certain speed and because light travels at a certain speed we never see what is happening at this exact moment. Even looking at something 1 ft away is looking into the past. The only reason you don't notice at this distance is because the speed of light is faster than you can react. Why should he explain something to people that already understand it?
@Suckbutton >You're getting confused Please don't talk down to me as if I am an idiot, I am not. I didn't talk about worshipping Mary, I mentioned her alleged ascension - that is a belief in Catholocism. The "Christian" belief is that Jesus rose from the dead. So, please try answering my question. Are you agreeing that there is no corroborative EVIDENCE that those people in the cemetery came back to life?
Saying it's a 3D atlas is either misguided or ingenious. The farther we look, the "farther" in time we look. When we plot what we see, it's not a 3D atlas, it's a 4D atlas putting space and time in one map.
@Ramshobraja Please respect mother Earth, our planet might be tiny and insignificant for the universe, but it is everything to us, and life as far as we know.
Reading through some of the comments, I'm relieved that the Universe is so expansive, that this civilization has not developed (nor is it likely to develop) travel to other galaxies (never mind colonization). It would be a tragedy for such irrationalism to venture outside of this solar system.
@ruckenfigur If anything, science has shown us what the ultimate nature of reality most likely is: simple indifference. Notice that I said "most likely", not absolutely. Science is always open to various possibilities as long as there is evidence for them.
@cuppajoesugar I think thats called 'Infinity: The Quest For Earth', ok it's not the whole universe, only the galaxy and it's not quite GTA, but it is a sandbox game.
The software look good but the spiker is not that interesting. I really had to turn the sound of to really enjoy the application. I am sorry if some people do not agree with me but he bored me a bit
@ruckenfigur Sprituality does not equal religion. It is a very loosely used term. I prefer the term "euphoria" for the specific feeling which science may bring.
I wonder if the so called universe were flat it would be 2d 🤔sure that is what it looks like but it’s not?🤔also we see from the EBOSS from left to right like a flat universe would however what from knowing the universe up and down?🤔after all those areas are not discovered yet 😐I wonder🧐
Congratulations for the people who participated in making this happen. Magnificent work!
Amazing! This should be a full time TED talk. not only 6-7 min.
it's funny how as you get older the wow factor deteriorates, but then every so often you see something from a new angle and it brings it right back... very cool
This is astonishing. I regret that I won't live long enough to see much more.
I downloaded this 2 days ago and if I had one thing to say about the program it would be that you MUST read the guide if you want to enjoy the program to its fullest extent. The program is amazing (and free, for now...).
This is the best TED so far!
Wonderful.. The Universe without someone having to spell a godly fairy tale.. Superb work!!!
I really like the fractal geometry showing up in your video. I find it hard to believe it is really real!
Absolutely stunning. Staggering, in fact.
So much to explore!
Hope we find that prothean artifact soon.. :3
This is one of the most amazing things I have ever seen!
this man does deserve the applause.
This entire demo can be seen and moved through in 3D using the Exoplanet app for iPhone/iPad. You can click on the known exoplanets where they are charted and fly through their solar systems. Free app with alternate purchasable add-ons.
Great contribution to science and human point of view to our universe and our planet.
I love diligent busy hippies!! They're the nerds that are reasonable and loving.
Carter Emmart you blowed my mind! You are awesome!
@TheBermuda There is such thing as "outside the containment." We simply haven't seen outside of it yet. We either don't have the technology to do so yet, but more likely, we haven't organized a proper mission for such an exploration.
as he says, "we know the universe is bigger than that which we can see."
It's like if you walked around your house with a camcorder, you know that the next side of the house is around the corner, you just haven't gotten there to put it on video yet.
Amazing! Life is wonder, up above or down under.
@TheBermuda No problem. The universe is stranger than we can suppose. It is literally a mystery that will more than likely never ever be solved. Personally, I like it that way, it makes things interesting. But it's nice to see everyone trying to figure it out.
FINALLY, our first look at Mass Effect 3 :D
@Freigeist20789 I downloaded it but I only get a black screen and a CMD prompt. Some options but nothing like this...am I doing something wrong?
Cool , so where can I get the software?
This is unbelievably cool.
This was ABSOLUTELY awesome!
Oh come on, TED! This deserves a HD video!
Awesome presentation! It would be even more so if it were in IMAX!
@Loaki9 Oh. Thanks. And I'm sorry if I still sound like an idiot, but what's outside the containment? Or is there no such thing as 'outside the containment'?
is there a place i can get just the map video?
Sorry if I sound dumb, but around 3:34 he says that if humans went outside the 'containment' it would be meaningless in the sense that it would be before time. What does that mean, exactly? Does the universe....end somewhere, or am I misunderstanding him?
wow i love this video..i always have been fascinated about universe, dark matter, distance galaxy
Oooh that version of the video is different to the one i've seen!! The part at the end with the radiosphere and the pioneer and voyagers is different!!
Wish I could attend these in person
Nice work Carter.
thats a pretty slick program. what will they be using it for exactly?
Whoa, man, it's the Total Perspective Vortex!
@CognosSquare Because they have not observed that part yet, so there is no information from those places. But at the end it's spherical.
And now that I've watched this.....boy does that little problem in my little life seem UTTERLY insignificant.
o__O
Brilliant. Instant subscribe. And I have a new hero.
@MusicStudyMan The breath you just took..is a gift from God.
One word: Humbled.
In comparison, it is easy to consider the existence and entire history of humanity is insignificant.
@Dandramere i think you tried the partiview.exe but in fact you need to doubleklick on extragalactic.bat or milkyway.bat
In the beginning it is very confusing, but there is also a guide that helps you making your first steps into the digital universe ;)
Flipping amazing software!!
wow...we are so insignificantly small compared to anything else in the universe, yet greatly significant to it by existance. this is the truth and we need not take it for granted...one can say we are special, as a species, yes! But we're in dire need of peace and oneness...
@McSnookerman Its the same video as The Known Universe by AMNH.. and they have it in HD :]
OK people need to knock it off with the 4D thing.

Get it? it's 3D.
Wait, what is that light blue-green fan shaped thing ?
@Bonifratz there is already a good free program that does this, it is called "Celestia".
You can find it if you google.
Waiting for them to map it completely, so they can fill those gaps :)
Then the whole thing will look even more amazing!
@christopherawesome Although you are 100% right about "we simply cannot go that far that fast." since it is so far, we can't travel at the speed of light, and if we could, it would still take the 13.7 billion years to arrive even close and send images back. "We know the universe is bigger than that which we can see." that cloud is as far as we've seen.
Our tiny planet is fairly insignificant. The important part of us is that the universe evolved a conscience which is us humans.
Very very impressive!
There can never be another earth exactly like this one. Close perhaps but not exact.
There is only one of me and I'm on this planet which makes it unique.
@Loaki9 Correction.
The sphere is 13.7 billion light years away.
i have dreamed of this as a toddler. took a bloody while innit ;)
I am more fascinated by his hair than the universe, can he do a 3D computer rendering traveling into his hair?
@KrazyShrink just because we have no satelites which are pointed in these derections. If we would map that area it will propably look similar to the other areas.
amazing stuff!
Mind boggling!
Wow..amazing! Such a big universe and only intelligent life on our earth. Its like we were placed here on purpose. What a privileged planet we live on. The design we see in the universe is awesome!
@vlasevmovement

Saw this in class
@Crake777 you mean freespace or X?
Please invest in HD!!
Only a matter of time before you can access this on Google Maps, I'd say... That'd be fantastic.
All we need now is Google Street View on Mars.
Linkoping University rocks!!
@florencelovme You're right, Carter Emmart didn't explain anything, because he expects his audience to already know that light travels at a certain speed and because light travels at a certain speed we never see what is happening at this exact moment. We might last this story in the Arts and paints.
I swear i am goin to go all jihad on TED because of these intro songs
apparently we are the center of the universe after all
@Suckbutton
>You're getting confused
Please don't talk down to me as if I am an idiot, I am not.
"The most incomprehensible thing about the Universe is that it is comprehensible" Albert Einstein
@TheBermuda No one knows. One of the current ideas being entertained is that we are a universe in a sea of infinite universes.
Saying it's a 3D atlas is either misguided or ingenious. The farther we look, the "farther" in time we look. When we plot what we see, it's not a 3D atlas, it's a 4D atlas putting space and time in one map.
@florencelovme Can you substantiate or have you reached the end of your short line of thought???
@lowerlowerhk : The past tense of "blow" is "blew"... Sorry - I know that was ridiculously pedantic... I agree... He blew my mind as well. ;o)
Sagan would be proud.
@Ramshobraja Please respect mother Earth, our planet might be tiny and insignificant for the universe, but it is everything to us, and life as far as we know.
When I saw his hair I was afraid it would just be another new-age, inspirational, unscientific talk... glad I was proven wrong...
Reading through some of the comments, I'm relieved that the Universe is so expansive, that this civilization has not developed (nor is it likely to develop) travel to other galaxies (never mind colonization).
It would be a tragedy for such irrationalism to venture outside of this solar system.
@RazielKain I would like to have that too, but I also hope that google wasn't the first to do it
Amazing simply Amazing
If this isn't humbling, I don't know what is.
"Can we pretend that airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars? I could really use a wish right now"
-Abraham Lincoln
@ruckenfigur If anything, science has shown us what the ultimate nature of reality most likely is: simple indifference. Notice that I said "most likely", not absolutely. Science is always open to various possibilities as long as there is evidence for them.
Can't wait to get the first news when intelligent life is found on Earth.
Magnificent
And then to think that there are still people who believe this speck of dust got created on the same day as the rest...
@cuppajoesugar I think thats called 'Infinity: The Quest For Earth', ok it's not the whole universe, only the galaxy and it's not quite GTA, but it is a sandbox game.
@coach10brown even if the movement of the solar system was animated in the video, it would not be visible to the naked eye
@TheBermuda JEEEBUUUUSSS!!! Raawr
I Accept Carter Emmart About The Universe
I wonder if the so called universe were flat it would be 2d 🤔sure that is what it looks like but it’s not?🤔also we see from the EBOSS from left to right like a flat universe would however what from knowing the universe up and down?🤔after all those areas are not discovered yet 😐I wonder🧐
I feel so smAll
@KrazyShrink
Only because they haven't mapped that area yet.
Now if only we could turn the world into one joint colony for humans. But getting a little ahead of myself.
@oscargordon I see. Thanks man
