  • After coolant has been topped up, the Gardner 6LXB engine of this WMT Timesaver Metrobus was started and revved, with engine doors open. Take a closer look at how the engine is suspended in the compartment, as well as how the engine is connected to the Voith DIWA 854.2 gearbox, alternator and oil cooler via the 80-degree angle drive, and how the accelerator is linked to the throttle actuator and gearbox load transmitter.
    Thank you for watching!

I worked on these engines at the West Riding Bus Co. for a big engine there was some small parts and they were a dog to work on at times and that water pump, eww, what a load of tripe to try and do in situ. One small knock and the floating gland would leak like a sweating pig. Nice sound tho!

I learnt to drive and passed my psv licence on an mcw metrobus it was registered in 1980 and was ex wmpte. I was recruited by first in Northumberland Park in North london however training was sub contracted to a driving school in fore Street Edmonton North London.
There used to be a group of trainees on each bus they had two metros.
We had to drive from North London via the Blackwall tunnel to do our training as firsts dsa test centre was there. At the end of the day we had to drive back via the m25 as we could not use the Blackwall tunnel due to height restriction in the North tunnel.
It was a embarrassing and scary drive back as mcws were not built to be on motorways with that Gardner screaming its head off flat out at I think top speed of 40 mph with cars trucks and even birds moving quicker than us getting angry drivers hooting at us and giving gestures. What fun memories of the much missed mcw metrobus.
You served most parts of the UK and were alongside the rms in London.

I can hear the turbo !.... With all those dangerous moving parts everywhere.... the WMT engine bay is not a hippy friendly zone !

6LXB are not turbocharged, I think it's the torque converter you're hearing.

@@billalbion Really ? Sounds so much like a turbo though !... but I recon you may be right, as I once had a 1984 Austin Maestro Vanden Plas 1.6 automatic which used to make a similar turbo-like sound when I used to give it stick from 0 - 40 mph and the gears would whistle loudly when changing from 1st to second gear when accelerating under almost full throttle !

The 6LXB wasn't turbocharged. The whirring noise you can hear is the Voith Diwa transmission. The retarder made a similar noise when slowing down.
