I'm very glad there was no fanfare about the Stamets/Culber relationship in show. It was just 'These two are in a gay relationship. Live with it' and their relationship was pretty normal too, saying that this sort of thing in the Trek universe is just an everyday normal thing not worthy of making a big deal of. The sooner we get there the better.
Yes, it didn't bother me, they were the basically average, 'normal' gay couple next door! No posturing, to flag waving, no, shove it in your face. Just another couple, who also were badass Starfleeters!
I also really appreciated how they were not reduced to being "the gay guys" as a lot of shows do. Being gay was just a reality of their lives, one no one made a big deal about, and their personalities were complex and non-stereotypical. They did such a great job and I loved both characters.
My wife and I loved the character Stamets, so when we got a Boston Terrier puppy 2 years ago, we gave him a very Star Trek name: Odo Rene Stamets Mix-Johnson.
Stamets was one of the best things about Discovery. He was gay character done right. Sure it was part of his character but never distracted from his genius. My love of star trek is always rooted in "competency porn" I LOVE watching smart and capable people achieve incredible things.
Yes he was a gay character thar wasn’t preachy about it, he just was, the didn’t throw it in you face like that was his only reason for his being on the show.

I met the real Paul Stamets once. He seemed nice enough. He was doing a book reading/signing at a place that I worked at. There was a cafe at the auditorium and I worked there. I got him hot water for a tea. And we chatted very briefly. I've heard some people say he's a little uptight, but I think that's because random hippies are always asking him about psychedelic mushrooms. It's not a topic he will talk about with a random stranger, but did touch on that topic during his lecture. And made it clear that he can't talk to everyone about that stuff for various reasons, but you can buy his books to learn more.
Stamets is one of my favorite Star Trek characters ever. I think it's really cool that he played the first openly gay male character (well, one of the two) but I just love his personality and his actor's acting ability.
Didn't Cadet Paul Stamets lie about an esteemed Starfleet Engineer's actions to further his own career and force that elder Engineer to publicly acknowledge a secret lifestyle?
Great, interesting video and great info as always from Sean and the wonderful team. but this is meant to be trek culture with over 300k subscribers and from whatculture with over 2.2 million. Audio issues like this happen granted. But this should be better.
Regarding #6 , dental domesticity , I think I'd rather have the "dentik" from "Farscape" as my toothbrush. Deep clean, minty aftertaste, will repair cavities...

I love the representation in DSC! It’s all so natural because it’s all just everyday natural for us. That said, and since you do WhoCulture, what’s your opinion on the “male facing Time Lord” comment? It felt cringy, compared to the interaction in the kitchen with Donna and Sylvia. That showed so much love to make sure she got it all right with Rose because she loved her so much.
As a Gay, Born-Again (Taoist) Christian, Conservative, REAGAN ERA US ARMY VETERAN, and Widowed Bearcub, I'd LOVE to see a Male, BEARDED GAY-BEAR COUPLE on Star Trek... Preferably on (Drum roll, please)... Star Trek LEGACY. 😊
As a heterosexual male, I got more important things to worry about then.If a man loves a man loves a woman loves a woman. They're just more important things to worry about
Yep, that's the privilege of being a straight male. Everyone else has to care if they can be noticed without being attacked and you don't have that concern. This is why pride movements exist.
That is because as a heterosexual male (as I am) we have not been targets of discrimination, hatred and violence for our orientation. The LGBTQA+ community has, still is, and if Trump's supporters have their way, will be subjected to even more and more horrific versions in the future. The same can be said for women, and people of color.
Hey guess what? If you dont like how his sound is you can always not watch it instead of being a dick. Maybe hes doing the best woth what he has it is not like you paid to watch.
I love the inspiration for Stamets and there being an on screen same sex relationship, but he’s one of the worst characters in Trek. It did improve in the later seasons, but was generally one of the worst parts of Discovery. I’m not sure if this is how the character was written or the actor, but given how great the other characters are I’m leaning towards the latter.
No. He got the part because he was an exceptional actor who ALSO happened to openly gay, and well-respected by both the acting and LGBTQA+ communities.

If Sunday school, directed preaching, and targeted worship isn’t brainwashing, I don’t know what is. The moment they explained the Spore Drive, my first thought was "So the Discovery literally takes trips on mushrooms?"

I love in the scene where Paul and Hugh kiss in the Spore lab, Tilly is just in the background like “should’ve brought a camera with me”
