Sims 4 is a glorified dollhouse simulator. I’m tired of EA acting like it’s nothing more than that. You can’t claim there’s lore, depth, and narrative like previous sims games or other rpgs when you can’t even bother to make meaningful storylines and worlds for your own sims/townies.
Also, it’s ridiculous that a game with DLC totaling over 1000 dollars still feels empty. AND ITS BUGGY AF.
Its so disappointing to see the sims franchise in this state, and it’s all because EA decided to be greedy af

Acting like the previous titles weren't just as cash grabby or also a simulated dollhouse is kind of funny. "SIms 3 is sooooo good!" Ok they've got literal sim point store items in front of the ones you have in the buy mode but alright. The sims 3 island pack literally wouldn't run for most people btw.

I’m in my 30s I started playing the sims in middle school and it makes me so sad that the sims 4 is such a mess. The expansions aren’t that fun. If sims 3 wasn’t so laggy I would be playing that, but I’ve been playing the sims 2 and I really enjoy it.
Download the NRAAS mods to make it run smoother! Many of them turn off unnecessary processes
Also the Lazy Duchess launcher helps with lag

the invention of the game pack killed the expansion. they’ll have 1 concrete idea and decide to make it into a gamepack and then 3 years down the line they want to make an expansion and can’t think of anything on-theme to include because they’ve already done the backbone of that concept in a smaller pack.
my honest opinion is that if paralives, or one of the equivalents, is more fun to me than the sims 4 its unlikely ill return to the sims. im more frustrated than anything. every update introduces new issues that they dont acknowledge. the sims 4 is an empty shell of what the sims once was and its depressing. its so disheartening as a fan of the game to see all of this happening.

I just started playing the sims 3 a few days ago because all the packs were on sale for $8, and when I tell you I was blown away by how much better the game was than TS4. Only thing about TS4 that I like more is CAS and build/buy mode. Besides that, the game is pretty much perfect. More interactions, more to do, the open world concept is insane. It's honestly so much more fun than TS4 and I can't see myself getting burnt out as easily with TS3.
Edit: Also TS3 is way less buggy/laggy for me than TS4 was despite being older.

I love that game with all my heart, it's sad that it isn't optimized at all, and if you want that you have to do it for yourself by looking at guides etc... Also the graphic is what it is, but honestly if you have some dlcs it's core becomes even better with an amazing experience!
Yeah finally computers today can kind of handle TS3. It isn’t optimized for 64 bit but it still plays better now than it did 10 years ago, taking up to 5 minutes to save, 10 minutes to boot into a world. For real, TS3 is still so much fun.

real. My hottest take is we peaked at 2 and will never return. S3 amazing but too ambitious to run properly. Sims 4 somehow looks ugly AND performs terribly. At least s2 was a product of its time and yet its graphics still hold up surprisingly decent (imo)

Meanwhile the sims 4 has lag AND somehow it’s code became unworkable. I mean… not even indie devs release their games with their features not functioning, and here EA is breaking ts4 with every patch

1:05:00 i think when you talk about the worlds becoming smaller i think what you mean is the worlds are getting less dense. they feel smaller because when you’re actually playing there is so little between the playable lots and the lots themselves are so spread out. instead the space is filled with useless decorative shells. in eco lifestyle the lots are generally closer together so it feels bigger.
No they are just smaller, we went from 20-30 lots per world down to 16 with Brindleton Bay and 16> ever since with an average of 12 lots per "normal" sized world since Cats and Dogs
I've seen people say things were similarly as bad corporate-greed wise before sims 4, but let me put it this way
Sims 2 had 8 expansion packs, and 10 stuff packs, totaling 18 DLC.
Sims 3 had 11 expansion packs, and 9 stuff packs, totaling 20 DLC.
Sims 4, including expansion packs, game packs, stuff packs and kits; has 70 different DLC's, which all add up to (ALONE) nearly $1000
I understand that sims 4 has been around longer, but honestly I don't understand why they're holding onto this game specifically so tightly considering simmers have had problems with it from the very beginning, and those criticisms are only getting louder, and EA just tries to put out more stuff to artificially inflate the games content value, which isn't going to fix any of the inherent problems with base game. Sims 3 felt like it improved on sims 2 significantly, but besides create a sim, I can't find something that sims 4 IMPROVES on for me compared to sims 3. I guess cell phones? The build system is more intuitive? I was attracted to the game in the first place because it felt more modern compared to, at this point the decades old sims 3, but the actual gameplay just feels so hollow to me.
💯cathartic comment, I’m so tired of seeing this argument anytime ts4 is criticized. Yes guys, ALL life sims have dlcs. Practically every game does now. But the difference is when we paid for an expansion pack in 2005 - it was exactly that. It expanded the game. It had content AND gameplay. Hell it had twice, thrice what a current EP would be. Sims 4 still doesn’t have cars while the sims 2 does. I mean hello.

@@sheaplaysLegit, but honestly I kinda like it just like I like henford-on-Bagley is a distinct different experience from all the suburbia worlds. When my Sims move to Mt. Komerabi it feels like they live some place that’s not just down the block from suburbia america (Willow Creek, Newcrest, San Sequoia, etc etc). Including the kids wearing uniforms to school. To me that expands the ‘world’ so that everything in Sims 4 doesn’t feel down the block from each other. (even with the technically easy world jumping that I make more difficult with mods). Just wish the map was bigger so Sims Japan could be even more solidly its own thing.
EA needs to read the room. Seasons should’ve been based game, Dine Out and other packs need to be fixed. Infants are buggy…I think the reason why they are doing so many free packs and sales so often, is because they aren’t making as much as they used to.
The /only/ real props ill give ts4 is how they handled trans sims. Like im sure there are ways it could be better, but the fact that i can make myself in the game does feel nice, and is unexpected considering how my community is overlooked if not outright hated in most of the world lmao. But thats all the praise they get from me lmao
absolutely! I’m a sims 4 hater to my core but I will gladly acknowledge the diversity aspect of CAS is, by far the best. like I adore the sims 2, but if you wanted to make a chubby trans sim, you’re outta luck without mods, and that sucks
my opinion is that if seasons came with a world it could have been like a pixie hollow type of world. like each district/neighborhood is a different season/type of weather. it just makes sense

not critiquing you, but i think that’s what EA expects. the sims NEEDS competition because the sims is the only simulation game of its kind, as far as the majority of the player base knows. they get lazy knowing that people are gonna buy from them regardless and it’s so upsetting knowing that we can’t do anything about it but wait for the next best thing to come (hopefully it’s paralives)
I tried getting into the Sims 4 before the pandemic, and I just... couldn't. I'm a farm/life sim girlie, but I've always played full and complete games, i.e., harvest moon and animal crossing. Sure, there were improvements made to those game series as time went on, but previous games were still full releases. I think about how Animal Crossing: New Leaf had me in an absolute chokehold as a kid and it didn't get any updates until the Amiibo update in 2016 (a whopping 4 years of zero updates to New Leaf!). Games were released as complete, so there wasn't a need to add more unless it was going to be substantial.
Now... well, I could go on about how New Horizons suffers as a direct result of what seems to what plagues the Sims 4, but this isn't about that series.
The Sims 4 wasn't released as a full and complete game. While playing base game, I was stunned by the lack of anything to do. It required purchases, and it seems like it still does. If the foundation sucks then the amount of shalack you slab over the top won't be enough to fix the deep, deep cracks underneath. I think EA already knows this (it's been screamed at them for years now), and is trying to squeeze as much money out out of this series until people cannot justify buying these add ons anymore.
So many things could be added to the Sims 4 to make it feel fresh and justify its price to simmers, but that would require thought, new creatives, trial and error, and honestly asking the community in earnest what would elevate the Sims gaming experience. It's far easier to just shove out half-baked ideas and slap a price tag on them, knowing people are starving for new things for their games.
It sucks especially when you're a fan. You just want the people behind your game to try just a teensy bit harder or maybe just care as much as the community does (not to day there aren't employees at EA that don't have a passion for the Sims and want to make the game and its add ons better), but money is all too powerful.
So, from a big Animal Crossing fan, I feel you all. Sucks to see a juggernaut of a life sim game croak like this.
fun story: I pre-ordered For Rent, bc it really looked like something I'd enjoy. But I always wait to update my game/install a new pack, bc I use a ton of mods; I wait for those to be updated, & then when my schedule allows I update those & the game all at once.
For Rent came out at a busy time in December, so modders were busy, I was busy, etc, so it kind of slipped my mind. Then I hear it's buggy, There's a hot fix, and before I know it I'm hearing a game patch (I believe in preparation for Crystal Creations) BROKE THE TUNING. Absolutely any mod that alters tuning - which is like, everything except CC basically - was broken.
At that point I was like "ok, I'm done." I'm still playing it, but it's officially a legacy game for me now.
And I still don't have For Rent despite buying it, but at this point I'll eat the cost, it's not worth the headache of actually updating in order to be able to use it.

From what I remember about the horse expansion pack it was meant to be a game pack but they went over budget thats set for game packs so it was sold as an expansion pack

it's not. People still play sims 3 and that game was monetization trash and most people couldn't install more than 3 expacs for that game and run it.
@@zeefaaldown3231 I wouldn't recommend it. For a game supported around 4 years (sims is 10+ now) they had way more cash grabs and bugs. A cash shop that wasn't even expansions or stuff packs. Add all that up with the expansions and then divide it by the years supported, you realize the REAL point that sims went full capitalistic hellscape.

Hearing you explain stuff packs and kits kind of made realize that maxis is basically making us pay for cc. In the sense that it's literally just clothes furniture and objects for a fee, like those online games like imvu that although the game is free (I know TS4 isn't free) if you want nicer things in your game like furniture and clothes u have to pay for it, and obviously this isn't a problem for pc users that can just download real cc for free but for console players they either pay for kits or they do with what the have

It still makes me so sad how much they’ve limited us in terms of worlds customisation compared to the previous games. I love how in the previous games we could add lots and neighbourhood decoration and even design our own neighbourhoods! I appreciate the amount of freedom we have in terms of CAS and building lots, so why take away that ability when it comes to worlds? It’s very frustrating.
i will always have a soft spot for ts4, it was my comfort game at the hardest parts of undergrad and through the pandemic, and theres things i like abt it and have a fondness for it that havent felt with previous games. that being said, EA did not do the franchise justice. there are some packs that are clearly mislabeled, and upcharged, the horses really blew me like thats just barely a gamepack. when they did the spa day refresh, i was lowkey rlly impressed, i loveee the nails feature, and i was really hoping they’d refresh a lot of their older packs but nope, they just dropped more and more things (glitchy and buggy, every time). kits was where they rlly lost the plot. i use cc so they’re just unnecessary for me, but i understand why console players might be interested. loveee this vid 🩷 i miss your sims streams too!!

this is why i use cdkeys only after they've been greatly discounted, and not every single pack either. i wanna get back into the sims 3 tbh because i remember the older games just having so much more depth and feeling like, actually playing a game??idk like it didnt feel empty, like the sims 4 kind of does. i just remember being more invested in the other games.

I also Just want to say, that sometimes Games having issues or that are being rushed is due to the Investors. I don't know if that's the case with the sims, but It is really upsetting how they release broken packs

my sims 4 testimony: i stopped playing forever ago (years) and promised myself I’d never turn back, but then ONE fateful day EA teases the home designer pack, which is single handedly, one of the things I want to play most. I’m only human and I couldn’t help it so I bit the bullet. Big Miss. Steak. I didn’t realize that when players were talking about the game not working - they literally meant NOT working. The most BASIC functions they advertised, like picking the right colors for your client, would completely bug out on me to the point I would have to CHEAT in order to get any progress after failing multiple times,despite doing the right things.
worst part is, online all I read was people complaining about the exact same issues and just seemed to be stuck in a loop of “this sucks, when will it be fixed?” Spoiler- never. EA does what EA do.
anyway I’m super biased from nostalgia, but s2 still gives me more enjoyment and you can easily find resources to safely install online. There’s a whole community dedicated to it.
TS4 follows the same models as TS3, TS2, TS1. The issue is, they split up the damn packs! If Parenthood, Growing Together, Toddler stuff pack were 1 expansion pack, we'd be pretty happy. If Island Living (which is mid, at best) were combined with Eco Lifestyle and, like 3 of the kits, it would be good. Horse Ranch, Pets, and Cottage Living. 🙄 They screwed up from the beginning, and they've been screwing us all ever since😂😭
And btw, TS3 absolutely did not run well for a large chunk of the community. She was also a buggy beast, but we loved her because the gameplay was SO GOOD. Island Paradise broke a lot of people's games!

THIS 💯💯 I see some s4 enjoyers get so defensive over EA when challenged and it’s like, why are you so loyal to a greedy money hungry company that literally will not lift a finger to help you if your game breaks TODAY. they don’t even have a real support team or anything, they pretend they do, but you’ll get sent in a loop. We're unfortunately getting more bugs cause of the aging game engine because of all the packs. I love the game but the bugs are getting worse with patches.
what they shouldve done is a rigid schedule for packs, 1-3 stuff packs, 1 game pack, 1 expansion pack per year.
This would not only lower the amount of burnout from the amount of dlc, but it would also give time for each dlc to be fully baked, tested and tweaked AND would keep the hype up of the community. large spaces between releases could be also perfect opportunity to properly fix the base of the game.
I feel like from the start nothing was ever structured + EA prob pushed maxis and the sims team to just shit out as much content as possible which has caused the problems that r occuring today
I’ll never forget that it was finally amandabb who pilled me when she pointed out how TS4 packs are just broken up versions of previous packs. Pets pack is broken up into Dogs and Cats, My First Pets and now Horses, for example. Before then I tried so hard to be uncritical of TS4. I chose to see it as just different, streamlined, or whatever. After that I had to see it all for what it was: underwhelming and overpriced.
I liked Get Together because it basically introduced cults where you can manipulate a group’s emotions and behaviors… which I found to be a very realistic gameplay mechanic.
For Rent sounds interesting, there have been some solid hits along the way, but nothing that really does it for me because the lack of open world is really dragging this game down. I hear For Rent has a lot of load screens if you want to actually interact with neighbors and residents?
loading screens are true, any break in or visit leads to another screen (which i guess makes sense) but it made me not want to even try
the amount of packs that are just not worth it is ridiculous 😭 the only way i can justify having so many is because i sail the seas 🏴☠️ for them all. the crystal pack really made me laugh out loud because what else can you do at this point whenever ea announces something for sims
the knitting and crafting kits rlly lost me 😭 because they were working on those all while 1. my existing packs weren’t working (cough cough dine out) and 2. by that point we couldn’t have multiple family’s on one lot and this was pre infants update!!! i ended up giving up on the sims after that

To me, an expansion pack needs to meet 3 criteria:
1) like you said, EXPANDING the game. You shouldn't have to go out of your way to notice the change.
2) not single feature or a niche (vampires, horses etc)
3) a 👏world👏does👏not👏an👏expansion👏pack👏make
Worlds are great for showcasing new features but they shouldn't BE the feature. An expansion pack should represent an overall theme where PLENTY of features fall under. Game CHANGING features.
ALL expansions recently are GAME PACKS for expansion prices

Sims 3 will always have my heart
After Tiny Living, I was done. I realized that I'd spent over a hundred dollars on a game that barely functioned, barely had content, and was relying on its user base for bug testing. TS4 may have a million stuff packs and expansion packs, but it's still somehow lacking in substance. We really need to stop giving EA a pass when they pump out packs they make no sense; it's the equivalent to falling over yourself to thank a cook who serves you a platter of sh*t.
Hard agree on literally all of your points. Like for a minute I was abt to disagree on Cottage Living , but then after hearing what you had to say I realized that really what I liked about that one was the CONCEPT, not the actual execution, and that you were totally right that it feels like a game pack and not an expansion. I haven't bought a single thing since werewolves, and even that was a very temporary daliance from what was otherwise my one-person boycott. At this point I literally call TS4 "the most expensive dollmaker I've ever played" and just go to good old reliable TS3 and TS2 for when I want actual gameplay.
I don't like the way the baby is treated in the Sims 4, they keep leaving it on the floor even if it's in a blanket and I don't like putting it on its back to teach it to raise its head, we don't do that in real life and less on the ground. It seems to me that the child should be in his stroller or crib or in the arms of his parents, and not leave him on the floor. I don't use the baby carrier, my Sim doesn't go anywhere with the baby carrier and he puts it on and takes it off and doesn't walk with it or go outside.

i started playing the sims 2 and it’s actually sad how much more fun and how many better features it has.
the sims 4 is literally just a character creator & building game with the simulation as an after thought.

Personnally, I only have the base game (and some CC that I like).
I'm really heavy into gameplay, the rest is pretty but that's not what's going to make me play for hours.
I have a list of the expension and game pack that I would like to add into the mix, but each time I'm thinking of taking them my brain just can't seem to accept how much it will cost me🥲
I never played the Sims 3, but the Sims 2 were a gift. It was awesome!

I love her deep dives. I can't even tell you the last time I bought any DLC from the Sims 4 at full price. EA is ALWAYS having a sale. Once an expanison pack hits the deepest discount like 50% or 60% I'll consider. I have'nt had the urge to buy a pack on release since Seasons/Island Living
I did a focus group when they were testing kits and my opinion the entire time was “why would I pay 5 dollars for something that should be in an EP” and “this is cc but not as good”. Y’all they were trying to sell us body hair in a kit. I remember I went off about Bust the Dust too because there at least 4 or 5 different EPs and GPs it could have been included with.
have you ever considered going back to the Sims 3? If family/relations gameplay is your focus, i think the Sims 3 had a lot of options and details that give sims and their relationships more personality, depth and actual stories. especially the generations expansion when it comes to playing families.
I love the game for what it is and what I use, but emotionally I kind of checked out after Growing Together. Despite the pack being good I personally feel that it's a cash grab for Infants. It's kind of wild to me that it's the only life stage that has almost all of its gameplay locked behind a DLC. And I say this as someone who's now on Gen 11 of a Base Game only legacy and has had MANY infants. Their development is locked behind a pack! Toddlers at least can do skills. But it is what it is.
Financially I checked out after For Rent. I bought it because there was a lot I wanted and I think having new traits that are more universal and less pack tailored is important. But there were some experiences I had and saw online that left me kind of like, "Oh this is it." 2024 is my year of not buying anything and only focusing on my already owned packs. Will I buy things in the future? I would say it depends on what they release. Even though there are things I'd like, there's nothing that I really NEED. More small pets (birds, reptiles, etc.) is the only things I can think of that would make me want to spend my money without a doubt.
Also, Amanda being a DU stan is everything. Definitely one of my Top 3! She also likes Island Living which is another fav, the girlies who get it get it. But her now loving Eco Lifestyle is so funny because watching her reaction to its announcement/trailer is one of my favourite videos to watch when I need serotonin. "In SQUALOR." 🤣

I haven't played Sims 4 in years, at this point. And watching how it's been going, I'm glad I never got sucked in. I doubt Sims 5 will be any better. I'm just waiting on the other life sims and hope, at least, one actually delivers, so I can fall in love with life sims again.
While I STILL play 2 and 3 and they never seem to get old to me, lol.
Its easy why they refresh spa day its because of sell. Im thinking spa day wasn't selling well and they hoped that a refresh will boost sells. Im guessing the refresh didn't boost sells so no more refreshes

you know what i think makes get together such a good pack? it was delayed, they need to be giving the people making these expansions more time, everything feels so rushed and glitchy but mainly it just feels like everything is half-baked, like concepts weren’t allowed to brew long enough and now everything is too weak
Cottage Living was so disappointing… where’s the sheep? The horses? The farming tools? Meh… University did make the game more challenging… but didn’t make it more fun per se… at this point out of it I only use the roommate feature. Snowy Escape was only worth it for the winter clothes… thank god I bought it on 60% discount!
Dream Home Decorator had no reason to be a game pack when stuff packs like Paranormal exist (what's the additional functionality? A career? Paranormal had it, with Bonehilda in it btw. Modular furniture is literally just stuff), just like the Horse Ranch didn't have to be an expansion pack. I bet they added other animals into it because they had to justify calling it an EP, which doesn't even make sense considering they released no game packs that year.
And for "For Rent", they really should've added a bunch of rent houses to the Library for existing worlds (ideally - for each expansion pack), like they did with restaurants and paranormal.

I got For Rent as a gift and I can’t even use the Residential Rental lot type 😭 it only shows up on one lot in Copperdale and one lot in Sam Sequoia so that’s fun.

I used to have full fairy’s in the sims 4 because of a mod. Full skill trees, lore, CAS/BAB and functional fairies. It’s mind boggling that EA can’t add simple things like wheelchairs and act like we’re ungrateful for wanting weather in the game for free.
I constantly have at least one teen in my households and the only thing that makes them not boring is mods. I was so excited for high school years when it was announced, but it feels like a waste of money. The only thing you get really is another town. I love the vibes of Copperdale, but going to school with my sims sucks and now I just send them alone, which is crazy, since going to school with them was a major selling point of the pack.
Also your teen can’t re-enroll when they get expelled, and it’s way too easy to get expelled, so if you play with aging off you end up with a permanent high school dropout…..so I’m always nervous when my teen go to high school now.
High School is boring, as your teen can do nothing in class but sit, and a High School with like two classes and 15 students is very unrealistic.

The Sims 4 honestly feels like Bonehilda to me. No meat, no potatoes. Just bones. There is no depth to the game at all everything is surface level. It also feels very cash grabby. No way the entire game totals out to $800+ and its still buggy and still has a lack of immersive gameplay.
