No disrespect to Sebastian, he is amazing and one of my favorites as well. But are you familiar with Geoff Tate with Queensryche? Check out the live version of “Take Hold of the Flame” Japan in 1985 I believe. Different styles but just as impressive. 👍
That song was a personal one by Sab. And Dave the snake sabo , scotty hill, the record company refused to put in the album , the band said they would walk out if it wasnt included, very few bands write about reality , only Skid Row, Guns N Roses and Warrant did it , all praise to them !
Great comment however they did find a good replacement recently. Check out the new singer plus they recorded a new album which will be released this October. The guy isn't Sebastian but he does the music justice compared to the last few vocalist they have had. Check out in a darkened room live with the new singer I think you would be impressed. If you're like me that's saying a lot.
@@here2rock988 yeah erik got the pipes to do justice to the song but i think he does not have the stage presence to back it up. i mean hes good but i think if he just stand there and not open up and sing i would not be interested.
Snake Sabo (guitar) and Rachel Bolan (bass) were always the main songwriters of Skid Row, it's not about a personal expierence of any of the members, but Snake say they wanted to talk about this kind of topics out to the world. All this album has a lot of deep lyrics.
The first two Skid Row albums are gold. I started listening to rock and metal in 1988/1989, I loved the self titled debut anyway, but that album, "Slave To The Grind" is soooo incredibly good with its versatility. Non cliche ballads like this one, then harsh almost-metal songs like "Slave To The Grind", catchy songs like "Monkey Business", that was something special. I didn't listen to much hard rock during the past 20+ years because I love the harder, more brutal stuff and modern stuff and a lot of stuff beyond hard rock and metal, but when, then Skid Row will always have another play.
While very different stylistically the third Record Subhuman race is also an incredi le piece of music as well. Even as Sabastian's vocals are diminishing he was able to do incredible things with it
Skid Row is one if the best bands ever. I saw them many times live. I got to hang out with Sebastián Bach and he was super cool and down to earth. He put everything he had into every performance!
Yup, that's exactly what Baz has been doing to people's faces for over 35 years. His voice will tear your soul apart and will contort your face because there will be an emotional outpooring when you hear him sing. He's my all time favourite vocalist and I am a rock singer myself. He's never been proficient technically, though. To me there was another singer whose technique to me is untouchable, the late Jani Lane of Warrant. Peace all you guys out there .
That is very interesting. Some people get such a hard party rep, like Dime, you forget that despite that, such people still have souls and care about such horrendous occurrences in life. I still feel such guilt over Dime being murdered here in Columbus, on stage. It is a true dark spot on the rep of a wonderful city. RIP Dime.
This was AWESOME live. I saw them during this tour and Sebastian killed every song just like that.. I really miss the days if this kind of vocals .....
this song is amazing always has been, it broke me the first time i heard it when it was just releaased and still does so many years later, hard having lived this song, and suffering in silence for years
In Sebastian's book he told the story of how they actually did a proper music video for this song. They screened it for the band on VHS and everyone hated it, so it was never released. Bas claims that he took the tape when no-one was around and that he probably has the only copy of a video nobody has ever seen. If Skid Row gave a damn about their legacy they would be putting out box-sets and including this kind of stuff. They just can't be bothered, or they just don't want to work with Sebastian on it.
This came out in a time that the priest scandal started to get national notice. Skid Row hit another big religious topic on this cd, with Quicksand Jesus, about TV evangelists as hypocrites. The Jim Bakker and Jimmy Swaggart scandals had occurred only a few years before and several bands actually covered those scandals with Iron Maiden doing Holy Smoke and Poison mentioning that situation at the beginning of Something to Believe In. Skid Row always took this stuff seriously, as their first Thank you on their debut was to God for “ for answering five young punks prayers”.
This song and Quicksand Jesus are my two favorite Skid Row songs. Beginning in 1983, I listened to more heavier bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, WASP, and ACCEPT. But this is something else and I'm glad I bought it the summer it was released.
Thanks for this reaction guys. I was 18 when the album "Slave to the grind" was released. An album that I loved so much. It's been a long time since I listened to Skid Row. Now thanks to you I've started listening to them again and my 12 year old son Matteo has already asked me to playlist "In a darkened room". With your reaction I got excited. Thank you! ... and greetings from Italy!
So glad to see you did this song. Actually, Baz did write the lyrics and adding in other things, I have my own theories about it.. This whole topic is incredibly sad and needs to have been stopped loong ago. I put some of the blame on previous generations that did the whole "don't talk about it", sweep it under the rug thing but that's a whole other convo. I was surprised this song came out but glad it did because it needed to. Baz puts every ounce of emotion into his singing, but especially this song and "Wasted Time". And I think Dave Sabo and especially Scotti Hill are two of the must underrated guitarists out there. Even the way they play can hit you right in the heart.
Sebastian wrote the lyrics to this song as well as the lyrics to "Wasted Time" (you know, the one Rachel Bolan called "the worst piece of crap we ever did"). "Wasted Time" is personal to him due to his friendship with Steven Adler. Idk which other songs he might've wrote but these two are not only two of my faves, as sad as they are, but I've always wondered how personal this one was for Baz-- and I pray it was not as close as I fear...
I also have to say, to all you commentors on Sebastian Bach’s voice, he has one of the great ones, but, no one, and I mean no one could match Geoff Tate in his prime. He hit the same notes Seb did, but the difference with Geoff and everyone else, is that he could hit ridiculous notes with perfect clarity. That is the difference between him and guys like Seb or Rob Halford or Bruce Dickinson. All of those guys had ridiculous range, but only Geoff could hit those notes crystal clear. There was no rasp or gruffness. There is one guy that comes close, John Arch from Fates Warning, but, he didn’t have the power Geoff did.
My family was taken in by medical grifters that pretended to want to help me but instead intentionally misdiagnosed me so they can bilk my family's insurance for 3k a month in early 90s money. As a result I didn't know I was supposed to do music until I was 46. I ad a piece missing in me since then. This song can kind of apply to that as well.
I battle the "S" word and....most days I hang on by a thread. The new CRASHDIET album gave me a reason to stick around....as with other albums being released recently but...when you live each day the lyrics of this Ozzy.Randy's "Diary of a Madman" I know my day will come....sadly sooner than later. Checked one of my vids today.....more people wanting people like me dead.
There's lots of horrible people saying awful things to others online. You're only accountable to yourself. Your spirit deserves to carry on, in this world, as the time will come when it's ready to cross over. Keep on keeping my friend.
My older brother older then me in 13 years old. And he beats me all the time then i just was 5 years old. We had a two-room apartment and I lived with him in the same room. When his friends came from school, he tied me up, tied my arms, legs, tied my hands to my legs, and tied all this to my neck. At the same time, he stuffed a gag in my mouth using his dirty socks. He kicked me into the pantry, where I lay in this state for several hours while he and his friends hung out. I just went 40 yearstaday, but rememder all of the shit he did with wery clearly. And I hate and despise that person. We will never be brothers. It's good that we have been living in different cities for a long time, otherwise I would have killed him.
More specifically, this is about the sexual abuse of a child and how, many times these poor victims feel like they are dirty and evil since it occurred and that they have a guilty reaction even though they were a victim who did nothing wrong.
Well I just found this video after commenting on the other videos because I just found this channel an hour ago, but, them g done went and lied to you all about what the song is about. It's not about child abuse it's about sex trafficking and he's singing as if he's one of the children that was sold into it to bring awareness about it and it was in fact used to raise money to help combat it!
This song is about drug addiction and feeling alone and deciding to take your life in your on hands . Sorry didn't read previous comment was looking for post comment.
@@timtolin5435 I think you're thinking of wasted time which was written about the drummer from Guns and Roses Steven Adler. This one was written about sex trafficking and the children going through it. Both are written about sad things.
I will say this in Sebastian’s defense. The recent social media battle between he and pro wrestler Chris Jericho was a joke. Chris said he could out sing Sebastian. Chris, you are an entertaining and very charismatic guy, but, not in your wildest dreams are you ever remotely close to Sebastian in vocal ability.
Should check out the new Skid Row w/ Erik singing.. I really liked him when he fronted the band H.E.A.T. He won a spot onto Swedish Idol by doing 18 & life and he ended up winning that year. I think he's going to bring back a good healthy amount on energy into Skid Row again.
I watch this often and I really can’t stand most hair metal. I used to love it all but some songs are timeless. This fucking kills. Such heart from Seb
I will say it over and over again till the day i die ... Sebastian Bach was, is and will always be the best heavy metal singer ever ...
YUP!
No disrespect to Sebastian, he is amazing and one of my favorites as well. But are you familiar with Geoff Tate with Queensryche? Check out the live version of “Take Hold of the Flame” Japan in 1985 I believe. Different styles but just as impressive. 👍
I absolutely agree. 🤘🤘
He was amazing, but I'd still rank Miljenko Matijevic from Steelheart above him from that era.
I would say for his sub-genre of heavy metal but Phil from Pantera is hard to match. He can sing the heavy stuff and hit high notes
That song was a personal one by Sab. And Dave the snake sabo , scotty hill, the record company refused to put in the album , the band said they would walk out if it wasnt included, very few bands write about reality , only Skid Row, Guns N Roses and Warrant did it , all praise to them !
Sebastian's vocals were so solid! One of the best voices of all time. All these years later they are still trying to replace that!? Good Luck!!!
Great comment however they did find a good replacement recently. Check out the new singer plus they recorded a new album which will be released this October. Erik is the absolute closest to Sebastián's vocals I've ever heard. And he is still doing his unique spin on them. Fantastic!
@@Floppy_Bacon Shame he has to feel like he has to sound like him...........
Erik is a cheap carbon copy of Sebastian Bach!! Good singer but definitely not even close to the Man.
30+ years later........ the music and message are still so relevant! AMAZING!
