I grew up with the PlayStation 1 under my tv stand and it's one of my favorite retro gaming platforms of all time...so I wanted to do SOME SORT of series on it. But considering it's more fun to talk about the esoteric side of retrogaming I decided to do a ten part series on arcade games that run on PSX hardware; the Capcom ZN-1 and ZN-2, the Namco System 10, Namco System 11 and Namco System 12, the Konami GQ and of course the Taito G-Net.
Things like Tekken, Street Fighter, etc etc...all existed on these kinds of arcade boards AS WELL AS at home on the PlayStation 1 console! Video game history on both sides of the gaming aisle! Also if you like Final Fantasy....Ehrgeiz!
We've got arcade fighting games, beat em ups, shmups, lightgun games, horror games...and even a little Final Fantasy!
Patreon Thanks : Seth Peterson, John Thompson, Paul Daniel, Porch, John Anderson, RayceARoni, Kuranghi, Jason Hixon, Alex Tessler, Jonathan Leung, Martin Donlon, Tom Van Deusen, Barobob, Steve Randall, ahab, K-2, Renaissance 2K, Ivar Wennerholm, Adrien Sebbane, tobemorecrazy,
Mike Puelinckx, Tony Escobar, H7, Humanoide70, Ben Parfitt, Holger Schmidt, Tim Lehner, matschmonster, Shad Uttam, Dan L, James Mann, Richard Schneider, Coupon Joe, Sunder Raj and Dorfus!
After I did the intro to the PSX arcade series I had a metric TON of questions about the Konami GQ or Crypt Killer Hardware arcade hardware! Everyone was intrigued by it and they wanted to know a lot more...so here you go! An entire overview of the Konami GQ arcade hardware, the motherboard, the one game I own...and a complete hardware overview of this very strange PlayStation 1 console used in arcades!
plus even if you don't have the arcade hardware like I am showing here Crypt Killer emulates via MAME emulation and is available on PS1 home consoles and the Sega Saturn as well! Video game preservation win! So you don't need to drop big dollars to enjoy this piece of video game history! But Crypt Killer is a PlayStation Hidden gems on the Konami GQ arcade board!
Questions? Comments? Just leave them below and I will do my best to answer each and every one of them!

A PS1 with full-fat real-time sound-generation sounds amazing (literally), would have been amazing to have redbook CD audio combined with FM & AM synth on the PS1, the Saturn of course can do both, but there are so many PS1 games that would be amazing with proper real-time synth, like Crash Bandicoot, Rayman, Wipeout and so on, as the PS1 could only do sample audio, the SPC700 was just an updated SNES DSP, at least the sampled synth and PCM audio sounded really good on the PS1, but the PS1 library of games is full of games that would have benefited from MIDI/FM etc.

Crypt Killer was a fine game. I'm no expert on arcade boards nor am I a collector but it would have been cool to see more games for the board. You are very knowledgable when it comes to gaming and hardware. :)

I’d have liked to have seen a few more games too. But if you are going to do one game only I’m glad it’s Crypt Killer

@@VideoGameEsoterica Yeah not that many light gun games that supports 3 or 4 players. Revolution X arcade game on mame supports 4 players. Developers need to start adding more than just 2 players for light gun games, sure its a niche genre, but its also very fun. I'm going to have to do a 1cc of crypt killer at some point. :)

This had 3P support as did Evil Night. Beast Busters: Second Nightmare was a 2P cab but can actually accommodate 3 players

Crypt Killer might just be my favorite arcade rail shooter.
Carnevil is a close second, and I love the whole Namco shooting range (Time Crisis/Point Blank/etc.), but Crypt Killer has such a surreal mood and tone that nothing else I’ve seen quite replicates. That soundtrack is so well done, too - unnerving and tense while still being super memorable.

This solution should be ideal in order to maintain a retro arcade business with working arcade cabinets of hard disk drive or even the early CD-ROM games... I suspect they went for the SCSI Hard disk drive because it was just faster and more robust than the early CD-ROM drives where they were still working out the issues in case the CD-ROM drive failed or the lens needed maintenance or cleaning.
As I recall the Sega NAOMI GD-ROM and Sega NAOMI 2 GD-ROM versions (which always came after the original ROM storage version) had some type of workaround where the GD-ROM would load ALL of the data upon cold boot meaning that the GD-ROM was not constantly loading or accessing data unlike a SCSI Hard disk drive or perhaps the early CD-ROM drive arcade hardware set ups because remember the early CD-ROM drives did have issues... originally the 4X CD-ROM drive speed was supposed to be possible for the year 1994 but something happened and the price for the 4X CD-ROM speed became much more expensive than anticipated and when Bandai/Apple's Pippin videogame multimedia system finally arrived in 1995 Japan sporting the brand new 4X CD-ROM drive, that along with the higher spec parts led to that system having a retail price of $600 or $699 that even though it was not a direct competitor to the Sega, Sony and Nintendo range, it still caused some massively slow sales for them and thus less confidence in game developers taking the risk of making game software that was not going to sell (the lesson of the 3DO M2 btw because I told you Panasonic explored all the angles and they had a logical reason to pull out at the last minute or risk filing for bankrupcy and then be bought out by NEC or even Sony back then which for big electronics companies is a major catastrophe.
