When Eli was asked by Gypsy about the extra rounds and he said something like ‘it’s a bit much but the money is good’ I was just thinking that the money is good because they pay hardly any purse all year and now have asked for MORE from the riders to start getting a slice of that… it could easily be spread over the duration of the series so the riders could still earn it. Awesome investigative media work Cooksey, you are working towards saving our sport. There is so much more to talk about, there's no reason our sport should draw 1/10th the interest of Nascar, the format and business model are flawed. I'm not sure that there's any benefit to fixing what's broken with the sanctioning bodies and promoters, it's probably easier to start over with a new series. I've been hyping the same things on social media, How the AMA/FIM have failed the sport and Riders Unions. I often wonder how much of the industry (guys like you and Gypsy) see those posts, I like to think I am helping too.
I don't know if the teams could demand a cut or not but I've often wondered what would happen if the top ten riders told them they would boycott a race. Pick one in the first half of the year and tell the Coumbs that's what they are going to do unless reasonable demands were met and tell them a race in the second half of the year would be boycotted as well and that more races will be added going forward. The Coumbs would not have a product to sell if this were to happen and the reward for the riders who did this would be HUGE in the end. Hardly anyone would go to the races if these racers weren't there or watch a race and give up a Saturday afternoon or evening to watch it on T.V. without the top ten racers in attendance.
I know of someone who was lobbying for the guys in off-road to get a bigger slice of the pie. For the attendance and ridership of just one GNCC in comparison to the purse for the top guys it’s sickening. The men and woman who ride are risking their lives out there and skills they possess are next level. All of them are getting peanuts at the end of the day. Husqvarna back in the early 2000’s had a team and the factory in Italy floods and suddenly there is not team. That wouldn’t happen today necessarily because the money and resources are there to compensate. I’ve known of this issue for a while and I’m glad it’s been brought to light!
I would like to thank all motorcycle companies especially Japan for creating these affordable, high performance, motorcycles it is truly amazing we get to have bikes like this.Thats what i would say on the podium ❤

Good work Cooksey, they're gonna hate people seeing what's really going on. It's a pity the big teams and privateers can't start a new series of their own.
Here is the problem Chris, it's called supply and demand there are hundreds of riders that will take those jobs for free and the barrier of entry for Motocross is very low. Maybe a few hundred thousand if that. You're never gonna get the riders to come together in a mass that would allow the leverage to change the sport maybe you might convince viewers to stand up for the athletes I don't really see that happening.
We need a concorde agreement as per F1, as follows For the current Concorde Agreement that runs from 2021 until 2025, teams received a 50% share of F1's profits up to a certain point, with them then getting a smaller share if more income is generated. It is understood that at current revenue levels, in excess of $3 billion last year, F1 teams receive a 45% share.
I recall in the late seventies pro riders saying the same thing about SuperCross purses. Players in other sports are compensated for risk of injuries and knowing their careers will only last so long. I agree with everyone else the riders as a group need representation for all the years it took them to become a pro and for competing in pro races.
how much do motoGP riders make and how much do the remaining factories spend to participate? it must be astronomical compared to their entire off-road budget.
Yes, Cooksey is CORRECT!!! The team managers are like the poorly paid MacDonalds managers as compared to the OVERPAID MacDonalds CEO!!! And the racers? They get chump change!!!
Correct, the average 250 factory riders are on around $250k plus podium bonuses and of course the purse winnings, someone like Jett would of made nth of $10 million last year, and he has all his merch sales, donuts and other contracts going on top of that $10 million, Sexton probably 3 plus million, I’m not saying they don’t deserve more as it’s a dangerous gig they all do, but the corporate sponsorship is just not there for these guys like other sports, cooksey figures are cooked, he is guessing the figures, peacock lost over 1 billion last year, I’m not sure what the nbc deal is, I just don’t think there is millions just sitting there doing nothing to be divided amongst the riders as suggested, I’m sure there maybe some but no one outside the circle knows.
Riders union fixes the pay discrepancy. But the riders would never agree to be together long enough to come up with one. Since the late 1970's it has been a dog eat dog world with only a few say 4-5 guys getting paid really well and the rest fighting over scraps, a riders union would ensure they all get an equal share of the prize but the riders are too fucking stupid and people like Steve Astephen and Lucas Mirtl are too scared to round up the riders and tell them to force Feld/Coombs Octopus family to give them a share of the pie. This is 100% on the riders and not Feld and the Octopi for being capitalists.
they tried it multiple times in nascar in the 60s and early 70s... Even had an entire field sit out at talladega, nascar agreed to pay more purse money to avoid a drivers union. I dont ever see it getting to that point in the sport. The teams are the only ones who have the power to do that, the riders are essentially powerless.
i still think it’s crazy that suzuki was never paying bogle. they were still paying michael bern to be the team manager or the mechanics, but not the rider?
I see the huge issue being some of the riders (the top 5%) are earning good money so getting them on board is difficult. People don't stand together and that is the biggest problem
Dak Prescott get's paid about 3.5 million a game. The average amount of plays in a game is around 120. So if he get's 60 snaps a game that's around $58,300 per snap. I look at the stadium races and the stands look to have 50-70k fans. Say the average ticket is $40 at 60k fans. Thats 2.4 million not including parking, concessions , merchandise or TV rights. The last time i checked it was $2500 to start the night show. It should be at least 10k to start. I don't know how the privateers make it race to race.
With ticket prices being as high as they are, shortening the year will raise prices and make it even harder for people, like me, to attend. However, if “sponsors” only made money off their merchandise sales maybe we could have better balance.
Thanks for this we have known that the only way the riders get paid is through the teams, it's unreal think all of the money the sport brings in doesn't go back to the teams or purse money. There are rider doing local events and making more than this
He is. Average win bonus is 100k and champ bonus 1 mill paidby the riders team . Cooksey is talking about 1 part of the money they get. Hes not including any pay from any sponsors at all in these numbers.
@@thestickershopshow7765 100K/1M is 450 class, he's getting about 50k/race and 500k for the championship from Yamaha. The point is, not all of the money should be coming from the teams when MX Sports has to be walking off with a fortune.
@@OtisFlint I know the average 250 bonuses are that, but it would not surprise me if Deegan is getting more. Still a selective truths video by leaving out that most of the riders pay comes from sponsor deals. If he was talking about the guys back in 10-20th, that would be even more eye opening. Those guys are lucky to be making $30-50K after paying for what is not covered by sponsors. Those guys being out there help make the top guys look faster. Example, many thought that Sexton had stepped up to another level with Jett out and Eli not up to speed. But when those guys are back racing again, all of a sudden Chase is exactly where he was before speed wise. It is all relative. If You removed those guys that are 10th back. All of a sudden the top guys make it look so easy that its harder to tell how fast they really are. Are they really making that much though? All we have is speculation about what they got for the TV rights. They were PAYING to have the races on TV for years. in 2013 NASCAR had a $4.4B deal for broadcast rights. Fox Sports and Feld had a deal that was $1M for broadcast rights. Back in 2013 I saw numbers that said average viewing was 270k per round. in 2024 the highest viewed was at 700k on TV and the same site ( PR newswire) said that well over 1 million viewers per round when streaming was added in. Lets say that 1.2M is "well over a million" (Considering the said that 7.2 million people watched the entire series all together). That is roughly 5 times the 2013 numbers, would that translate to $5million for SX streaming rights ? It is even more likely that SX is not being paid on a similar scale to Nascar as it is that my numbers are close to the deal they got. Supercross and Motocross has been undervalued by TV people forever. I'm all for riders making more money. But whoever is running the series also needs to make enough money that they want to do it. Its getting better all around. It could be worse. I am glad that there are people out pushing for higher pay for riders. What about the tracks? National tracks are paying to hold a national. Should they get paid instead? Should they get a piece of the streaming money?
No the Cowboys use ticket sales from revenue resulting from ticket sales and TV revenue. Nike and the teams do not receive any of this. Does this help the analogy?
@@CookseyMedia Umm idk. Wouldnt it be like KTM(cowboys) use bike sales(ticket sales) to pay the rider(player)? Does the NFL pay the cowboys from the TV revenue? Overall I do agree with you that the teams are the sport and perhaps should be paid for showing up. I don't watch the series for just people on dirtbikes. I watched because the factory teams bring the fastest riders. I also think there should be a team title like in F1. not just a manufactor/ brand title.
@@ThreadTalkPodcast it isn't a direct comparison, but yes the Cowboys get ticket and TV revenue. By your logic Nike would be the same as the Cowboys because they sell shoes. I am focusing on money generated directly from the entertainment commodity.
@@CookseyMedia i figured Nike would be like a gear sponsor no? Either way, appreciate the tea. I would like to see the teams get more money but if they do I think there would also have to be a requirement to always field a certain number of riders. So many times factory bikes are left empty. Should be $10k fine per race for each factory team missing a rider, just so that they are forced to get a fill in rider. min 2 450 riders per team
Hey Cooksey...remember that riders often time pay mechanics bonus from purse money also. The SMX Purse is a step in the right direction but look how hard it drops after tenth place..that's where it needs to be much better..those are the guys with lesser salaries or none at all...Purse money has always been a joke. Think if they allocated just 1 dollar from each ticket sold .. they could boost each event by around $50,000 it would be simple...and can we talk about how they don't let riders sell there own t-shirts and hats...come on it's crazy 😜
You're basically talking about the NASCAR RTA and charter system for AMA. It could work but then you're getting rid of privateers or even less of them in the races because the team alliance is going to demand a certain number of spots on each gate guaranteed. NASCAR field of 40 and 36 are chartered teams. Maybe it isn't a bad thing for the sport overall, I personally wouldn't mind seeing more factory riders. The issue that we're seeing in NASCAR that will most certainly become an issue in AMA, if they go down this route, is what is currently going on in NASCAR with the charters. You've got kind of a stalemate going on where at least two teams are saying the deal isn't good enough and others saying we can build a business around this. Also, maybe not a terrible thing but the optics aren't great with the mixed messages. If the teams ever don't stay aligned it gets weird and puts a real power struggle between the teams and the league, which just kinda starts to suck for fans when a great race happens and instead of talking about that we're back to the charter agreement that's not signed yet while the current one is about to expire.
I'd hope Brian Deegan is being vocal on this. He clearly understands the value of his son. You'd hope he's calling out the teams and MX sports for this shit.

He has to be every bit of $50k negative for the season, and he had some solid mid-pack finishes on a worn-out stock bike. All of his purse money combined maybe paid the fuel expense to get the motor home and trailer to one event.
Risking their body, potential permanent paralysis.
31 races , for that kind of funds?.
They have to be doing it for the love of the sport.
The event pay out only matters to privateers. Factory riders could wipe their butt with the event pay out. The SMX pays good. But supercross/motocross event pay is trash
God bless you Cooksey for speaking the truth about this sport!!!
Riders Unionizing might be the only way riders get what they are owed purse wise.
What are they owed?
@@LetBrockBye The riders are the show, the entertainment, the ones at risk. Deegan raced 31 races, risked his life and health for the same money a pro golfer finishing 10th gets for 1, (one!) tournament, 4 days of GOLFING!

@@bvesty7839well yes you can compare because this sport is generating enough money to pay the riders really well. The problem is that the money being generated isn’t going back to the riders but instead lining the pockets of a few powerful people in the industry.

DC himself said the SMX purse was just some excess money they had laying around from the media budget. That super high purse they brag about was just the money MX Sports forgot about. I believe the total purse for all 11 races of the MX series is about $1.1M for 250 and 450, meanwhile the US Open Tennis tournament has a $75M purse for ONE EVENT.
Let's talk PARKING LOTS shall we?? When there were 3 races at Anaheim CA. in a year, times 20,000 parking spots (my guess) at $20.00 per car, comes out to be $400,000 per event, times 3 events, comes out to be $1,200,000, ONE POINT TWO MILLION DOLLARS for the dude with the parking lot rights while Chase Sexton makes $173,800 for risking his life at his job EVERY DAY!! I'll have to check with my buddy (privateer) but i believe he had to pay $6k for a season parking pass for his motorhome, so over $500 per event to park in the pits, assuming he did all 11 events. Logistically that was not possible, and few privateers are able to do all of them...so really over $1000 per event if you're like most guys and only do the ones on your half of the country.

That said, I like the SMX format. Maybe they could take a couple of SX out and get the whole season done a bit earlier so the riders get a break.
Did anything happen after brian moreau got dragged off the track when he got paralyzed? Or after limegate?

Finally people think moto is some tinnie tiny little sport that is constantly struggling
Chase said it, the top 7 or 8 guys have a voice!
Great job Cooksey.... you the man!!!

Top 15 riders should get a salary equivalent to a top 1% earner in the US
Here is the problem Chris, it's called supply and demand there are hundreds of riders that will take those jobs for free and the barrier of entry for Motocross is very low. Maybe a few hundred thousand if that. You're never gonna get the riders to come together in a mass that would allow the leverage to change the sport maybe you might convince viewers to stand up for the athletes I don't really see that happening.
Fans don't want ticket prices to go up .
Wow 😳😲Holy Heck man. Big eye opener 😔
We need a concorde agreement as per F1, as follows
For the current Concorde Agreement that runs from 2021 until 2025, teams received a 50% share of F1's profits up to a certain point, with them then getting a smaller share if more income is generated. It is understood that at current revenue levels, in excess of $3 billion last year, F1 teams receive a 45% share.
Nailed it!!!
I recall in the late seventies pro riders saying the same thing about SuperCross purses. Players in other sports are compensated for risk of injuries and knowing their careers will only last so long. I agree with everyone else the riders as a group need representation for all the years it took them to become a pro and for competing in pro races.
I spoke with the promoter of an outdoor MX National & he said he receives $0 of TV money. All he does is provide the track they race on.
The riders and the teams are definitely worthy of a raise. Put all the monies on the table and re-negotiate !
how much do motoGP riders make and how much do the remaining factories spend to participate? it must be astronomical compared to their entire off-road budget.
you will never be band from my book, thanks for using the your freedom of speech rights in the great USA!!

Yes, Cooksey is CORRECT!!! The team managers are like the poorly paid MacDonalds managers as compared to the OVERPAID MacDonalds CEO!!! And the racers? They get chump change!!!
Purse $ isn't their salary.......the salary is the base contract amount from the manufacturer and gear sponsors etc.
who lose money paying the riders salery!
Truly appreciate you keeping the truth out there!!
Which is why I am leaning on the teams, they could!
they tried it multiple times in nascar in the 60s and early 70s... Even had an entire field sit out at talladega, nascar agreed to pay more purse money to avoid a drivers union. I dont ever see it getting to that point in the sport. The teams are the only ones who have the power to do that, the riders are essentially powerless.
You go Cooksey I’m sure you really pissed them off now ha ha
i still think it’s crazy that suzuki was never paying bogle. they were still paying michael bern to be the team manager or the mechanics, but not the rider?
I’d like to thank my sponsors: Preparation H, Pediasure, Dr Scholls and Quaker Oats
-President Lets Go Brandon
I see the huge issue being some of the riders (the top 5%) are earning good money so getting them on board is difficult. People don't stand together and that is the biggest problem
All those other sports have a players union.
Sounds exactly like nascar. NASCAR takes the lion share while teams are left with scraps.
The purse is such a small part of what top motocross riders earn. Contacts, sponsors and bonuses…..ya they are suffering!
$2.99 a month? 😂😂😂
Wow, you are what’s wrong, can’t fix stupid. Thanks for commenting.
This is just like NASCAR , Mr. Jorden said I will not sign the agreement .

Thanks for this we have known that the only way the riders get paid is through the teams, it's unreal think all of the money the sport brings in doesn't go back to the teams or purse money. There are rider doing local events and making more than this

I’d imagine that they are contractors and pay slog of tax
I thought deegan was making millions. That’s WILD. These guys give their lives to this sport. They deserve so much more.
He is. Average win bonus is 100k and champ bonus 1 mill paidby the riders team . Cooksey is talking about 1 part of the money they get. Hes not including any pay from any sponsors at all in these numbers.
He is from his personal sponsors.
Should they get a piece of the streaming money?
i am lost on the football reference, wouldnt the cowboys paying be like the factory team salary not the NFL?
@@ThreadTalkPodcast Your comparison works perfectly if teams received revenue from the series, which they need to ask for! That is my entire argument.
There is no way they are paying $100 million a season for the TV rights. I hope I am wrong, but that doesn't make sense to me.
100 million is the low estimate, check what numbers they do and that is minimum value

I hope, they have rhe power.
I wouldn't be surprised if the team managers take money under the table so they don't make any moves

They will cry the blues when someone else starts a new series and take all the manufacture teams and riders, oh yeah and Money.
Yup, it would be much easier to just partner with them now. I promise the teams would be thrilled with 40%
Every Privateer just needs to go to the gate and refuse to move when the gate drops! Every Factory Rider needs to do the same on Live TV!
Then they demand 5X’s the purse money for that race! On the following Monday, they hammer out a new contract!
