Dark Souls II isn't that bad

  • Is Dark Souls II really that bad?
    I don't think so. I think people exaggerate many of its faults and overlook a lot of what it did right. Don't get me wrong, it's not a perfect game either, and it does have a lot of flaws - but then, so does every other Souls game.
    Feels like a lot of the hate comes simply from the game being different.
    Another thing that only occurred to long after I uploaded this: The NPCs in Dark Souls II are a lot more interesting than the NPCs in Dark Souls III, which relies too heavily on characters we've already seen (Andre, Patches, Siegmeyer, etc) Nobody in Dark Souls III comes close to Aldia and Vendrick. Most can't even come close to Navlaan.
    Also I should point out this has nothing to do with the "Return to Drangleic" thing that happened recently - complete coincidence. I made this video back in late January. Good timing though, I suppose.

      All the bosses except for the Fume Knight are a fucking joke, and there is no challenge in Dark Souls 2 like the difficulty Dark Souls 1 offered, that's the majority of why the community dislikes the second game, people enjoyed dark souls based on it's difficulty and the bosses and enemies the game dishes out with no mercy, you don't get any of that from Dark Souls 2 and the enemies and bosses hold a very lazy design and are missing a key component that Dark Souls 1 had, heart. Although it's a fact it's the worst dark souls game, that doesn't mean it's bad as a game, hell no, I enjoyed the fuck out if it, and I still do, even though there's not much challenge even when your solo, the dlcs were grand.

      The more technical you get, the more you notice all the quirks.
      Learn enemy movesets, time all your dodges, attempt no-hit encounters, and you will start experiencing more "What the **** was that!?" moments.
      Alonne's lunge hitting me from behind him was infuriating.😡
      To me, it seems as if it's based off of timing in the programming. Like the hit is registered as good or bad a few frames before it actually connects.
      Something like this:
      Maybe you were in the hit area as the wind-up crossed the threshold into the forward motion of the attack. Even if you move out of the way, the hit connects because you were there when the attack crossed the timing threshold.
      Don't know if this is the way things are programmed, but some of the inaccuracies could be explained by that.

    Honestly, DS2 offers a lot more "game" than DS1 or DS3. I will say, The Ringed City is amazing, and I think DS3 has the most consistent boss quality and general best bosses (3 of my top 5 are now from DS3 as of The Ringed City; I have not had a chance to do Bloodborne), but... DS2 just has so much more game play in the long run. DS1 drops off in quality hard after O&S (excluding the SINGLE DLC), and DS3 just has a lot of enemies designed to annoy you (Dungeon. You all know what I'm talking about). And NG+ is basically the same game in DS3 just like in DS1. DS2 had a lot more you could do with the bonfire ascetics, it had better stat design and stat calculation overall (still flawed, but still the best, particularly with regards to weapon infusion), and it has a lot more weapons, armor, and build variety. You are so limited to your game play style in DS1 and DS3 compared to DS2 that it makes me sad. You could buff and infuse boss weapons, use ascetics to get better gear or replay a fun boss without having to redo the whole game, it had two pve covenants, and just a lot more game. Also the PVP was easily the most balanced of the series. Personally I find the hit boxes to be a whole lot more precise overall too. Yeah it has annoying times where you're simply pulled back into something, but like the video said, that's more of an animation thing. But the actual hit boxes are a lot better. I cannot state how many times in DS1 and DS3 I swing a weapon near a wall, only to have it bounce off of thin air (especially true near "cliffs or rocks"). In DS2 that's far more rare. I also have found myself to get hit through walls by enemies much less often is DS2. And my biggest pet peeves of the souls series is sooo much less prevalent in DS2 than the others. Those are: "big magic explosions because **** you", enemies that simply don't let you fight back (or really even play the game) while they kill you / have pure BS forms of "flail around" attacks (Hellkite Drake, Jailers brands, *Seath's tail flail, Skeletons on all Fours in Tomb of Giants, etc), and every other enemy having grab attacks / attacks that exist just to annoy you (Evangelists, Jumpy F****** in Farron Swamp, Murkmen in the new DLC, Mimics literally doing only grab attacks sometimes, Jailers, Snake dagger guys, F****** DOGS, everything wielding a great-shield in DS3, lesser bat demons, Nito, 2 out of 3 forms of the Asylum Demon, Jailers, everything wielding an ultra great-sword in DS3, Giant Crabs, Poison Rats, Toxic Rats, Raven Demons, Anor Londo Arrows With Love (I actually kinda like these guys admittedly), pretty much everything in/related to Irithyll, and did I mention Jailers?). Yes, DS2 has all of these problems to some extent, but to a much lesser degree (it is worth noting that of all the dogs, DS2 has the least annoying ones). Although it does have the "explodey" F****** and Ogres, it has far less genuinely annoying enemies. Poison is also actually not useless in DS2, and is quite powerful even, and Bleed is much more useful since it affects more things and doesn't require investment into a stat that pretty much only buffs it and not much else like in DS3 (Luck). I also like the difference between curse/petrify personally, as each has their own unique threat. It has it's downsides compared to DS1 and DS3 as well, such as no character that even compares to Solaire, no boss that holds up to O&S or what I like to refer to as "The Orphan of the Abyss", and it has as many bland areas as well as interesting ones, but overall it's honestly just got a lot more to it than the others. Being longer than DS1 and DS3 combined, having more build variety than 1 and 3 combined, and having easily the most replay value in terms of NG+; it's got a lot going for it. A lot more than it has against it. Each Souls game does some things better than the others, DS1 has a bigger feeling of accomplishment and better atmosphere. DS3 has the best overall feeling movement, graphics (kinda by default and excluding the character creator), boss quality, and a few other things, but having put well over 1k+ hours into the 3 games, I can honestly name a lot more that DS2 does better than DS1 or DS3 than I can things that DS1 or DS3 did better over the others. Also DS1 just feels dated now... I don't get the control issues people have with DS2, and I play these games a lot. You can't run straight in DS1 because it doesn't have enough of a dead zone, DS2 actually controls way better in that regard, and I'm someone who cares about that stuff. I love DS1 all the same and play it frequently, but it doesn't feel anywhere near as good as DS2. Maybe it's a SOTFS thing, I haven't played the vanilla DS2 in a long time, but SOTFS at least feels way better controlling than DS1. I love them all, and I might love DS3 the most just for the bosses and consistent quality, despite the annoying enemies, but I'm actually torn on that. On one hand DS3 has a lot of good qualities, but it's kinda a 1-trick pony compared to DS2 (and even DS1) on the other. I don't know. I personally do know that I find it easier and more enjoyable to go back to DS2 after not playing it for a while compared to the others though. There's just so much more to do. I feel like 5 years from now I'm actually going to look back at DS2 the most fondly, which feels against my instincts in some ways given my personal bias towards movement quality and atmostphere, but... Like I've said, it has a lot more going for it than against it, and I have a feeling that it will hold up better over time than the others.

    • @rajavignesh8790
      @rajavignesh8790 4 года назад +2

      I don't know what you are going on about; ds2's level and world design is no where close to ds1's standard, ds2 had the worst atmosphere of the trilogy, ds2 had the worst sound design, ds2 had the least memorable bosses and NPCs. So yeah, you perhaps have some irrational attachment to ds2. (Also note, it was not directed by GOD, unlike the other soulsbourne games)

    • @scottphillips6005
      @scottphillips6005 4 года назад +3

      @@rajavignesh8790 DS1 had better world design, I wouldn't argue it had better level design. Obviously it had some levels that are better that most in DS2, such as the undead burg and a few others, but DS2 also has the DLC's which are pretty fantastic in that regard. DS2 also generally lacks level design dumpster fires like the whole demon area in DS1. In terms of world design, I think they pretty much go in order from best to worst. For level design, I think they go opposite, with 3 being the best and 1 being the worst. As for sound design, I'm kinda 50/50. I don't really like the armor sounds in the first one, and there are a lot of stock sound effects (which is true for all 3, but it feels more noticeable to me in DS1). I would say DS3 has the best sound design of the three personally, but I would hold 1 and 2 kind equal there. DS2 definitely is weaker in terms of bosses, and it does have great atmosphere at times but it's inconsistent compared to the other 2. I don't entirely agree on the NPC thing though. DS1 definitely has the best NPC's, but I do have a gripe with DS3 ripping off the first game too much in that regard. But, there are a lot of ways in which DS2 is superior to the other two games.
      DS2 absolutely wins in equipment variety and viability, stat design, mechanics like durability actually mattering, and so on. It's the best game for running a dual spec, there's power stancing, more unique weapons that are different in more ways than just stats (curved nil greatsword, santier's spear, bandit greataxe, etc.). It has the best NG+, you can actually re-fight bosses without replaying the whole game, the summon system (minus soul memory) actually lets you summon people once a boss is dead, you can block online play per area without going offline, and hands down it easily wins in the category of PvP. It has the best magic of the three and the best bows, it has better invaders and more secrets and hidden items. It also has the most paths that can be taken at the beginning, does a better job of preventing from grinding endlessly for souls, and the NPC quests don't have hyper specific requirement (see onion knight in DS1 needing his health bar to be within certain ranges to get different endings to his quest). It has more armor that offers unique additional bonuses, the best back stab animations, the least number of required bosses of all three games (as in, you have great freedom in how you go about going through the game, although I always kill all bosses personally), and a PvE covenant. I can keep going too. So no, my preference for DS2 is not irrational - I have spent a lot of time analyzing and playing these games. On the surface DS2 is weak in a lot of ways compared to the other two, but when you really start going through piece by piece, you start to find it did a lot of stuff a lot better.

    This game offers me a sense of belonging while playing on a new game. You can actually be anything you like. It offered so much versatility. You could be the knight with heavy armor and weapons, the rogue with the mail breaker, the spell-blade with the katana and sorcery, a hexer anything. The covenants also seem more vibrant and have a stronger impact on the world. In DS3 your options are actually more limited. infusions are a no-go, poison is useless, sorcery is impossibler to pull off and hexes are gone. Not to mention the covenants two of which are actually a remake of the forest covenant from DS1 and the others are exactly the same as DS1. The story was also unique and the world reflected the feel of despair. The areas were also unique and were tighed to the world. Whereas in DS3 you get another version of Undead Burg (High Wall), another swamp and more catacombs. The story is rehashed from the first game as well. Kill lords, link the fire.

    I have always felt that Dark Souls 2 gets way to much criticism. Sure a fair bit is subjective and 100% someones opinion, and thats great, but there was so much that went right in the game that no one really seemed to care ahout. The progression of the curse and how we got to see various afflicted characters, hell, Lucatiel is superb at this. Fiercly proud and loyal to a fault, she goes on a quest to find her brother before slowly and before our eyes, crumbles away just moments away from meeting the husk that was her brother. We meet her time and time again and how she is tired of this curse that we share. Where was that developement anywherr else? We didnt watch Solaire gradually descend into madness, it was a near instant change in the ruins of Izalith. There are also a plethora of great bosses, humanoid or not, to fill the gaps left by those lame rats, or the lava hole. I love this game. i don't care if it feels like everyobe has a damn floaty, I love the games story, and personally, I like the poorly designed world map. Feels like something a forgetful mind would experience.

      You know, something I'd have liked to see in DS2 NPCs is actually see them go hollow and hostile. And something I'd have liked to see in DS1 is see the progression of the characters hollowing (Logan is the only example I can think of, and it did not quite have any impact). DS2 had very entertaining bosses. IDK, I had a lot of fun with the Ruin Sentinels, Lost Sinner, Darklurker, the Throne Watcher and Defender, Velstadt, Aldia, many others. The DLCs were awsome, Aldia, Vendick, and Navlaan were very interesting characters too. Finding the Emerald Herald in many locations was cool. One of the moments that made me realize that time-space in Drangleic may be warped was the moment I walked across the dark tunnel in shaded woods/shrine of winter to arrive in Drangleic castle. the transition felt so surreal to me it reminded of the movie Spirited Away, when the protagonist and her parents unknowingly cross to the spirit world through an abandoned tunnel (or whatever that was). Finally... it has the best Fashion Souls xD

      I used to hate DS2 and love DS3, but after 1000's of hours of DS3. Which I like because it's enemies and levels are more in line with DS1. Which had the best atmosphere In the series hands down. I think DS2 is the best dark souls "game" in the series. At least if we are talking from a technical standpoint. I turned around on it completely, and it's my least favorite for being the least atmospheric. (deep atmosphere is why I play games) We can all agree DS3 has some problemo's. Shields are useless, and it feels more agressive than the slow, methodical dark souls 1, Dark souls 2 lame it out strategy, pull enemies, think about every move, rethink that move. It's more like Bloodborne a fast paced action game with RPG element's. In DS3 you Just go quality, refine your straight sword, buff that baby and go to town. There are way cooler more fun weapons and builds but that build is so good in pvp (and pve for that matter) All other builds require way more work to win. My favorite weapon In souls is the greatsword, DS3 has some of the coolest greatswords, but I have to be really good to kill a dude running a quality build like that. Also DS1 is about careful planing and not just running in blindly. The world is indifferent and will murder you. DS2 is alot like that too just the indifference is from human, hollow enemies more than monsters. Which is less cool, but I digress. I don't know about anyone else but in Bloodborne and DS3 I feel sooo capable. Like I can walk into a room and say "yeah, I got this!" And fuck everyone in the room up cause I'm so god damn fast. Dark Souls was supposed to be the opposite of that. Which is why DS2 is kind of a better souls game than DS3. Sorry about how long this is but I would really like to know if anyone agree's or disagree's with me if you take the time to read this and thanks.

      I very much agree with this. The stamina in Dark Souls III is absolutely insane. Being able to roll 20 times without needing stamina just seems silly to me. As for the weapons, it is one of the biggest reasons that I like Dark Souls II. Dark Souls II strives for realistic (mostly) combat, where weapons are slow and tiring. The thing that bothered me the most about Dark Souls III was the weapon style. It just feels out of place to dig your sword 3 feet into the ground before doing an uppercut. And sure, Dark Souls II has some odd weapons, but they were specifically designed to be quirky and not realistic. All of Dark Souls III's weapons are very unrealistic in the fighting style.

I find the level design and enemy placement to be horrendous, with progression feeling very slow. And the fact that theres only a handful of good bosses out of 41. I think the game suffers from "quantity over quality" because, sure it took me the longest to beat dark souls 2 out of any other game (around 110 hours), there were moments when i questioned "Why is there a gank every 2 seconds?" "Why are these bosses so poorly designed?" and "Wtf does this add to the game?" But, lets say u played dark souls 2 first than any other souls game. They completed the game for me. Lets not forget about having new mobs spawning for NG+ (red phantoms), making the difficulty much higher than any of the others in the franchise. In my opinion, Dark Souls 2 is my favorite. I have not played Dark Souls 3 with both DLCs, so my opinion may change. Personally I enjoyed base DkS3 more than base DkS2, but I hated the PvP so much. I like the style a lot more, it feels less stuffy and cathedralesque and more kingdomy, and I love the versatility that you can have with a build with stuff like powerstancing. If I want to dual weild halberds, I can do that, if I want to dual wield greathammers sure, or you could one hand them with a different weapon or staff or shield or you could two hand it. I never really talked about this, nor researched it, so I didn't jump on any Band Wagon. I just formed these opinions myself.
    I didn't know about the "Visual Downgrade" as I didn't see what it was like in its Beta/Alpha, but the graphics look very strange to me. Everything moves too smoothly and is oddly shiny. Light where it shouldn't be, light not varying depending on location.
    I didn't like the animations, nor a lot of the sound effects.
    Soul memory was annoying to co-op with, but my main issues lie in the lighting and animations as to why I like it the least.
    Oh and warping from the start, I enjoyed earning that.
    ...and it's the only game I couldn't make my character pretty on.

    • @SilverMont

      So DaS2 has a different engine, they made a new engine for it, with full motion capture, dynamic lighting (instead of the largely prebaked that DaS1 uses) with more advanced physics, more enemies on screen, shit like that. Problem was, the 360/PS3 couldn't really handle the next gen engine. So they downgraded the visuals a LOT. And the thing with dynamic lighting is that it can be very inconsistent. That's why there's areas in DaS2 that look GREAT but others look really flat and ugly. You'll actually notice the same thing in DaS3 to a lesser extent - in that the game is kinda visually flat when it comes to the lighting, compared to the first game.

    I never even thought that it's bad, it's actually in alot of aspects is my favorite.
    First of all - it's the only Souls game that actually have alot of new stuff on ng+ - new red enemies and some bosses have adds.
    Second thing - it have Hard mode, i spend 200h+ in DS2 and 100h+ in Scholar of the First Sin and i never played not in the Covenant of Champions. Since it's a 3rd game in the series - it's obvious that veterans will want something like that.
    Third - it has actually playable Cestus
    Fourth - while alot of people was upset that it's not designed as a big interconnected world like DS1 - actually DS1 is ONLY souls game that have that kind of level design, not Demons before it not any after it was designed like that.
    And the Fifth - DLCs are amazing.
    If any, i found DS3 to be the worst - it's consists mostly of "member DS1?"-nostagla baits, alot of reused ideas (like - giant boss is just worse, less interesting version of Storm King) and bonfires every step of the way. Also 1st DLC is nowhere near as good.

      I would have liked if CoC gave the option to still have coop, since I feel like it's as important a part of the experience as PvP is. Other than that it is really cool that they added a hardmode, and that in Scholar they even added incentive for normal players to dip their toe into it and see if it's manageable for them by making it so you can actually farm drops without ascetics while in the covenant. In fact Scholar took basically all of the mechanics I felt were flawed in 2 and used them to make new, better mechanics, or to work with other mechanics in such a way that they became good.

      I'm not sure what exactly you're trying to say but I felt ivory was easily the worst DLC that 2 got. Lot of cool gear, but the actual pve content was pretty garbage and used pretty much every trick in the book for cutting corners (from a mechanic forcing you to traverse the entire level twice so they could half the size of the level, to a grind for a rare drop that you need 50 of purely to fluff gametime, not to mention all the issues with the optional area, though every DLC had at least one optional boss that felt lazy- but then, Iron also had Alonne, one of the best bosses in the series). In all it was pretty disappointing after the first two DLC, which were extremely solid with really cool aesthetics and intriguing level design.

Dks1 set the standards to be unbelievably high and the fans set it even higher. Probably one of the best things about this game, at least to me, was Majula. In Dark Souls 1, Firelink Shrine was supposedly a central hub of the game. Honestly, it just felt like another place to stop by. And aside from the bonfire, it really felt insignificant compared to the rest of the game. Majula, on the other hand, is where you always return to. And, as you continue to go on throughout the game, more people occupy it, building it up more and more, even if by a little bit. The music gives a somber tone, but it also strengthens what the growing town brings: hope. As if it were a new ember being brought to life, even if it would eventually flicker out in the future, whether near or distant.
    I look way to deep into these things. Help me.

      rmhanzel the layout was a lot more diverse in 3 then 2, yes it wasn’t as complex as 1 but no other souls game is. But they made the game have alternate paths and there is a lot of different ways to go about the game, it’s somewhat linear, but when you think about it all the souls games are line war to some degree. Also all souls games it’s beat a boss then bonfire and move to the next area so that’s not a valid complaint, dark souls one had the best world design but dark souls 3 hands down has the best level design, the bosses for the most part were great and some of the best in the series and if you disagree well there are millions of souls players who agree an me on that.

      Yes, this bothers me so much. I'm not saying people have to like Ds3 but it's so fucking absurd when people say it's a bad game. The souls fanbase that you're referring to will never be happy. They want a carbon copy of ds1 but then they want something completely different and unique. Like those types of people will hate it because it doesn't fit their perfect fucking vision of what it should be. Most of them can't even find one good thing about it. It's funny how now all of a sudden everyone's a ds2 apologist. That shows you how little they actually know of what they want of of the souls series.

    My main complaint with the game mechanic-wise (and just a prior heads-up: this is on Xbox 360 and I'm unable to connect to Xbox Live so I don't know if it was ever patched out or not) was that very often when an enemy runs at you (which happens quite a lot) and I try to anticipate and get in a well-timed strong attack from the Claymore, the character somehow turns about 90 or more degrees to the side, completely missing the attack. This happened so much more often than it should, to the point where I *expect* it to happen and so using a thrusting attack (I'm pretty sure it happened with other weapons as well) on any enemy who is moving rapidly at me, and when it does, it very often gets me killed or at the very least has me waste an Estus sip. Recently, I noticed it even happens when I do the normal swings, but thankfully they're wide enough to still connect despite it, whereupon the character seems to face the right way again. I don't know if anyone has had this problem, but it's really frustrating.
    Story-wise, I have grievances with it as well, but I think those are far too detailed for this comment and I don't think anyone would read it (let alone respond) if I made it that long. I watched Hbomberguy's video about the game shortly after (completely accidentally) finishing the story, so I understand its main themes just fine, whereas I didn't at first. Here's all I'm really going to say about it: I went into Dark Souls (1) having never even heard the name. It must have taken me at least 9 months (including intervals, sometimes months-long, of absence due to rage quitting or not knowing where the path to a new area was) but, despite occasional help from RUclips for navigation or to know when I'd see some of the side characters again (even starting to get into reading books around the same time iirc), I remembered, without writing anything down, what the NPCs told me and eventually, after the Bells of Awakening, I understood how to move forward in the story. Only roughly, but it was all I needed. By the time I got to the end, it felt like the end of a meticulous journey about what it means to be human, and it felt good. In DS2, I knew what type of game I was in for and had no intervals of stopping for anything short of my studies. Yet, aside from the vague "gather greater souls" or "produce the King's symbol", at no point did I understand what I was working towards. When I (repeat: completely accidentally) got to the end, my only reaction was: "...huh?"

    • @SilverMont
      @SilverMont  6 лет назад

      Are you holding the left analog stick in a direction whilst you swing? Dark Souls II has a thing where with certain weapons (most obvious with bigger ones) you can change the direction of the swing with the left analog stick, even when locked-on. You just need to train yourself to get into the habit of releasing the left stick once you start swinging.

    • @TimCools_WithALongO
      @TimCools_WithALongO 6 лет назад

      I'm not sure. I don't think so. If I am, then it's most likely still just forwards, towards the enemy, who themselves is often already in their own attack animation by then (and since I'm locked on, the camera is perfectly still). At least I'm very certainly not holding it in the angle the character goes (which I think is always to the right). I recall one time the character did a full 180 even though the enemy absolutely didn't get behind me at any point and didn't even approach that fast. I won't be able to test it out until next weekend, but I'll be sure to compare when I'm playing again. It really just happens at the very last instant before the character leans in for the thrust.
      Have you ever had that happen yourself?

    • @TimCools_WithALongO
      @TimCools_WithALongO 6 лет назад

      Just tested it out, and it absolutely happened irrespective of whether or not I was touching the left stick (and massive got me killed, you should've seen it). If it helps you envision it better: I tested it in the Old Iron Keep, by the first bonfire, on the Alonne Knights, especially though not exclusively on the ones who charge you before and on the bridge to the Smelter Demon.

    I've just been replaying DS2: SOTFS, and I'd have to add two more connected ones: poor in-area enemy variety, and extremely tedious encounter set-ups. While it's a problem throughout, in places like the Iron Keep and shrine of Amana, the second issue really shows in Crown of the Iron King. I count 6 main encounters that are just awful, even having gone through this DLC before and knowing what's coming, these encounters just require tedious pre-work or just come down to luck/extreme foreknowledge to be able to survive.
    1 - Room of Doom - I think we all know the one. Drop down into a virtually no escape room with one iron warrior (that you haven't encountered before) and a boat load of regular enemies, an ashen idol, and one extra enemy throwing bombs just as the cherry on top. Trying to maneuver and use the wonky barrel enemies and sniping really feels like the only option here, even if it's cheap.
    2 - Lightning assassins after doom - Right after you leave and destroy a possessed armor, you meet another new enemy... who is a ranged/melee hybrid (fume sorcerer). Cool enemy, neat concept, but then you have a few normal enemies that decide to pop out of the ash behind you while you are on the way there while he is zapping you. Not the worst encounter, but a cheap punch that can easily kill you, especially immediately after the previous one.
    3 - Shadow Tower - Maldron the Assassin, anyone? Once again, a really neat idea, and actually rather well executed.... but if you let Maldron escape (and its mostly a crap shoot whether you can stop him or not) you may as well head back, even without him we are talking an enormously difficult swarm of regular enemies and possessed armor, backed up by an ashen idol that curses you and refuses to let them die. Also with more bomb throwers to throw you off. Thankfully, not required to beat the DLC, but it does have some great rewards.
    4 - Shadow Hall - Same overall issues as Shadow Tower, just in a cramped hallway with four or five enemies (one of whom is a possessed armor).
    5 - Triple Iron Warrior - I just find the iron warriors to be difficult by themselves, but having three of them sprout from the ground like tulips is just absurd. There is no warning as to where they are or how many there are the first time you go down, and dealing with two at the same time is practically a death sentence.
    6 - Memory of the Old Iron King - Sir Alonne is amazing, but the swarm of Alonne knights backed up by salamanders in the first room and an archer killzone in the second is just horrible. If you can't break the Alonne knight's poise, they will just slash and stab you to death as they come at you two/three at a time. Adding ranged enemies to the mix is just cruel, the whole area has me beating my head against the desk every time. I finally decided to just patiently wear down the encounter numbers until there was nothing left so I could peacefully stroll to the actually really good boss
    It's not that these are just difficult, it's that these are encounters that end up with you dealing with situations that can lead to almost guaranteed death if not dealt with in extremely specific ways, and often involve threats that you have no way of knowing about until after you are already doomed. The high damage output of enemies in this area makes getting out of a bad situation almost impossible, especially if they've popped up behind you without warning. It's not fun, it just feels arbitrary. The bosses, on the other hand, are the best in DS2. Oh, and this is not even mentioning the extra multiplayer focused areas in each of the DLCs (like Iron Passage). All of that said, I still think there is a consistently decent quality level on most of the locations in DS2, and, mixed with the overall glut of content, actually pushes it ahead of the teeny tiny world of DS3 in my book. It's not as good as 1 though.

  • @FourNamesFourEyes

    Recently replayed this game. It's got its perks and is overally by all means a decent game. However, I have no idea why some people consider this their favorite souls game, or even better than 3, But that's just me and my ftiends. We just find it unnecessarily slow and clunky, as well as relatively boring to look at for the most part. Then again, we also think PVP is trash no matter what game, so that's not a factor for us.
    On a side note. What the actual fuck is wrong with me? I got to the fume knight scared as hell, knowing that this was supposedly the boss that gave people the most trouble, and I beat it on my second try. Yeah he does a lot of damage, but he's not really all that hard. When I went to fight Sir Allone, however, I got my ass handed to me on a silver platter, that guy was intense, but totally amazing.

Gonna play it again soon (Scholar this time) and try out some different classes and weapons I never really used that much, and I'm super excited to visit this world again.

    After playing all the souls game ds2 always seems to stand out in a good and bad way in my opinion. I feel I've spent most of my time on ds1 and ds2 out of the 5 and the I think the reason many people hate this game as I initially did was it's poor visuals and level design and its clunky weapon arts. The reason this game has replay value is because of its extensive arsenal of weapons and armor but the actual content and boss's design is lacking in my view and that's probably why people seem to either love or hate this game.

      @SilverMont  7 лет назад

      Hopefully DaS1 will get a port to PS4. But yeah, PS4 is probably the best way to play DaS2, or on PC if you don't mind running into more hackers.
      And the first game? It's very similar to the third, from a mechanical perspective. DaS1, BB DaS3 and Demon's Souls all feel pretty similar, DaS2 is the one that stands out as being different. You can level up at any bonfire in the first game, you can also upgrade and repair your weapons at the bonfires if you have a certain item. Warping at bonfires can only be done about halfway through the game though.
      All of the games are good though, so I'd say yeah, you'd probably enjoy it.

Only O&S, Artorias and Manus gave me a little bit of a hard time (well, and Capra demon but that is just due to horrible design and camera).
