Perhaps you have heard this before. This song is about his father, that was missing in his life. His Belgium mother had Stromae with a Rwandese father. When he was young: his father was killed in the massacres between Hutu's and Tutsi's in Rwanda. His mother could not tell the little boy. So she made up a story about his father being a traveling business man. Why is life so tragic... I think there is a correlation between excellent art and suffering. Somehow: the more the artist has suffered: the deeper the music.

Your interpretation of Papaoutai is beautiful. I saw it as young Stromae watching other kids learn about their parents' cultural heritage. And on the other hand young Stromae can't because his African father isn't there.
The way each family danced resembled various cultural styles of dance and martial arts. When young Stromae is dancing he is actually incorporating some African dances as a way to reconnect with that missing part of his life.

Have you heard "L'Enfer" ? It's my favourite from his last album and the lyrics are painfully golden. His last album is all about loneliness and feeling estranged from others. It's so sad but yet so relatable in the "post-"COVID context, it's really worth a careful listen. 👌

Stromae wrote this song because his father, who was a Rwandan architectural student in Brussels when he met Stromae’s mother, a Flemish lady, left her and Paul (Stromae’s real name”) when he was 2 to go back to Rwanda. When Stromae was 9, having never had much interaction with his father and was never recognized officially by him, his father was murdered during the Tutsi genocide in 1994. Stromae was 9, but he never knew what happened to his dad until he was 12. How do you explain that your father was hacked to death with one million other Tutsi in a genocidal mass murder to a child?
Stromae said the first version of this song was much angrier, he never had the chance to get to know his dad. But he is a very humble person and said he rewrote it because he is not important, he wanted to reach anyone who grew up with an absent father. I hope this helps, if you didn’t know his history. I enjoyed your interpretation immensely. Intelligent and sensitive. Thank you!

Very good interpretation, from what Stromae has said, refers to an absent father and the permanent desire to have him, the question where is your dad? it is what the little ones without a father suffer, it is the question of other children, it is the doubt of many children without a father. The last thing is just what you say and that often happens, history repeats itself, as a pattern to follow, just as children followed their parents. Thank you for the respect with which you treat Stromae's work

Imo the interpretation of the end would be that the absence of the boy's father in the video means that it would be a vicious cycle. Noone to learn from, so he himself would eventually become an absent father. That's my take. Glad you enjoyed the video. I think you'll love *Tous le meme and Alor en danse* 😭💜

Paul Van Haver was born in Brussels and raised in the city's Laeken district, to a Rwandan Tutsi father, Pierre Rutare, and a Flemish mother, Miranda Van Haver. He and his siblings were raised by their mother, as his father, an architect, was killed during the 1994 Rwandan genocide,

I love alot of stromaes music. The part where the dad is with his son who looks a little lost with his father dancing, where looks like the son may not want to dance but I see it as more of like a mentoring scene like teaching his son something, teaching his son how to dance and is helping him correct it. Like how when you are first learning something as a kid its supposed to be your parents who are teaching you and helping you learn and correct your mistakes like when riding a bike or learning how to do things yourself as you get older and how he did not have that mentor growing up where a father would be. Which is kinda what I also had as kid growing up, single mom raising two with both fathers out of the picture to also be there as like a second mentor.

Stromae was 9, like the kid in the video, when his father was killed in the Rwanda genocide. What did his mother tell him, and as a kid what question where asked at the Belgium schools, when they flew from Rwanda and immigrated in Belgium?… This is definitely about the father loss and seek, and about becoming a grown up and a father, question that were struggling him at the time he wrote this song. And yes, it is sad, even heartbreaking, as most of Stromae’s songs. ❤😢❤

Really pertinent analysis ! I think the clip has multiple (2 mains) ways of interpretations: firstly, knowing that Stromae ‘s father died in Africa ,during the Rwandese genocide, and his family hided it to the young stromae, can let us understand that the kid grows without a father , he hopes his return but it’s just an illusion. But the idea of the communication is really good too, I think he told in an interview about the double sense (physical and social absence of the father)

Your insightful reaction and breakdown of this song literally brought me to tears. I love this song and have listened to many reactions; some pretty good at putting a name to the meaning within the song and others who completely missed it. Your reaction is the best and most insightful of any of the others. If you'd like to be introduced to a different type of music, the group Pentatonix did a cover of this song. They made it not quite as sad, but their rendition is excellent with fabulous harmonies.

The story behind the song is quite sad actually. Stromae lost his dad during the genocide of Rwanda. This song is about him lacking a dad figure in his life when he was growing up

I'm French, lucky me to understand what he says without searching the translation :)
You should listen to "L'enfer". He talks about the depression he fought and it's very powerful to me. It's my favourite song because I have depression and it makes me fell kind of less lonely.

The song is about having an absent father, watching everyone else with their relationships with their parents. In the end, you end up turning into your parents.

First, excuse my bad english, I'm French 🙂
I discovered your channel with this title of Stromae.
And I'm amazed, because I've seen a lot of reaction videos on "Papaoutai", and I have to admit, despite your age, and the fact that you don't know the story of Stromae, that it's the one that is the smartest, finest, that I have seen. I loved your reaction.
I would love for you to react to more of his tracks, Stromae is such a talented artist, who has a lot of wonderful tracks, and it would be nice to see your reactions.
    Especially for :
    " Quand c'est "
    " Tous les mêmes "
    " Carmen "
    " Santé "
    " L'enfer "
    " Fils de joie "
Looking forward to seeing your reactions.

It's really impressive as a not french speaker you interpreted so much from the video. I always feel like Stromae's songs can be so hard to get for non-french speaker because he plays with words and their multiple meanings in french but you proved me wrong.
