  • Mountain biking like all extreme sports isn’t without any risk, accidents and crashes happen to even the most experienced of riders. Carrying a first aid kit doesn’t add much weight to your pack, will give you peace of mind and in the event of a crash or injury is essential. Here Jess talks you through the different options that you should consider carrying when out on the trails.

    First aid qualifications and courses are a worthwhile investment. Always seek professional medical advice in the event of an injury.
    Whether you’re buying a ready made kit or building your own there are a few basics to consider. For shorter trail rides a lighter first aid kit will suffice but if you’re about to embark upon a multi-day wilderness adventure, you should consider taking a more comprehensive kit with you. In an emergency, jerseys and inner tubes can be useful, but there is no substitute for proper training and supplies. Don’t forget to pack it in a waterproof and robust bag and keep the kit accessible in your pack.

    I don't carry a first aid kit I take my wife with me ?
    She is a parmedic.
    I carry all the bits we need for the bikes & she carry a first aid kit that is so big I think it was of the ambulance.
    But when I do crash all she asks now is are you bleeding? Have you broken any bones ? If I shout back no she just tell me to get up & get on with it lol
    Always good to have your own parmedic lol

      I assume she gave you rudimentary first aid/trauma training so that you could save her life if the time ever came. I do think it would be best to split the less specialized bike and medical gear between the both of you. That way if one of you loses a pack you aren't completely screwed.

    The best thing to bring in your first aid kit is common sense ... the 2nd best thing to bring is first aid training - preferably Wilderness FA! Nice vid though.

      Well, FA training of any sort is good, and a basic FA kit. Also, a cell phone is vital - to download a first aid app and/or to contact emergency services (if you have a signal).

    If you’re ever riding alone it’s a great idea to put an ID card in your first aid kit in case you take a big knock and get knocked out. If someone finds you and calls an ambulance they’ll need to know your information. Apart from that, great video GMBN!

    I recommend a 4" T3 israeli bandage. They are great for severe bleedings and junctional injuries.
    You should also ALWAYS carry a space blanket. They keep people warm and dry. People can die from exposure after a serious injury. It can also be used to carry people.
    The space blanket can also be used as a tourniquet: Unfold it a into a long strip about 10cm wide, wrap it around the extremity 2 times and tie it off. Then put your pump or trauma sheers under the knot and turn until the bleeding stops.

      @@calebwalle5330 He did a good job. The hardest thing to teach someone is to keep cool and do what they need to do.
      That being said, there's room for improvments like getting the puncture above the heart, use a tourniquet that doesn't stretch. Smaller stuff.
      If you want to be awesome at first aid, get a volunteer job as a first aider/first responder/EMS. Your riding buddies and their families will love you for it. I'm a first aider/first responder for my local Red Cross department in Denmark. They paid for my training (54 hours) and I have 100+ hours of work time.

      @calebwalle5330 5 лет назад +1

      Hey, I'm a student paramedic in Australia, i thought he did good at putting lots of pressure on the bleed, identifying it was still spurting blood and then using a tourniquet to stop the bleed whilst taking control of the scene and getting Seth to call an ambulance and relaying the important information to the dispatchers.raising the legs might of helped a little bit bit to raise blood pressure but you also want to keep the injured leg still so that clotting can begin. Space blanket (thermo blanket) would of also been a good consideration especially if he was showing signs of hypovolemic shock. i always carry a CAT tourniquet and Israeli bandage on my rides, luckily i have not had to use them on the trails yet.

    Another thing you can bring if you dont have a first aid is duct tape and or super glue, I sliced my finger so bad that it was dripping blood and I couldn't get it to stop bleeding all I had was super glue and I squeezed the wound shut dried it off and put superglue and went to the hospital I also put duct tape to keep it shut and the hospital told me that was a good move, it's what the military uses

    Had a real nasty spill that broke both bones in my leg, one of which was a compound fracture. Luckily I did have a real good first aid kit with me and even though I thought I forgot most of it my training from the ole Air Force days saved my ass. Clip in, there is a story involved lol. So yeah, was shakin down a new bike, just a test ride to see what needed adjusting, what bolts were loose, etc... Going through a rock garden something happened when I tapped the front brake (to be fair I did a light pull on both but problem happened up front so blaming that one lol) and instead of going over the bars in a rock garden I instinctively put my foot down, it got caught between the frame and the crank and when the bike flipped it turned my leg into an L. I did the normal yell for help that I have had to respond to myself in the past and waited. Well the ppl who found me happened to be 2 like 12 year old kids and of course they started freaking out, but luckily they had phones because mine did not survive the fall. I get one of them on the phone with 911 and ask the other one to help me remove my pack, which when he got close to me and saw the damage he super freaked and started crying. He did get me my pack though so there is that at least lol. So to try and calm them down I figured I had to get my leg looking normal and covered up.....and here comes the super kit. I managed to get the calmer kid to help me get my shoe off (I know bad idea but where the exit wound was I needed it off) got my medical scissors and cut my sock off, got my saline flush to rinse the wound, drowned it in a bit of alcohol, got a cold compress out to help with swelling and lastly my ace bandage to hold everything in place and help stop the bleeding. Once I was bandaged up the kids did settle down so mission accomplished...it was painful as hell putting my leg back into a normal alignment, but hey doc said I did a damn good job setting it in the woods lol. Now as a kicker the damn rescue squad could not find me on the mountain and those kids could not support my weight to carry me down so what did my dumb ass do with an open wound, drug myself through the woods to the closest pavement and waited there. I say that was dumb because that is where the major damage happened, got all sorts of dirty hence got 2 bad ass infections at first and had me hospitalized for a week and in home health with a PICC line for another month after that...THENNN because my body thinks I needed to learn more it decided to give me a super bad ass bone infection AND blood infection thus landing me in the hospital for anther week dammit. I still have about another month before I can walk again and lost most of my season to this damn leg....dont worry bike is fine though and waiting for the Doc to give me the all clear to go weight bearing again lol.

    I really do miss some important stuff we always got with us in the netherlands... like a cooling pack. So importend... or when you cannot continue, something to safely move you. And that triangle thing (do not remember what it's called) NEVER use that! Those only need to be used by professionals. Let the injured person hold it's arm by himself. When something is injured, you want to move it as little as possible, plus that the person who is injured self the best feeling has for what is right and what is wrong. When you go mountainbiking you have got to realise paramedics are a very long way. So always bring a blanket and always make sure you can keep you sweaty body warm! And what I think is most important in your kid is; a good charged phone with a location sharing so that people who are not with you can exactly see where you are. I don't mean it in a negative way because it is really really really good you made this video!! Keep it up!😊

    Another really good and importartitem to consider taking is a torniquette, they are pretty small and even can be crafted out of inner tubes but THIS coud save a life, last summer I had a big crash and broke my femur but not just fractured my femur I had an exposed fracture. I wasnt very far from medical services but the location was hard to access in a helicopter and was waiting one about an hour, if I hadnt taken a torniquette I would have probably bleeded out and died there so it saved my life. I think that a torniquette is so important because the main type of injury cyclists suffer are traumas and a quick and effective way to stop bleeding is a torniquette so please consider learning how to use it and take one you never know when it could save your life.

      Tourniquets are great to have but for a lot of people don't know how to use them correctly and this can cause its own set of problems. If there's only space for one item in the jersey pocket or small bag, I would encourage everyone to take a triangular bandage, as it can be used as a sling, wound pad, bandage, tourniquet, and probably more.
      Hope you're healing up well from that big off.

    On the trail I carry a quick clot bandage wrapped with athletic tape. Anything that requires less than a quick clot, I can get back to my car where I have a full kit.

    You did not mentioned a tourniquet and splints. The former could let you not bleed to death in the event of great vessel (especially artery) injury. The latter in case of fracture will allow you to be evacuated from woods or any other remote area with less risk of getting compound/open fracture.

      Old hat - not teached at basic level as done wrong is likely to make it worse. That's major trumua stuff and one wrong move and suddenly things ain't so pretty.
      For general first aid it's easier and safer not to teach it to someone not regularly training and using the skills.
      Don't get me wrong a split and tourniquet is a good technique to have but both have risks.
      Don't forget this video is for general population with either zero or basic first aid at work at best.

    Wonderful video
    A lot of people don’t know how to use a first aid kit
    Bivouc bag and Eblanket? Don’t know why you’d need both?
    On a over night trip your already self reliant
    It would be good if the first aiders would run Bush first aid course
    Even on a short trip there tends to be no support
    Like for coller bone problems, pull the bottom of the shirt up and use a big big safety pin on the opposite of the neck in to the shirt
    Thank you very much

    Something I'd suggest as both a St John ambulance volunteer and mountain biker would be to have combine dressings for major bleeding heavy crepe bandages for strapping sprains and a medium crepe one for bleeding as well as possible a sam splint if u have the training on how to splint broken bones most importantly use common sense and take a first aid course in Australia I'd suggest a one day provide first aid course or the equivalent for your country

    you forgot cable ties. Very good for holding on dressings when you are in the middle of nowhere and everything is wet. Need to join the ties together so take plenty.

    Always, always, take a warm layer with you. Exposure kills much, MUCH faster than most wounds. Forget the safety pins, they’re useless, use tape instead. Also, slings. Most people will not let you sling their fractures - they’ll hold them, and won’t let you anywhere near, but if they do let you, tuck their hand inside their collar - it’ll do a collar and cuff sling really nicely. Take a tourniquet. Really, really do. You will likely not need it, but if you do, and you haven’t got one, you deaded!

    What would you do if bit by a snake on the trail? In a recent ride I passed a Southern Diamondback Rattlesnake in central Florida, which took a strike at me and luckily missed my leg. It got me wondering about biking back to the parking lot and pumping that venom through my blood stream. Of course start with a tourniquet, but then what?

    • @Duncan23
      @Duncan23 5 лет назад

      Probably not the best channel to ask, we don't have any dangerous snakes in the UK.

      I think most EMT's and doctors these days say NOT to apply a tourniquet. Cutting the bite and trying to suck out the venom is useless as well. Sometimes a bite is just that and no venom is released, but if the wound swells quickly and turns color, it probably was released. Try to stay as calm as possible and keep your heart rate as low as possible. Keep the bite below your heart and remove anything constricting in the area of the bite. (shoes, jewelry, knee pads, etc.) Obviously call 911 as soon as you can and follow their instructions until you can get proper medical attention.

    • @FloridaTrailrider
      @FloridaTrailrider 5 лет назад

      Mark Stover I think that is your best bet. Trauma units can get there way quicker than you can get. Ack on a bike. Although it's an expensive helicopter ride.

    • @jerryvolpini7987
      @jerryvolpini7987 5 лет назад

      Wrap the bitten area (leg, arm) tightly and keep it below heart level. Remain calm (well, as calm as possible) and seek immediate medical attention. Get a description of the snake, if possible, but not at the expense of being bitten (again) or someone else. A cell phone is also a vital first aid tool, have one with you. The good news is, most venomous snakes are not fatal if treated immediately (I said, most, not all).
