"Bob Weir and John Barlow's wonderful 1980 song was mostly played as a show-opener, and allowed the Dead to jam powerfully to start the show. Like Shakedown Street, Feel Like A Stranger had a long, extended jam after the vocals, and gave Jerry unlimited space to explore his musical ideas. Always a favourite opener of mine, and this one features Bruce on accordion more than a year after he'd left active touring with the Grateful Dead." - David Lemieux
God damn Jerry! This is such a good example of the notes between the notes. It's like everyone is playing Stranger and Jerry is up there putting his signature little twang and high notes all over the place!
So, I was at these 2 shows but I've gone back and listened and listened and Jerry's guitar solo and really the way Phil and the whole band is playing during this feel like a stranger so amazing. Anytime someone talks about Jerry's best playing being back in the 70s, or that everything after Vince is trash, or just any of these ridiculous statements that people seem to so lazily toss around, I always suggest this particular version of feel like a stranger. Jerry's guitar playing in 93 was not only consistent , but he hit a guitar-playing peak that year. His knowledge of Harmony and his skills and his relatively good health at that time all come together and it's one of my favorite years of Grateful Dead music. But yeah, this stranger just kicks ass!! There's another unreal Kick-Ass moment in 1993, the jam out of Terrapin from Deer Creek. Oh my God
Indeed ! great analysis - I"m just wondering what the 11 people who pressed "not like" were thinking- probably because they didnt have their reading glasses on and clicked the wrong icon . Made that mistake myself so in true deadhead spirit I shall not judge ! LOL
I fucking love this band so much !!! Jerry passed and in 97 further came near my home town. THANK YOU SOOO MUCH for remaining a band and facilitating such wonderful music . Now I’m 43 and wondering what band my kids might wanna travel the country devoted to music and friends and love 💚❤️💚❤️
anybody notice at 1:54 the dude throwing something (gum?) into the hair of the chick on the other dude's shoulders?! LOL he's like "get down out of my view"!
That’s funny. I’m pretty sure I’m the dude in the backward hat 2 over from the chick. Hahahaha for real. Was there. Was up close for sting and the opener.
I always think of hearing without a net for the first time when I here Feel Like a Stranger, one of my favorite Dead albums of all time. These were the Bruuuuuce days which should have been its own album
Very cool to see Jerry & his rig closeup. The rack mounted pedals is especially interesting and it's cool to see what pedals were being used, as well as their settings! 🤓
Jerry not relying on his Octave Divider as much for this tune as he did in the 80's which gave it that signature sound. I don't know if Healy was gone at this point but this FoH mix has too much Vince for one thing.
Bill B tempo is one of the reasons I stopped going to see Ratdog, the very lazy opening jams that seemed flat. I have not seen any incarnations of the Dead for 12 years. It’s not for me, that being said, I’m glad they are still going strong and playing for the people that never got to see the Grateful Dead etc... I am glad that there are these hq videos and recordings available to everyone, anytime we want them.
There are many songs that Dead & Co. play really well, and kick ass at the right tempo. Stranger isn’t one of them. Another one that jumps to mind is Jack Straw. Way to slowwwww!
"Buuuut Jerry was a walking corpse from 91 on, haven't you heard? He drooled his way thru every show and totally forgot how to play the guitar..... " Is a lame opinion that I'm so tired of hearing. A genius like Jerry is never going fully fade away. Even in 95 it shone through. I say bring on more 90a dead!
@@kevinr.3542 your'e right and i have to admit that i"m guilty of having this opinion sometimes. This performance is a reminder that they could catch fire, even in the late years. For me, my hang ups with the post-Brent era have to do with Vince and his keyboard tones. but easy to ignore Vince when jerry is playing this well. cheers Kevin!
I was there. Hot as shit. Everyone gathering in clumps around the The Pit or General Admission floor seats. Then BAM. Bum rush the floor. Then the next wave would go. Seemed so coordinated . Great show.
Is this the first song in the 'All the years live' series that wasn't previously taken from an official video release??? I think it is....and I was there!!
Hey now! What a tasty version on my 4th Birthday! I only wish my parents were deadheads growing up so I could say I was there to see Jerry still kickin'
I was twelve at the time of this performance. Was supposed to see them for the first time in 95/96 with my uncle, but Jerry sadly passed away before we made it. First time in my life I cried for a stranger’s death. Second was David Bowie a few years ago. So glad for RUclips and all the releases over the intervening years. Maybe once coronavirus stops ruling our lives I can catch Dead & Co.! Saw Phil Lesh and Friends in 2000, but was too high 😅
They sound amazing I dont know how anyone could complain..... The way Bobby's semi mulletish hair blows in the wind is what got my attention and its debateable.
Noise gates were most likely used. Anything above or below a certain threshold is basically muted in the mix. The other thing they would do is basically mute part of one guy’s kit, usually Mickey. His toms might be loud and his hi hats prominent, but the engineer would pull way back on everything else on his drum set until it was time for the drums. Sometimes anyway. Being the pulse of the band Billy’s bass and snare drums were consistently popping out of the mix but they did keep the overheads (cymbals) very controlled it’s true because otherwise it’s this giant wash of high end noise that makes it impossible to clearly mix everybody else. There were six or seven guys up there soloing and using MIDI .... something had to give! Quite candidly I thought the overall sound and groove got a lot cleaner and tighter in 1992-1994 when Mickey would eschew the traditional drum kit and play on some African type drums with mallets. Listen to “Scarlet - Fire” from 6-19-94 as an effective example. Hypnotic and cleaned up the overall sound of the band a lot.
If you listen to the Chapel Hill soundboard recordings from spring of 93, you will hear, especially between songs, someone toggling certain microphones on and off. When they're on, you get a lot more stage and crowd noise but you hear the cymbals, and then whoever is running the mix turns them 'off' and you lose a lot of treble and cymbals overall. I'm no live sound expert or anything but you can definitely hear that.... and then, in the summer 93 shows, you get that flat sound again. A lot of mid-range but just not a lot of treble... I believe that was the first year they put all the amplifiers under the stage oh, so I don't know what all that has to do with it but they were clearly working out the Kinks. I-95 they were really starting to get the audio quality dialed in for all that and frankly the sound of the band (as far as sound quality) is way better in 95 than the two years before.
vince absoletly kills this Stranger. He is just turned up a little bit to high in the mix so it comes out so overpowering at times. One of my favorite jams Ive heard with him so far. Really paying a lot of attention to the jam, just a little bit to much louder then everyone else in the mix, like 3-10% too much.
Yeah Vince was a poor choice. '93 was the last year I saw Jerry at Cal Expo in California, and he was terrific. I love how understated his playing is here. Like Billy once said, one of the things he most appreciated about Jerry's playing is that he was an ensemble player. He wasn't always out lout in front, but listening to his guitar work was often just so mesmerizing.
Hyzer's Pro Disc Golf and Smoke Shop Brent was kind of a muse for Jerry, for whatever reason. I have friends like that, and when they’re gone, hurts like a bitch!

Amazing the difference between this and just two years later. This is Jerry in prime form on the best version of Stranger I've seen.
Garcia crisply shredding throughout '93. Great footage beginning at 7:45. The master!
Wooop - Im doin a crazy dance somewhere on the floor of this show!!!!!
It always does my heart good to see Jerry smile, especially in these later shows knowing he probably didn't feel great.

Very nice to hear Vince up front in the mix-agree w others-some really good shows that year.
Love the shots of the drummers feeling the grove. It looks like Bill is having a lot of fun with this one.
they are sounding good on this one!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! they always played good shows in DC.........
The last I saw a few years later 😔 a great show though
Inside you're burning! ❤️⚡💙
My all time favorite dead tune.
See how good these songs are when played at the proper tempo!
Ive said it before and ill say it again: you cant tell an artist how to play their own music

That is a stellar Stranger. Holy shite! For any year. God bless Jerome.

Jerry noodled with sting on Walking on the Moon. Sting was a fantastic opener playing police and covers

Why are most of Billy and Mickey's cymbals inaudible, that was a common theme in the late 80's and 90's
HaliniSnow yup, very strange.
Seriously? Listen to 92 esp Europe 92 it’s awful. Ruins the mix
