English translation:
(Madaling Araw) Near the Break of Morn
My beloved, listen to the whisp' rings of my heart
Would that you perceive how in loving one gets hurt
Save me, spare me your piteous heart-rending glance
If only to kindle the embers to sustain my breath at once.
In the depths of yonder dark, you are the approaching dawn Then dangle me a vine of sympathy, a hand to fawn
Should in dying, I die the death of one who's with grief stricken
Just be near, just be near and I would breathe and quicken.
Should that happen to me, indeed how fortunate would I deemed be
With joy would I be filled to the brim and you did it for me
The day is slowly, slowly breaking, my love and my light
Come my beloved and envelop me with delight
Nymph, how fortunate now will my life be
I have seen your charm and beauty.
The dawn's my life and my beacon
Come my beloved and envelop me with your passion.
Look yonder window, dear, you're my light my darling
the day is slowly breaking
Kundiman (originally spelled Cundiman) is a genre of traditional Filipino love songs. The lyrics of the Kundiman are written in Tagalog. The melody is characterized by a smooth, flowing and gentle rhythm with dramatic intervals. Kundiman was the traditional means of serenade in the Philippines.

My mom taught me this song in my elementary years (Grade III I think) as a competition song during the Araw ng Wika. It was supposed to be my dad who's my mentor since mom was not really a singer, it so happened that dad was in Manila attending a conference and won't be back until the competition is long finished. So, I have to rely on my mom's sintonado voice only to realize later that she was really hitting the right tune. I was ready to quit because the guitarist who was not familiar with kundiman songs has difficulty hitting the right cords but we persevered. I won first place...it turned out that I was the only one who sang an "old" and very-rare-to-hear kundiman song. Thanks so much for uploading this...it helps me remember the good old days...

Remember my Cousin Love this Song.Mga Kundiman,Beautiful.
Wonderfully and masterfully performed, Pete. It gave me the shivers.
Pete you gave justice to this kundiman .
@musiktenor We live in different times indeed... though you can now send your RUclips serenade video... by Facebook, right? And would you believe I serenaded my wife? We were in a musical (Carousel, by Rodgers and Hammerstein II) and both had lead roles. Our acting and singing on stage brought us together in real life. ;-)
Look forward to more videos from you.
PS: Don't forget to add more tag words to your list, it helps : musiktenor, tenor, song, philippines, traditional, fillipino, love, ...
Wonderful performance; love the interpretation. Perfect voice range, phrasing and dynamics. Keep singing this genre.
Just wonderful, and thank you for keeping the best of Filipino music alive.
@trudbol Thanks Julien! Just imagine this type of songs were used to serenade young ladies back in the early days. The tradition is now gone. No more serenading... just texting and emailing...and perhaps by using facebook!
Fresh from the crucible, the lyrics below were just posted at the AllPoetry.com venue. Take it for a test drive and let me know how it rides. I'd be much obliged.

Dawn-Dreaming*
[Madaling Araw]
(coda)
Glance my way, my darling,
Dream, and inspiration:
Let’s own one glorious dawn!!!
(1)
Hear and sympathize
My heartbeat’s anxiety
Might you realize
Loving’s grim sobriety
Deign a wink you fling
From your eyes enchanting
For they have shown, the lone beacon
Through life’s forlorn, long sojourn.
(2)
Midst the darkest night of gloom,
Dawns the daybreak, bright in bloom
Grace me with your dignity
Born of love and charity
Should I meet final demise
From the grief that love decries
To my side arrive, by my side survive
Soon life shall revive.
(3)
Should things turn out that way, my sweet,
Count my life mighty fortunate
To live in joy and bliss surfeit
And all because of you
The dawn my love, is breaking through
My solace and my joy
Come hither neither fret,
Nor quit, love me sans regret.
(4)
My life is joyful dear, beyond control
Simply because you’re beautiful,
Daybreak my dear is waking soon
Muse of my heart, splendor of my dawn
Hither you come, my dear
Pamper me with loving care:
(5)
Glance my way, my darling,
Dream, and inspiration:
Let’s own one glorious dawn!!!

*Dawn-Dreaming is a locution designed to convey the wishful thinking component of the song. Dawn has been used as a metaphor for hope and new beginnings since time immemorial. I love this type of music.. full of feelings and passion. I just can't seem to find an album where every kundiman songs were performed by Pete Avedano.
Pete Avendano might be related to my wife who was formerly an Avendano.
