  • Roosevelt’s New Deal sponsored The Federal Writer’s Project. It originated in 1935 legislation formally designated Federal Number One. The WPA aka Works Project Admin bill was created to establish art programs. Roosevelt approved the bill inclosing the federal writer’s program in Sept 1935. He authorized a trial expenditure of $6,288,000 and a staff of 6500. (6 million is 100,000000 today).
The director of the Project, Henry G Alsberg Displayed particular sensitivity toward developing a program capable of capturing the Afro-American legacy, a collection which would include folklore, institutional studies, life histories, and slave narratives. Alsberg had inherited a rudimentary program designed to interview ex-slaves as a part of the 1934 Federal Emergency Relief Admin.
