    Thank you for this video, Alexander. Your shield fencing interpretation appears to be quite elaborate - very cool! I also enjoy the nice landscape and outfits ;)

      Thanks a lot Michael! Viking shield is my real passion, I try to improve myself as good as I can. I am not sure if you have read my reply to your last comment, but we can test some stuff out with the shield as soon as physical events are a thing again! :)

    Beautiful and helpful video! Well done.
    One thing I would like to mention nevertheless is that the presented kind of thumb-up/pistol grip is only viable with this 'unhistorically' long grip. That does not mean that short gripped swords of the viking / early medieval style do not allow for a pistol grip. But you would probably be forced to rest several fingers on the pommel instead (so it becomes even more pistol-like). Weather this is historically correct is up for discussion, I guess. If this even is of any interest for you.

      Thanks, I am glad you liked it!
      Interestingly, I made the opposite experience. I have done a video answers to your point, since this questions keep popping up. ruclips.net/video/SBX39qye13c/видео.html
      But I do prefer pistol grip and even thumbgrip with short grip length. For me, it increases the weapon control and feeling if the pommel lays in the palm of my hand, as shown in the video.
      If this is what you meant?

    I'm guessing you have seen Roland Warzecha's round shield combat stuff. Where do you find you agree / disagree with him?

      I think Roland has done some invaluable research and has implemented great principles to flat shield combat. In general I think his approaches to binding are correct and I also use his way of griping the sword.
      However, I am not a big fan of his recent footwork and I myself have a hard time to make the binding work against uncooperative rushing opponents. I also prefer training/sparring with protection, although I use slow sparring for practice. But of course Roland is much more experienced than I am, so maybe I am lacking insights and practice he already has.

    Is there a cooldown on the shield strike or can you spam the animation?

    • @alexandermartzok_vikingcombat
      @alexandermartzok_vikingcombat  3 года назад +3

      I would say you can spam it as much your arm strength/endurance allows, no cool down but probably your stamina will be depleted quite fast. And from my experience spamming is seldom an effective tactic.

    Years ago, a video floated around RUclips from Poland showing similar strikes and guards. Were you also inspired by the Tower Fechtbuch for your interpretation?en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Royal_Armouries_Ms._I.33

      I would be really interested in that video!
      Although I studied extensivley I.33 for sword and buckler, I would argue it is not really suitable to take information about basic techniques out of it. Its quite advanced with complex content.
      However, I was heavily inspired by Andre Lignitzer's six pieces on sword and buckler. Not all attack combination work with a large shield but he teaches some important principles!

    Damn it. No one ever presents anything in depth about viking UNARMED combat. A few in Norway claim to teach it but demand that you must travel to fucking Norway and if that is too inconvenient then you're shit out of luck.
