we built a shed dead flat and regret not putting a slope on it, definitely put a slight slope on it for washing out or if a cow destroys a water trough it will drain out without needing to put a lot of effort into getting the water out.
We have a 30000L rainwater harvesting tank for our sheep, we live in a wet part of Scotland but it has run dry a couple of times when it's been a dry spring so if I were you I'd go for a bigger tank for cows or have a backup mains for if it does run out. On the water trough side of things would highly recommend jfc's frost proof troughs, have had them in -18 and they never froze over
Put everything on a slope and a good slope in case the floor settles in anyway and you end up with a puddle. washing out will be so much faster and easier along with keeping straw dryer. Also, put extra creep pens in for calves so they always have use of one. Somewhere warm, dry and away from big beasts. You’ll Thank yourself.
Oh and I saw a shed in Ireland that had these very transparent roof sheets. Look light green on the outside but was like you were outside on the inside. Just looked a nice place to be.
Above the five sheeted gates, on your sheds South side. I'd seriously consider, Galebreaker type, roller blinds. Rather than double height, sheeted door's. Which are a nightmare, even in a moderate breeze. Blinds will not block as much light out either, an still allow, good airflow. Just another thing to think about ! Compare the price, between installing blinds or fully sheeted door's. That might determine your decision.
Hi Crawford there's a sheeting company in Northern Ireland Greenhill Systems they are main distributors for heatgurd polycarbonate its a clear sheet so its like daylight inside . A lot of dairy farmers are using it
Really interesting video Crawford. As others have said, Galebreaker blinds might be an option, even when closed you will still get some ventilation. Don’t listen to me I have no experience of them, I have just seen them on other farm buildings!!
My preferences for water would be : Harvesting rain from roof and storing it. Might get some sort of credit for that in the future. Bore hole. Possible extraction costs / licencing. I had a new water main mole ploughed in a few years ago to replace a leaking asbestos line. Took two days to do and at reasonable cost, about half mile in length. Put the shed on a slight slope, 1 in 200 ?
Double the roof lights on the side which does get sunlight if there is one this gives the barn equal light throughout Double the roof lights on the side which does get sunlight if there is one this gives the barn equal light throughout. You could do with a visit from Stuart from eternit
Have you any old maps, probably will be a well somewhere around the yard or close fields from pre mains water days. Could save you a fortune if you find it and it's okay. We have been using our old well for 23 years now and no issues at all
Open ridge ventilation?? Simple bale spike is weld collars on side of your head stock can carry spikes with you and big spanner then always have spikes with you wherever you are
Have you run the gates past The Gate Lady for her approval? Especially if there is any possibility of her opening them? Loved your crazy cement mixing scheme. 🤡 But it worked.
Will you have an open ridge or every second sheet open? Are you able to get a grant for a shed like this? Looks exciting, will be great to follow your progress as you go! Will also give ideas for other farmers thinking of building new cattle sheds.
Would roller doors be an option instead of big sheeted doors, big sheeted swinging doors will be very dangerous in windy conditions to open. I have also seen roller curtains to keep wind or rain out...
I’d look at the green hill systems heatgaurd roof we have installed one and have many more planned also would roller shutter doors be more practical and safer in the wind than double height sheeted gates? Can always have internal normal gate to stop the cattle damaging it. Happy to have a chat about the roof sheets keep the videos coming! Callum
@@CrawfordsFarm1 been on farms in Holland for 30 years it has a guarantee but can’t remember how long for off the top of my head. It has aluminium particles in it that reflect the heat to reduce the heat inside the building.
Since public sector flu the levels of customer services from govt, council's,banks, and big business have deteriorated to appalling levels, shop small, shop local.
Crawford, regarding the new shed planning, have you given much thought to future expansion possibilities? Will the new shed be able to be expanded in the future fairly easy?
Do beef cattle have minimum light needs? Tom Pemeberton vids showed an interesting design factor that changed north facing skylights to be much larger/numerous than south ones, to even out daylight.
Regarding “bulls” wouldn’t it be more cost effective to go down the A.I. Route to save replacing bulls and free up space by not the need for bulk pens ?
Great video. Rather than demolish all the old sheds, why not biuld on green field nearby then put in for planning for a Steading conversion to houses as it is brownfield, Then sell to a developer. Free shed and cash to spare. 😆 🤣 I know proper farmers like yourselves hate eating into fields but by demolishing those biuldings you could be missing out on a huge opportunity.
the screeders around Perth are kaking themselves 😂😂

Great video Crawford it looks like it going to be some cattle shed 👌👌
You don't muck around Crawford. Well done. Thanks for sharing.
Cheers

Great looking plan 👌

Great video Crawford very nice as always
Look into the Galebreaker curtain system to keep the wind out

Did look into that a bit, need to look again
Definitely slopes the floors on the shed especially if your going to wash it out every year. Mines level and it a pain

Great to see plans for the shed coming on. 👍
Pic three in your thumbnail is the best option
Consider a big door will be a big sail in strong winds. They will not take any prisoners with machinery animals or people.
Could you put on a single sheeted gate with a galebreaker on the south side, far safer than a big wind catching gate
Hopefully a new shed if all goes through ok

Roof facing east south 👍🏼
The roller wind breaks work well ande easy enough to get on and out
Great video Crawford the shed will be some job when it’s done
You could use a galebraker to stop the wind tee get on well with them
A calf lie back area in the corner of each pin . 2 gates extra for a pin is all it would take per pin.
Have you any old maps, probably will be a well somewhere around the yard or close fields from pre mains water days. Could save you a fortune if you find it and it's okay. We have been using our old well for 23 years now and no issues at all
Gale breakers above the doors
Thats a fair coo shed your going to have. Cement mixing was going good until we saw the socks😂
🤣

WE HAVE NEW FATTERING SHEDS (PIGS) WITH WINED UP AND DROP CURTAIN ON DOOR WAYS. ONE END WERE THE WIND IS AND FULL LENGTH SIDE CURTAINS
Have you run the gates past The Gate Lady for her approval? Especially if there is any possibility of her opening them?
Loved your crazy cement mixing scheme. 🤡 But it worked.
🤣🤣
Do you need to build a midden outside the new shed for the manure or do you just tip it in the field 🤔
sliding doors might be better with inside gates so you can open doors for ventilation

Get a water diviner to come and pace your farm/fields, they rarely don't find a hidden water source. 👍

How is it affected by uv? Does it not go brittle

Yes know where we would build next if we ever were too
Would you have the option of a borehole into the aquifer?
Possibly, going to look into it
You will regret knocking down them sheds. You have plenty room to slap a new shed on fresh ground.
Do beef cattle have minimum light needs? Tom Pemeberton vids showed an interesting design factor that changed north facing skylights to be much larger/numerous than south ones, to even out daylight.
I forgot to mention, easy drain water troughs too? What a joy vs old stylee ones fixed to floor.

How longs planning going to take? Our local authority are taking an age at the moment!
Cattle shirts! Lol
Recycle / reuse all that slate and stone? Must be builders who do renivation work needing it ?
Great video.
