I reside in America and I also have understood this concept at very young age but unfortunately I had to work at age of 50 and feel wasted my life for gaining nothing out of it. i got Govt. job of junior Engineer civil at the age of 22 and got selected by commission in big department also. But not doing justice with my role as Engineer I left job t after 20 year. Doing some innovative work give me more pleasure.
I've heard the same advice from people like Naval ravikant. People in the ancient ages were self sufficient for thousands of years. This model of current urban society came after the industrial revolution. They were saying in the future people will become more self sufficient and the current model of society will flip itself back to the old ways. If I'm not wrong then I think you're hinting at the same idea

Promotion is secondary, actually one should keep on learning new things, and contribute more and more, to society, if a person is in R&D, his/ her job itself is to take up new challenges whether he/ she is promoted or not.
