I am confused. I thought you could not mix chlorine with bromine. You are using shock with chlorine and a bromine floater

You can mix Bromine sanitizer Tablets with granular chlorine shock. You don’t mix bromine granular sanitizer with granular chlorine shock.

Good video. I currently use chlorine but considering switching to Bromine. Which gives you clearer cleaner water?

Hello Jeff. Great videos! Non related question, but should you occasionally leave the cover off to air out if you haven’t used it in a while? Or does it not make a difference at all to leave it covered for an extended period. Thank you! Keep up the great videos.

My 1900 gallon swim spa has a UV/Ozonator system to purify the water. Since that does the same thing as shock (adding oxygen to the water), is shock even necessary? My water stays clear and bromine levels are stable (using only tabs in a dispenser). If I do add (non-chlorine) shock in any significant amount, the bromine levels shoot up really high and take quite a while to come back down to an acceptable level. The only answer I have ever found says that 'with an ozonator, you don't need to add shock as often'. No mention of how often or how much. Can you help?

I have a inflatable hot tub by 6 person tub, it's about 290 gallons. I been confused on how much shock to use, because the dishlor I got only speaks about 500 gallons on the label. Is it safe to use the same amount for 290 as the 500?

Great video but you dont want to shock when unnecessary! Every time you add chlorine, you are adding stabilizer (Cyanuric Acid) which in high amounts hinders the effectiveness of your sanitizer. You are also adding to your TDS (total dissolved solids) You really should be shocking with chlorine (Dichlor) when your total combine chlorine is higher than your free chlorine which means you have a high level of chloramines. Chloramines are chlorine molecules that are attached to contaminants. Chlorine lock occurs when all your chlorine is tied up and not ssnitizing. You ll get a 0 free chlorine reading even though you keep adding chlorine. You ll also notice a strong smell. To shock properly, you must add enough chlorine to get the level up to 10ppm so "breakpoint" is achieved. Breakpoint is when the chlorine and the contaminants seperate (break away) from the chlorine and dissipate into the air. The chlorine is then free to sanitize agsin. How many times you shock also depends on type of sanitation you use. I have a HotSpring salt system and also add a silver ion mineral stick. It's Feb now and I only shocked with dichlor once since msy last water change in August. Water is pristine. I did use nonchlorine (MPS) 2-3 times.and hit the boost button on my salt system a couple of times as well. In the summer, I add MPS more often, generally after pool parties or every 2-3 weeks. I also shock with dichlor a bit more often because the tub gets used more, but I generally do so only when needed. Salt systems generate pure chlorine with no adding harsh chemicals. That's why the water can last up to a year. You dont want to add too much cyanuric acid and total dissolids if you dont want to change your water every -3-4 months. Keeping phosphates low is critical when you have a salt system.

Cal hypo granular chlorine and sodium hypochlorite liquid chloride do not have stabilizer (cya) in them.

Great great videos Jeff your like an encyclopedia of hut tub knowledge. My hot tub manual says not to use a floater, is that true or can i use one ?

why don't you just add the amount recommended on the label instead of just winging it with a chlorine based shock. do you just add this same amount for a 200 gallon hot tub? 800 gallon hot tub? all the same to you? exactly. follow the label people.

Great video. Any thoughts on using both types of shock. Our bull frog uses Frog @ ease and chlorine levels are super low by design. Their strip measures good but doesn't even register on a standard strip (1 -3 PPM). They say to use non-chlorine shock only. I want to use chlorine shock occasionally because of those low levels.

Solid question…..bought a new jacuzzi and I’m in the same boat at you right now ….🤷🤷🤷 chlorine low …not even visible on normal strips ….at a loss ….I might ditch the frog thing ….they’re CRAZY money anyway

    • @GreenMountain565
      @GreenMountain565 4 месяца назад

With the Frog System you don’t want to use granulated chlorine as this will raise your CYA levels and make your frog system unable to sanitize. You can add pool chlorine as this does not contain CYA

I just bought a hot tub with the EcoPure charge filters and the manufacturer says that Bromine is not recommended due to the minerals (copper and zinc) in the EcoPure filters. The manufacturer says these mineral filters are supposed to "reduce" the amount of sanitizer needed. How accurate is that statement?? I've also been using hot tub shock after every use, sometimes five times a week and the chlorine levels are showing zero on the test strips. Should I get a chlorine floater instead? And we've also had an outbreak of hot tub rash. So I'm guessing the mineral filters aren't really all they're cracked up to be? Long story short, I've only had the tub a month and I've already done a water change. Another question, what's the point in non-chlorine oxidizer if it doesn't kill anything?? What does it do, exactly? Thanks for the video.

Hi want to say i like your chanel and watched all videos :)
I did like you and started with chlorine and are now using bromine wit chlorine shock
nr.1 I always use measuring tool ml cups 5-10-20-50-100mg. makes it very easy to know what your spa needs
i rise the ph and alkalinity and hardness
Nr.2 i always remove the bromine before i shock with chlorine ( dont know if i have too)?
Nr.3 I have river water and its a little brown. I shock the new water and its clears right up (need too clean filter)
Thanks again for a great video :) 😀

Pretty slick video but it left the most important questions unanswered:
    1. What is that “good” target level” for chlorine you keep referring to immediately after shocking the spa?
    2. What is that “safe level” for chlorine you keep referring to when it is okay to again enter the spa after it is shocked
Including this critical information would have made this truly useful

Hi there, i use a product called spa 56 from leisure time and it states that it can be used as a shock treatment and also a sanitizer. Have you heard of this product and does that make sense that it can be used for both? Thanks for your input.

It's great to see you making videos again, Jeff. Always enjoy the great easy to understand information you share with all of us! I have a 2012 Limelight Pulse that was gifted to me, so it uses the old ACE salt water system. I had to replace the salt cell with a more generic cell (similar to the one someone would us as an add-on). It would be great to share some of your recs on taking care of a salt cell system (I'm sure most of it is the same). Thanks again and keep 'em coming!!

Look at the bottle. If it’s chlorine it should be dichlorine (dichlor) sanitizer. Or it will say Bromine.
