Love this game! We just started playing this about 3-4 months ago. It's SOOOOO Much fun!!! I didn't know about a city breaking a road path and cancelling the longest road. That's interesting. I'll have to remember that next time we play it.
As a person who has never played Catan, this video fails to mention why roads are important at all. My first thought was "why do i need to build roads? are they just for the longest road victory points?". In the build phase this guide fails to mention that you can only build settlements where your roads reach.
@@gerking195 no its not common sense there are plenty of games which have similar mechanics but they are used differently. For example in civilization V, you can build cities wherever, roads only grant you bonus gold upon connecting cities.
@@jasont4400 Hudini901 brought up a really good point and its constructed in a non-aggressive manner. Not sure why you gotta make things personal when its a perfectly legitimate concern.
This is well done. You may want to add that there has to be at least 2 road segments between builds. So if a settlement is in an intersection, you can't build within 2 road segments of that settlement.
its been many years since ive played this game and I just bought it to play with my 7 and 8 year old son. After reading the provided rules twice, I was still confused. This video helped a ton!
There’s no way... I just ordered this an hour ago, and was thinking of looking up a video to show my family, and right as I got on, your notification popped up!
This was a good supplement to the rulebook which helped speed up my learning. Got it for Christmas and the rulebook was simple enough, but I wanted to confirm with a video, which this has done. Many thanks!
I am playing this game with my D&D group next week and I have never heard of this game but it sounds and looks like a lot of fun. Thank you for making this video.
At 8:23 , when random tokens are kept , 2 RED are adjacent to each other. As per rule book, we should make sure that no two Reds are adjacent to each other. Hope you make that correction in the video.
I don't recommend random tokens (even with no 2 adjacent REDs) It can create quite the unfair game. keeping the correct order really help to spread players over the board and not having rally bad areas.
@@thijsbaarda I didn't know about putting them in alphabetical order lol. Now I wanna play again, cause I always thought the game felt unfair when randomly placed.
I’m trying to find some support in the rules pertaining to collecting the resources from the second settlement placed during the setup. Is this an official rule?
@kingkongdong7042 Yes it does... it outlines each turn phase, the order of turns, what is possible through each phase, and what each action is for. Watch it again.

**BE CAREFUL** Great video but PLEASE read the paper instructions in their entirety. I don't know if this is just an old video and the new sets of Catan have been updated but this video omits a LOT of information. We didn't know until we played with a more seasoned player and were told that we're playing CRITICAL aspects of the game completely wrong. No hate, just want people to avoid the same mistakes we made.
great tutorial. by the way I think the robber has no effect on cards less than 8. Rule say "if you have more than 7 cards" and even specifies it means equals 8 or more. However if you get robbed when you have 7, it will make the game level harder and requires even more stronger hand and risk management.
Very well done. I also question the phrasing of the number of cards that need to be discarded when the robber is activated. The rules state "more than 7" and "(ie, 8 or more) in the 5th ed. It would also have been nice to talk about the Distance Rule when doing the game setup. Again, great job, and the students at my school really benefited from this video. Nice work!
@@saritagundeti305 oh like you need to have 2 roads away from your building and your opponents buildings to build another at 5:49 you can see that orange and white have a settlement adjacent to the 6 on the left they are close to each other which is not allowed
'The Catan Dice Game' is very entertaining as well. You can also play single player which is a top 5 dice, card, or board/tabletop single player game for me. I'd like to know what you think about it.
I'm about 99% sure the answer is yes but it's a lousy place to put one of your first two settlements, since it's only next to 1 or 2 hexes, as opposed to 3 most places.
Thanks so much for this excellent video - really well explained and clear for a newbie. Playing it for the first time tomorrow, now I’m confident I’ll know what I’m doing!
I have a second hand set that seems to have everything but the harbor tokens which were mentioned after explaining everything without explaining their purpose. Do I need them or not? What are they for?
Can’t seem to find a definitive answer. I understand that when someone initially steals the longest road they get those two points plus an additional two for victory points. What happens when someone steals the longest road from the second person that originally stole it? Does the second person keep their two victory points or do they lose all four?
When player 1 builds 5 consecutive roads, they receive the longest road card (2 victory points). However, if player 2 builds 6 consecutive roads, then player 2 takes the longest road card (2 victory points) from player 1. The longest road and largest army cards are not permanent victory points. Whoever holds the cards has those victory points, until someone builds more roads or plays more knight cards than them. Hopefully this clarifies!
As I was truly enjoying your lesson I noticed something, the pieces had moved. They were in different spots. I had been hoping to see a continuous game. But thank you for clarifying second placement.
Oh god this is sooo helpful!! you're definitely a life saver🥲✨ I wasn't able to understand how to play this game even after reading the rules out, thankfully I watched your video😁 Tysm!!💜
