iv got every Alan Watts recording i could get ahold of... and still every time i hear it, i grab a new perspective from it. Thanks for sharing this video! =D
He's not saying that we literally create the universe. But by being this organism, we evoke this particular experience of the universe: Light, sound, smell, taste and touch. All of which cannot be explained in words but just experienced as they are. Different organisms process the multitude of vibrations of the universe in a staggering number of ways. We have this experience, a tarantula will have a different one altogether.
However many years later, and he is absolutely right at the 2:00 minute mark. Your eye ACTUALLY emits photons out of it in order to apparently pick up that lights reflection of the object which in turns enables the sense of Sight to function.
"A human being is part of the whole called by us universe, a part limited in time and space. We experience ourselves, our thoughts and feelings as something separate from the rest. A kind of optical delusion of consciousness. This delusion is a kind of prison for us, restricting us to our personal desires and to affection for a few persons nearest to us. Our task must be to free ourselves from the prison by widening our circle of compassion to embrace all living creatures..." --Albert Einstein
No, he means just the opposite. He means that which we really are. You and I are the whole energy of the Universe experiencing itself in these little momentary vortexes of complex matter. IT. Hope you're having a fun adventure over there! :)
Clapping your hands is the cosmos. Drinking coffee is the cosmos. Snorting coke is the cosmos. Slapping your sibling is the cosmos. It is all the same shit.
Of course it's difficult otherwise we wouldn't experience so much suffering since millions of years, but is there anything else do to than to try to practice ?
@soulmate119nickmel He is implying that sight as an experience is only the way our consciousness deals with a phenomena, that otherwise existed irrespectively of us. That is, photons always went about their business but they became 'light' when an organism evolved an ability to utilize them and render them to the conscious.
It is as easy as being what you naturally are, our societies and cultures just make it hard for many to make that move psychologically. Many have cracked when they realized that the world that man laid over the earth is the fallacy.
@99francesco how is that shocking? It's anything but. He's said that it is better to live a short life full of pleasure is more valuable than a long life without pleasure.
>> Some people will use a symbolism of the relationship of #God to the #universe , wherein God is a brilliant light, only somehow veiled, hiding underneath all these forms as you look around you. So far so good. But the truth is funnier than that. It is that you are looking right at the brilliant light now, that the experience you are having that you call ordinary everyday consciousness--pretending you're not it--that experience is exactly the same thing as "IT". There's no difference at all. And when you find that out, you laugh yourself silly. That's the great #discovery . [...] The source of all light is in the Eye!
He used to call himself the (a) Rascal Guru. There is a certain honesty in this. He was most certainly one of the great commentators of the 20th Century in the field of spirituality. He liked a drink and a smoke and didn't hide the fact. he wasn't a hypocrite. He just told it as he understood it. Pretty good for a self-made man
So life is pain, in essence...suffering owing to desire, if could stop desiring, stop suffering...now I want to (desire to ) stop desiring, the man says, and Budda says why would you want to do that...desire already is....so, my point, again...the suffering or what have you, is part of IT, to Alan (though he does not say it), and don't try to end that, i.,e. get a leg up on the universe, so, go with the flow...but by the same token, hell, just bang that chick then, married or not, you desire to?
Timothy2239 Tim - Excuse me ? I understand the English language very well ... and he said this! Where was he going with this statement? As I said "This is absurd!"
Oh, I'm not trying to question how well you know the English language. But, that you have failed to see what point Alan Watts gave. What he does give you are examples that you *Invoke* light out of the universe. This doesn't mean you create or emit light in anyway.
All he is saying is that without our vision, light would not exist. He is right. Light is simply a subjective interpretation of sense to see. You form images in the back of your brain yet no light actually reachers there, it is all simply electromagnetic signals made into subjective and recognizable patterns.
I disagree if all living creatures on earth and earth were to be destroyed the universe would still be here. Humans are a creation of this universe not the opposite; the universe a creation of humans. The true question is what humans will do with this awareness. Was this earth made for humans or humans for the earth?
Alan's voice is always soothing to me.

Can you please share a link with your collection?
Timeless.. that's why 😉
May the long time sunshine, surround you, and the true light within you guide your way on.
You're the universe, go with the flow and enjoy it. Fight it and you're fighting with yourself. Life's a huge cosmic joke, the best one never told.

:D Nice one thnks for this comment :)
It's perfectly fine to spend your life fighting with yourself and others, as long as you find it fun :p

I can't get enough of this man.
These 6 minutes and 10 seconds are just mind-blowing. The speeches of Alan Watts fail to disappoint me
waste? is there even such a thing as waste? as immortal as we are, we have infinite time to spend learning and experiencing
Thx! ...another artfully done lecture by the profound Alan Watts ...it's a beautiful message.
Thank you for doing this video! Excellent audio and marvelous images.
However many years later, and he is absolutely right at the 2:00 minute mark. Your eye ACTUALLY emits photons out of it in order to apparently pick up that lights reflection of the object which in turns enables the sense of Sight to function.
In seeking a being of perfection we forget the perfection of being.
I have heard parts of this before but not all that you put here. Thank you!
Yes, Alan, I’m begining to see.
What song is used in the background?
Sons of Scotland by James Horner (Braveheart)
"The lesson is: never try" - Homer Simpson
Never would've thought that would actually be good advice
Actually it's written on Charles Bukowski grave. Probably it was reference on him
wow. the body truly is the temple
FANTASTIC VIDEO!! Great job :-)
THANK YOU
Amazing stuff
Thanks
the addition of music behind these lectures is a funny thing
the point isn't to be the master but to go with it
i just got back from an adventure, and now we're listening to music.
Wow this is brilliant!
Is there a version of this with out music?
this is the best.
you suffer because you desire... so Im now desiring not to desire.... profound knowledge

Energy + Light + Power + Force + Life + Development + Progress + Unity + Awareness.

The song "The Great Discovery" by "The Movement" led me here.
I'm here because of Cynic (I have thought of writing something like this on RUclips for ages, now I finally do it)
thanks Jens Finkhäuser :-)

Giampaolo Mannucci sentito questo? sto vedendo il video di Ted x che hai commentato te, mi piacerebbe sapere che ne pensi pure di questo :)

Most profound
Resonates alot with irish mythology
😂😂the braveheart music and then the eye of sauron or something that is funny to me lol
Clapping your hands is the cosmos. Drinking coffee is the cosmos. Snorting coke is the cosmos. Slapping your sibling is the cosmos. It is all the same shit.
I just now realized Watts kinda sounds like stewie griffin lol
Always IRie clouds driven by the force of wind
Not quite sure what you're implying
Always IRie haha, I just realized that too in another video and searched "alan watts stewie" in google to see who else thought that
Brilliant:--)
only difficult if you decide it is
haha is that clip at the begining from Crysis?
lmao at Braveheart music... absolutely perfect mood but the association was ironic
Of course it's difficult otherwise we wouldn't experience so much suffering since millions of years, but is there anything else do to than to try to practice ?
Does anyone know what lecture this is from?
Good clip but music is distracting. It does not match.

Little bit of petitio principii there when defining "living."
Just found out he died at 58 of a heart condition and that he was an alcoholic. Shocked
+Brandon Adams At least he could have over dosed on LSD or MDMA.
+Patrick Dowden Good call 1 year later moron. Go cry to your mum 12 year old
Patrick Dowden people without an ego don't laugh at anyone.

Theoretically not difficult, Practically.. very difficult which is why we Bow to Buddha

Nick :
On what planet do eyes emit photons ?? This is absolutely absurd !
I don't think you understand where Alan Watts was going with this.
