There has been an accident and my bird is now in surgery. I want to share with you the full story of what has happened to my Ringneck, Blu... or should I say, what I suspect happened. Although this is not the most happy, perfect story, I think it is important to share what is happening as it may help you make certain decision or take more specific precautions with your birds.
I'm here to share my life with my bird family with you. My goal has always been to create a channel you can learn from, whether that is out a great situation or a bad one. Today is an unfortunate situation but I think there is a lot to take away from this story.

I volunteer at a parrot rescue/sanctuary and I feel like this scary situation is important for ALL sanctuary workers and volunteers to be aware of. It’s like you where talking about, birds have their own flock dynamics and we humans need to be careful as to observe and supervise those funky dynamics. I don’t think many people would have noticed the hyper-protectiveness of Blu, or Merlins pecking order, you are a really amazing caregiver to your flock!!
when u spend a lot of time with the birds, u get to know the subtle body language and changes of sounds they make. Ive had birds for over 40 years and y bird still had accident, I am moritfied. I thought he was safe where I had him coz he couldn't fly, but its like he doesn't know he can't fly n did jump like they do when they are launching into the air, n fell. I will forever feel bad about this mistake. he now has seizures. M was right, if u think there is ANY possibility of something adverse happening. plan for it.

Love Leo. He's a perfect Amazon. Amazon's are such a challenge and he's a terrible example.
Thank God for Blu being Brando’s bodyguard, so sweet. Everyone who has a single beloved bird even knows accidents can happen. When you have a bird, you have to keep that extra eye and ear open. Have a Birdy first aid kit at the ready, and consider mothering them as if they were a curious toddler. Praying your baby gets well soon!
problem is it can be misguided and lead to trouble, well i guess it did already.
When Marlene said she worried that Blue thought he was abandoned again, i did tear up. Marlene has done such amazing work with Blue.

Hope that Blue heals well, it sounds like you genuinely tried so hard to listen to the social dynamics of your flock. The fact of having such intelligent birds is that they're opportunistic and accidents happen. Hope that this doesnt affect Blue mentally too much. ❤

I’m glad that Blu is ok and that he protected Brando from getting hurt most likely from Merlin. Blu is going to maybe have to stop giving head scratches to Leo, so his beak can heal. Nice sneak peak of the next episode.
I have a bird that's missing alot of her upper beak. She had an accident and it broke off at the growth plate. It was a Holiday weekend no vet anywhere that was open. I live in the middle of nowhere, in a round about way I got a hold of a guy that took care of raptors to see if he had a vet. His vet wasn't available but was able to give me some advice. I had a few very tense day of making sure my bird was comfortable and didn't get an infection. Finally got to my vet. There was nothing to be done to fix the beak but she was out of the woods as far as other complications. Watching that bird learn and adapt to a stunted beak was amazing. She had to eat pureed food for several months until she threw an absolute fit. We slowly introduced her back to solids and she found ways to make it work. She even figured out how the maintain her lower beak by herself so that I don't have to trim it as much (no upper means lower can grow alot) . Several years down the road she's a tiny force of nature that handles herself well. Very happy and independent. She's even releared how to open a peanut. Birds are so amazing and adaptive.

Thank you for being so open about this with us. Bird ownership has its ups and downs but many videos online don’t show the down moments. It just goes to show how dedicated you are to your flock, feathered and online, and that these moments can happen regardless of how much prevention is in place. I hope Blu makes a speedy recovery - he has the best family taking care of him.
And a big hooray for your emotional support bird (Leo?). That role is one of the most important in a family like yours, so you, Marlene, can be well and be the best bird carer. It is heartwarming to see how much your birds love you, and how much you love them. I hope you all recover and keep safe and well.
I have to learn instantly how to help a tiny parakeet with a prolapsed cloaca and egg. I live in Santa Barbara and there is only one bird vet within about 40 miles. I tried to stay calm do do what made sense to me. Long story short, I was able to gently clear the egg nut then it took 2 weeks to find a vet to help her with the prolapsed cloaca. She finally had her surgery and is doing great 😊 I’ve leaned SO SO much from your channel, thank you so much.
Blu the little hero probably saved Brando's life. I hope he heals well. And I think its hard on you and George because I can tell that you love all them so much.

I'm so glad Blue is home with you, and recovering from his surgery. I under stand your situation - my Goffin is a bully-bird and has attacked my daughter's Gallah, and my cockatiel. My cockatiel was bitten on the beak by him and was taken right to the vet. She recovered well, no surgery, but has an indentation in her beak near the nare. 🙏 for Blue.

So happy that Blu will be okay. I know with our little Jasmine, we try to watch her constantly. She is the only bird in the home for now and as she has become more comfortable with her home in the past year, she has really gotten to be far more curious. We immediately "baby proofed" the home when we notice that she would actually leave the area of her room. It is tempting to let her explore freely around the home, but we have also known that accidents can happen.

I cant love this suggestion enough we drive our bird 30 minutes to see an Avian vet and she is one of 3 Avian vets in our whole half of the state. Thank goodness Blu will be ok im so glad

So proud of you, Blu! You saw something was up and you stood your ground to protect your BFF and your flock members! And yeah, bird attacks are like the worst sort of prison cat fight; by design there should be one winner and one corpse. Sorry to hear about your bird. I hope the surgery is successful and that his beak fully heals! I keep telling my teenage daughter that she should think about becoming an avian vet, because we need more of them!

the fact that Blue, being a bodyguard mainly for Brando, cause he knew that Merlin was a threat to her, hats off to Blue for being Brando's protector and going into battle to save his bestie, and suffered such an injury in the process ... glad the surgery went well for hero Blue and hope the situation with Merlin can get better and easier for you guys... sucks that Merlin has turned on Brando..

Please don’t consider re-homing Merlin, I know you didn’t say anything about that, but I am just worried for him. You said maybe an area just for him might be best and I bet that it will be. Maybe he has some trauma from a past household and you know how smart African Greys are, they remember. We can’t judge Merlin harshly because we don’t know what kind of horrors he has had to endure. He may just be trying to protect his place in the house that he loves. Love to you and your whole family and flock.

That’s horrible. Wish for a speedy recovery. Accidents happen. At least you know yo( did everything you could and where aware of the dynamics. So many people don’t understand those things so it could have been prevented.
I know in your case you took every precaution possible. You’re one of the best bird moms out there!!

It’s so important for RUclipsrs to tell the absolute truth about their animals. I’m reminded of the time Mikey the Macaw became injured while free flying. A pretty scary story but a good lesson there, and happily he made a good recovery. You’re brave to share this and I hope everyone involved is soon restored to equilibrium. Poor handsome Blue. Being sensitive to flock dynamics is super important! Thank you Marlene for highlighting this subject matter, especially those seemingly very innocent or small interactions between flock members. I’ve worked at a Parrot Sanctuary for several years and am owned by an African Grey. My experiences in both situations reinforce the need for supervision and observation of flock dynamics when you have multiple birds in a dynamic situation. Sometimes it’s not possible to predict future aggressions and sometimes it is. No matter the situation, thank god George was there and identified that Blu had been injured. Marlene is correct, we need more Certified Avian Specialist Vets. Especially ones that are willing to talk to you night or day to access a situation. I know that most vets probably don’t have much time away from their vet practice due to the emergency nature of the business. Just know we are grateful for your advice, care, treatment of our feather babies. None of us ever want to be in the situation of an emergency, thank your vet for their care and commitment! Thank you Marlene!

This same thing happened to my Green Cheeked Conure by my African Grey. The little one started the fight but he ended up being ok in the end and left my Grey alone after that. And that happened while being supervised!
Wow! I really hope Blue will be ok. He loves Brando and sacrificed himself to protect her. That's actually quite of an amazing dynamic. I really hope & pray Blue will recover 100%.

Also too, Marlene, thank you for making a video about this incident, and I love how you have and are being most responsible with what is going on with the birds and being protective and making sure procedures are in place to keep all birds safe. I do hope Merlin will calm down though and be able to mix with the flock again.
This is why it’s not advised to mix beak sizes with psittacines 😬

My African Gray is a little cage territorial and will even approach my macaw when she is on my African Grays cage. I never let them get too close but African Grays can be pretty brave when it comes to other birds.

Hoping for a speedy recovery for Blue!!! Seeing this video just hit home. Here I thought I was being over protective of my birds. My Senegal is the aggressive one and when I have him or another bird out i’m hovering around them. Because I know my Senegal isn’t friendly! I even tell my boyfriend to be careful with him and our other birds but he tells me I worry to much! Now I know I don’t over react Cus anything can happen. Thank you for posting this video! I posted a similar story on parrot station, but it never showed up. An unlatched door pushed just open by the cat or dog and my aggressive Conure male went back into the bird room and attacked my Amazon one too many time, and must have gone for her face because she bit off his beak. Because of COVID, not one vet could see him. I kept calling and got a cancellation. Tiki, the aggressive Conure, was put on pain, antifungal and antibiotic meds. He eats Harrison’s high potency powder and I liquify veggies to make the powder edible. His beak is growing back and he’s full of spirit. The vet is super pleased.

So sorry lil Blu. I wouldn’t be so quick to blame Merlin. I’d watch Brando, she’s very hormonal and territorial. My female Plum head parakeet recently went after my male Plum head and did some damage. Now, she won’t leave him alone since she hurt him. Please don’t let Blu get hurt again, I’m just saying watch Brando. Hormones are horrible!!!! Speedy recovery Blu boy❤️

I am so glad that Blue is doing well. Prayers sent to everyone and I'm so glad you were able to find the best vet for the job. I am so glad that you were able to make this video. I think it is so important for people to understand and realize that just because bird are flighted that there can still be danger. I'm so sorry to hear that this happened. Blue has always been the Brando protector and that was really lucky. I want to thank you though for going into detail and telling everyone what, why, and how this happened, so they can be aware and and keep this from happening in their home. Omg ok sending prayers. What a story. Sending love to you and your flock. ❤️🐦 I heard theres these new 3D printed prosthetic beaks that help during Re growth process & for those who may never eat normally again. And yeah, I don’t care what béhaviorists & avian scientists say, there IS a pecking order. Some birds more so than others. Flock dynamics makes that apparent to any bird mom. They’re social creatures so it makes sense.
Stay strong, & your world wide flock loves you all & is praying the surgery goes well. Update us when you can. We’ve been doing a lot of “family time” where we discuss with the birds about safety and what’s not ok to do & how during family time we treat everyone with respect. I reinforce that all of the time and it seems to work well for us, going over rules and expectations before play time and such. And don’t forget you’re a good bird mom. Things like that can make you question your skills so don’t let it get to you. Y’all are so good with birds and sometimes things occur you don’t expect or did everything to prevent. Give Blu scritches for us.

I live in Connecticut and Dr.Anne Bourke is the only avian vet over here in Connecticut. And Squirt (yellow sides green cheek conure) and I love her tremendously.

Even for a bird it is a complicated world. I'm really concerned and hope the best for Blue. He seems to be such a cool little bird, and should get a metal hung in his cage denoting that along with some sort of party for him making him feel special.
