Lots of ppl don't know Shannon Hoon "Blind Melon" was also from here in Lafayette,Indiana where Axl and Izzy also from here....Hoons sister was friends with Axl apparently in school so Axl leaves here in Dec 1982 for Los Angeles to follow his Izzy who had already left Lafayette for L.A. to try to make it in music...sometime around 90 Hoon in ttrouble here in Lafayette alot!! Decides to get outta here and he also goes to L.A. keep in mind he goes on his own and not to meet with Axl they was not friends really here just Hoons sister they was few yrs older than him so I think the way it went was he seen him hanging out with his sister few times at their house and knew him that way....so he goes to LA. and Hoon being in trouble all the time here his sister thought he would be in L.A. so she gets ahold of Axl who by now was already the biggest rock star in the world they was recording the Use Your Illusion albums by now and she told Axl to please look out for her little bro who was out there in LA also so Axl invites him over and learns fast that he has some pipes and can sing his ass off...so excellent gesture Axl has him duet a few songs on the new albums including Dont cry of course...Hoon had already started Blind Melon also but had not hit the bigs yet because it came after "No Rain" become huge I will say it was a demon they never could shake it was ironic in a way they was only band I knew of to ever get a major record deal without ever playing one live show!! Blind Melon had a 4 song demo tape and was heard by several companies before Capitol signed them and stuck them out on a nonstop yr and half tour....with huge name bands like Gn'R of course and many others...then No Rain is released and at first didnt do shit then the video was made and MTV played it around the clock and it became huge then Melon had now become a 1 hit wonder band they never could shake it off everyone knew them as the band with the song and the video of the bee girl and never took their other music serious and after recording their second album in New Orleans and Shannon Hoon struggling with drugs and having his 1st baby born in July 1995 he went to rehab gets out and reluctantly goes back out on tour to promote the new album SOUP recorded in New Orleans earlier the tour is fine and he even has his gf and baby with him for few shows they reach Los Angeles the gf and his baby Nico Blue Hoon flies back home here to Lafayette Shannon was being great fresh out of rehab few months ago had his baby and gf along tour the other guys had their gfs with to so it was a great thing the other guys in the band thought wow Shannon is really staright now with the birth of his daughter and anyway his lady and daughter comes back home Shannon meets up with someone in LA after they left for Indiana and scores some Cocaine hes like yeah the old lady and baby are away now daddy with party a lil bit what can it hurt right? They play Boulder and maybe couple other places and they heading east hit Houston at Numbers club and then drive all night to New Orleans where they recorded their second album and where Shannon Hoon stayed fucked up and admitted the place was evil with the temptations of drugs and booze and had been arrested there several times while recording SOUP they was to play the famous Tipitinas club in the warehouse district of the french quarter Sat October 21,1995 and the night before had played a terrible show in Houston so bad Shannon stayed up all night ranting about it and binging on the cocaine he scored n L.A. in fact thats why the show in Houston was so bad he was high as fuck they said to the point he kept getting the mic into his mouth...they arrive in New Orleans early around 7 AM the sun coming up and they have only hours to rest before the show in Tipitinas the other guys get off the bus and go into their motel rooms to sleep except Hoon he wanders the streets nobody knows really where he went except he was seen across the street reading a newspaper and drinking a smoothie at outside cafe and he had been calling this pshychic 900 number hotline they said who saw himhe comes into the motel room of his calls his gf back here in Indiana and for some unknown reason goes back outside to the tour bus where the road crew sleeps when the band isnt on the bus and around 130 PM the roadie who was in charge of sound finds Shannon on the bus which he said is odd they never sleep on the bus while stopped anyway they supposed to be at their sound check in the club in like an hour and shannon and the other guys had to go make sure the sht was set up right for the show tonight so he asks should he wake Shannon up tell him to go to his room and get ready or no? Because he was grumpy if you woke him apparently and he calls the manager and he says yes just wake him tell him please go inside to the motel room of his and rest for the show tonight;....he sees him he is sleeping in Christopher Thorns bunk its taboo they said NOBODY ever slept in other guys bunk it was off limits so when he sees shannon laying in the bunk on his stomach his feet sticking out the curtain he sort of shakes his foot trying to wake him up he dont respond so he thinks he is messing with him shaking him harder and nothing and then rolls him over only to discover he wasnt faking at all he said he was warm sort of but was half way blue of half his body and his eyes was fixed and milky he scream to call 911 and tries CPR and the EMTS arrive walk in take one look without touching him and says "Your friend is dead" and walks back off the bus....Shannon Hoon was dead at 28 yrs old...leaving his 3 month old baby daughter and his gf of 10yrs behind they was high school sweethearts it left his band and his family sick with grief and broke them both up point is here is that he was and the band i should say Blind Melon has WAYYYYY more to offer than No Rain if you guys never heard them please do yourself a favor and go listen to their music they was fucking incredible musicians and the music ahead of its time and dark and it means something its from the soul it tells the story of Shannon Hoons struggle with addiction he was crying out for help in the lyrics and side note here he was not in bad shape he is shown on video tape he took one everywhere he went he recorded himself relentlesly I mean EVERYTHING almost 24/7 up til the point he leave the motel room in New Orleans only hours before he died he is recording himself while on the phone with his gf in indiana he stops the tape and thats the last time anyone ever sees him alive as he is found dead only hour or 2 later but you can clearly see he dont appaer to be messed up he seems normal as u get so he either goes outsode on the bus does a huge line or something it said he died of cocaine overdose or heart attack brought on as result of cocaine over dose I theorize its why his feet was sticking out the bunk on the bus I think he felt it coming on perhaps? he prolly freaks and tries to lay down and maybe slow his heart rate down? he was ready for sleep tho as he had taken off his clothes and folded them up for when he woke to put on close by so but why did he die in the bunk when he knew it was totally off limits to ever get into another band mates bunk and for damn sure not sleep in it ? I will always believe he felt the attack or was having chest pains and tried to lay down and maybe it pass? They never released a toxicology report or anything other than saying cocaine OD and heart failure so I assume he either died in his sleep and or right before he went to sleep it seems to me you cant sleep on cocaine like that he was just recently out of rehab like i said and hus gf and baby goes home and scored coke in LA only couple days before and it was said by band mates was a huge ball of coke bigger than they ever saw I think his tolerance was down from not using and they also said it was primo columbian flake coke so it was bomb ass shit....and he did a lil to much and popped his heart....a fucking shame to he was a really talented man and I didnt get to know it until yrs later I now live in Lafayette,Indiana long story why I live here now but I am from another state I didnt know all this til few yrs ago either my ex gf asks me one day if i wanted to ride with her to see shannons grave? I was like huh? Who? She said shannon hoon the singer for blind melon is buried out the road here I was like ohhhh shit yeah...I had forgot him I had forgot he was dead also and never gave thought to blind melon other than no rain....I revisited the music after I go to his grave out the road from where i live here its only like 3 miles from me in lil town of Dayton right outside Lafayette....he is in the back of this little country church cemetery and i admit standind at his grave man its surreal as fuck the indiana flat land here and the wind blowing and its quiet out there in the country to see where a guy who at one time had it all singing with biggest band in the world axl rose had his own band and sold 4 million records and had new 3 month old daughter and a gf who loved him....and lost it all in the blink of an eye now he is forever tombed into the lil grave at the lil church he will forever be 28yrs old and stuck in 1995 to me...RIP Shannon Hoon you was one of the greats rather ppl know it or not.
I saw him with Neil young. I myself was messed up on heroin and don’t remember to much. I wish I did. I love Neil young and I really like Shannon. This is a sad story.
