I usually trace my clothing patterns onto tracing paper or butcher paper and then carefully fold the original pattern back up. I put all my pattern pieces (original and traced) into a larger 9x12 envelope for storage, so I don't have to jam them back into the original small pattern envelope. If you need to make adjustments to your paper patterns, then tracing them is even better--you can draw, cut, slash, spread as much as you like and still have the original safe and sound.
