One of the most fun detail about this show are the subtle allusion to Arthurian Mythology. Arta Penn -> Arthur Pendragon. Lance -> Lancelot. Moordryd -> Mordred and probably a few more. The name Beaucephalus is a reference to Bucephalus, the legendary horse of Alexander the Great.

NerdCorps has a sad history of constantly getting the short end of the stick, considering how many of their shows never got followups.
Dragon Booster, Hotwheels (to an extent), and Storm Hawks were very well conceived shows with interesting settings and good storylines that all feel like they were cheated out of a conclusion.
Of them, Dragon Booster hurts the most, because there were a bunch of story threads and seeds that deserved more attention, and the promise of Academy forever being unfulfilled was a big punch to the gut at the time.

The reveal of Mortis being Artha and Lance's missing father blew my little-kid brain when I saw it for the first time. Also, of all the villains, Armeggadon was easily my favorite. He had a fearsome design, his voice was powerful and commanding, and the idea of an ancient warlord returning to lay siege to the modern era is always a fun thing to have in an action series. His arrival in the show was also a nice tie-in to the "Shadow Track" episode. I wish we could have seen more of him. It's a shame the sequel series never happened.

Something I remember about the lore of the show was how the color-coordinated gear for the dragons were indicative of function, with red being about speed and acceleration and white for mobility, etc. And that the color of the dragon itself determined what could be equipped.
The problem I saw that was never addressed is that the gold dragon could equip all colors of gear, as demonstrated in the first episode, to the surprise of the candidates selected to ride him. So then, wouldn't that have given away their secret identity? Since Beau could be equipped with multiple colors, you'd think people who pay attention to the races would take notice and bring attention to that, as if in an interview or something.

It's a shame it never got to live up to its full potential. The combination of futuristic racing and fantastical dragons was a unique enough take to stand out compared to a lot of other shows, and the lore was consistently pushed without being overbearing on the pacing of the story. I honestly think it'd have ended up in a better position long term if they hadn't gone with Disney as their backer though, unless they got insane viewer numbers it was always going to be a factor of toy sales with them, whereas some other groups might have recognized the show's consistent viewer base instead.

    • @ThePreciseClimber
      @ThePreciseClimber Год назад +1

It's unfortunate so many cartoons are forced to rely on toy sales to measure success.
I mean, in Japan they usually tie the success of an anime series to the sales of the source material. Which feels more organic from the consumer's point of view, IMHO. Like the anime? Cool. You may want to consider buying the manga, then. 500 yen a pop.
And, hey - if something goes wrong with the anime, the manga will provide a conclusion regardless. Can't do that with western cartoons. Once a cartoon is dead, it's DEAD.
I did like Dragon Booster as a kid but I had zero interest in the toys. I mean, they weren't going to provide me with more of the story so I didn't care.

I remember it. I tried to find any episode on the internet but everything was so low quality and short.
I still remember the line. "Release the Dragon", The Macks from the dragons, then both the characters shooting it through their hands, the Dangerous flying thing during that one race, etc. Bro i miss this.

Dragon Booster was amazing. I just wish they would finally bring out Dragon Academy like was stated in the final episode of Dragon Booster. Then we would get such a more amazing complete series.

This gave me such whiplash back into my childhood. Your video gave me a feeling I haven't felt in a while when it comes to long lost shows as it reminded of something so deep in my memory banks that it took me a good while to realize if I experiended it myself, or I happened to just see bits and pieces of it around and it managed to locked itself into my brain making me think I experienced it properly. Like some sort of weird pseudo memory. I'm still not fully sure which it is- But I definitely experienced it in some way. I absolutely adore these types of throwbacks so thank you so much for reviving this super hidden unlocked memory

I must say, the concept of draconium mag energy felt really cool to me.
I honestly think they should've made a second season where a real dragon human war actually starts.
I would really like to see all the other boosters as well.

You might also remember another show from the same time which was about a robot boy in a delivery company, in the future, some sort of evil corporation who wanted special tech. I remember it being blue and white neon mostly.

I remember watching this show on Jetex, but since I've never seen anything of it since I was 5, the only thing I have to remember it by was a single burger king toy of the bulky blue and green dragon. Up till now, I didn't even remember what it was called, so thank you so so much for reigniting my childhood!

you know what you should do a video on?
the gerry anderson show lavender castle, bit before the timeline you cover most of the time but it'd fit in well as its one of those extremely niche, extremely well done (for its time) shows that nevertheless, wound up forgotten

i vaugly remember me and my sister having dragon and dragon rider OCs for the series. it came out when we were exploring writing and drawing. i don't remember the names, just that we got those mcdonalds toys and painted them to look like the dragon OCs. i always thought that would have been a huge seller for this kind of show where everyone has their own dragon that is a racecar- get a blank model and paint it or color it with markers and BAM! *your* own racecar dragon!

Oh I remember seeing bits and pieces of this on Canadian broadcast television way back. I used to really like it, when I could catch it. If I remember correctly, I liked the way the dragon characters were clearly characters in their own right, just somewhat alien and silent ones, and the villains often had redeeming qualities or character arcs. More moral grey than usual for a kid's show.
I seem to vaguely remember an episode with the episode antagonists being some weird cultists that had something similar to the dragon mind influence gear used by the main villains to artificially enhance their rider-mount bond, but operating in reverse, with their impressive feats of reflex and coordination (and unnerving fanaticism) deriving from the fact that the humans were acting as telepathically-bonded extensions of the dragons, in the opposite of what was typically considered the 'ideal' of mounted combat in the setting? And the _very_ different way they spoke about the previous war and the one they were preparing for, being associated with a bitter supremacist movement of another, rather legitimately oppressed species attempting to 'come out on top this time'.
I wonder how accurately I remembered that?

Dang Jordan I hardly ever comment on things but I have to here because I was gonna ask about this series. Didn't have cable growing up but still caught a lot of these shows you showcase while visiting friends/family/family's friends or on vacation. And then kid me eventually figured out good ol RUclips had a lot of episodes of these shows. This show blew my little 10-11 year old mind my friend and I were obsessed for a while we would catch it on their TV and also watch it together on youtube and then run around outside rping as dragonboosters. I think it's a really cool concept and I'm honestly surprised a reboot or re-hashing hasn't happened.
