  • Here's a woodturning tip from the workshop.
Scraping is not a sin! Every now and than it is very practical.
In this video, Ronald Kanne (woodturner in the Netherlands) shows when and why it can be useful to scrape the surface of your work. Keep you're old sawblades, don't trow them away just jet!
    About Ronald Kanne
Ronald is a wood turner in the Netherlands. He makes commissioned work and his own free work. And every week turns out to be a little too short to get all the work done... He also runs a webshop for other wood turners. It's called: www.dehoutdraaierij.nl. This webshop is in Dutch, English and German. The website that contains his own work is called www.ronaldkanne.nl
The scraper used initially is a pointy negative rake scraper by the way....

The results also depend on the profile of the tool matched to the edge being scraped. I need to fashion a v shaped scraper with straight sides. Always learn from you, thanks and stay safe. Let’s go Dutch!

Good morning 🌅, Ronald , useful tip, I made a very long boring bar, about 35m in diameter, 1-3mts in length, the bar is from part of a drive shaft from a moulin, I have a lot of tool cutter for my spindle moulder , I ground a flat surface on the bar and drilled and tapered a thread so I could clamp a cutter to it, I might add I don’t need to go to gym anymore, 😂, I suppose this is what you call scraping the bottom of the barrel, Or in your case, the bowl, 😂, stay safe, great work, From France.

In the US, that blade is from a power hacksaw. They're not so common anymore, but still available. They'r good for making knives too, by the way.

I guess I don't understand the advantage of this versus a standard shear scrape with standard scraper. I do like the free handing without the tool rest so that you can make sweeping motions without having to stop to move the rest.

@@boazjoe1 it is what you say, a shear scrape. The dutch part is the difference... it has to do with the price of the "tool"... 😅

Wouldn't it be the same with a card scraper? Yes. I tried it😊

Very interesting. But, for me the ugly marks appear on the inside of the bowl. Is the same technic possible?

Sure you can... make it a round nose and go ahead. Maybe a good idea to make a bit shorter and ahandle on the steel then...
