A unaprecciated album. Simply one of their best.
The best electronics that Nick has ever created can be found in Medazzaland! The most mysterious album. Terribly underrated. Balls and chains - rocks!
Ball and chains...
"Balls and chains" sounds painful
I love this cd. I saw their tour for this cd when they came to Cleveland, it was the day that Michael Hutchence committed suicide. Simon gave an amazing eulogy for his friend then launched into ordinary world. I heard that they cut Michael and so long from this performance out of respect. They did open with Nick on vocals for Medazzaland as he read a copy of the local paper. Midnight Sun's alternate ending is amazing and though I like both versions, the alternate is the best and hey, who doesn't like Duran referencing Wile E Coyote in a song "it's a cartoon coyote eternity before I fall down to you" If Be My Icon is stalkery, then Buck Naked is lock em up and throw away the key with JT doing vocals.
Thank you again for another great rediscovery I look forward to more!
Nick Rhodes mastermind behind Duran Duran!!!! This album is amazing awesome brilliant 👍!!!! I avent seen you for a while!!!! Hope you ok and well!!!! I hope ya voting um every day on the hall of fame 2022!!! You need to do a fantastic brilliant review on Duran Duran to ya fans etc to get um voting!!!! Go for it buddy!!!! We need all support to get the duranies voting everyday!!!! Cheers 😌
The original version of icon was written by John and he sang lead on the original.
He did and I have a link to it in the description below.
"Sinner or Saint" is one of Duran Duran's best songs ever.
"Be My Icon" is the best song on this album IMHO.
And, yes - agree 100% - Duran Duran are at their best when the rock out. Wishing they would do a rock album.
I really like the song dedicated to Michael Hutchense, Simon, Michael and Bono are always been great friends, each one with a bold personality👌
Yep. The Lead Singer's Club. It also included The Edge. When Simon was asked why Edge was in it when he's not a lead singer, Simon replied, "Because he's The Edge." LOL
The song was recorded before Michael was dead.
He did not Wright IT for him!
@@koos72 Yes, Simon did write it for Michael to let him know he would be there for him and he could call him whenever he needed.
I don't know if Michael ever heard it. Unfortunately he most likely didn't since he passed before its release.
I happen to love the quirkier side to Duran Duran. I thought “Undergoing Treatment” was a great tune and keeps with the drug-induced opening of “Medazzaland.”
I am also well aware a lot of the songs I love by the band are disliked by other fans. To each his own. 😉
Thank you for the video, Brian.
We were able to get Medazzaland on import in the UK.
Yes, a lot of technological firsts by Duran Duran over the years - especially this one. Nick Rhodes, not only taking lead vocals on the opening track, was also the one 'pressing the button' to send Electric Barbarella into the internet universe for it to become the first ever single download.
I must be honest and say that I never warmed to this album (other than Big Bang Generation) and I ranked this in my 'top 14' at number 12.
Your giveaway is wonderful - the original track order of their debut album takes it to another level and the night mixes of Girls on Film and Planet Earth are just so very, very good.
Thank you Andrea. Number 12 huh? That’s pretty low.
Midnight Sun has always been my favorite on what is a pretty solid record. Not a whole lot of killer but very little filler, just solid without too many obvious singles. This is their most sonically interesting album as it just doesn't have the obvious hooks but so much unusual music that somehow works. When I have time for an album or I'm working and just want to put something good for background, this is definitely in the rotation.
Nick Rhodes
One of my favorite DD album. So fragmented but yet so enjoyable. Of course it's experimental but in a good way. I remember when I heard for the very first time Electric Barbarella in December of 97 and I thought "this sounds in the same mood of Rio" while Out of my Mind was once again in the Wedding Album mood. Between these two masterpiece, lot's of experimentation with a particular mention for BBG🙏
It would be nice if Medazzaland were remastered and released in its original form. The demo version of "Midnight Sun" is much longer and has amazing guitar and drum work.
Great album! Mystery, pain, spooky, sonic bliss. Now the band's social media manager is posting coloring books
Ain't that the truth........
A masterpiece
Love this record! Glad you enjoyed it too. Shame “Undergoing Treatment” wasn’t your bag - I love how quirky it is. Not your typical closer but I love it for being different like the rest of Medazzaland. Love the door SLAM at the end. Totally agree it sounds like a Beatles song... actually Paul McCartney’s solo song “Uncle Albert” comes to mind. Keep up the reviews! Enjoy them
I didn’t even consider the Beatles solo stuff. Their catalogs are so vast. Thanks for the comments
I agree. It took me a few listens but eventually the quirkiness grew on Me. I don’t think it should have been the last song. I would have put So Long Suicide as the final track.
@@RR64434 That's an excellent choice for album closer, I agree!
Silva halo and Be my icon are out of this world!
When this album was released, it immediately was in my Top 2 albums. It is now in my Top 3 after the release of 'AYNIN'. 'Medazzaland' is perhaps their most brilliant album IMO.
I didn't catch this tour, because, I saw their warm-up show for the tour for free at Mohegan Sun Wolf Den. Back then their set-lists pretty much never changed so I didn't do the actual tour.
Yes Brian, Sting's debut album is 'Dream of the Blue Turtles', which I still have on vinyl.
I encourage folks to listen to the Demos/Alt versions of this album. The copy I have is 'Medazzland: The Demos'. Also, on Record Store Day a couple years back, Duran finally released the full show of that tour on vinyl and cd called, "Thanksgiving Live". I had the edited promo version of that since1997 ('Pleasure Island'). I also have the bootleg of my warm-up show. :D
I never really got into this album. It was so different in so many ways. I wish John would have stayed but around this time John was doing both medazzaland and power station project but quit both projects and checked himself into rehab. Warren Cucurullo is a awesome musician. I may have to rediscover medazzaland myself.
Do it!!
Such an interesting album! Of course I knew that was Nick reciting the Medazzaland words on the opening song. Electric Barbarella...I remember watching the video from the CD...very funny video! Looove Out of my Mind... that Arcadia sound I love! Who do you think you are...really like! Be my Icon...about groupies. Didn't like the song back then but sounds so cool now. Midnight Sun...one of my favorite Duran songs ever! Never get tired of listening to this beautiful song! 💖
I love Buried in the sand, far better than the rocky tracks, and think that Warren is actually the best guitarist of Duran Duran. He played for Frank Zappa in the album Joe’s Garage. Well, Zappa always chose amazing musicians. Warren’s creativity in the lowest points of Duran Duran’s career (excluding the Wedding album) helped to keep the band afloat. Also, he made with Nick Rodhes the electronic experimental project TV Mania, which is great, although I don’t think it is your cup of tea. Despite some disagreement, a great review for a criminally underrated album.
Great albums pity it did not have the song Ball and Chain from the Japanese version. One of my favourite albums.
Great album, although a bit unfocused (a common problem with DD). Love it when they go to different places
Awesome album 😙
I bought the Maxi CD (aka 12") of Electric Barbarella that had 3 different mixes plus the video, and Out of my Mind (perfecto mix), Sinner and Saint! loved this cd, but for some reason at the time I never bought the album
Nick Rhodes - Lead vocal on Meddazaland
Nick rhodes
For me I’m a fan since 81....I love this album.... Medazzaland, Out of my Mind incredible agree with you on the weaker tracks. This Pop Trash and Liberty are my fav 3 after the first 2 albums and AYNIN💜
Nick Rhodes :-)
This is one I have loved since its release. It’s absolutely brilliant. Just like Pop Trash bro!
Oh I was gonna mention in my video the difference between Medazzaland and pop trash and I forgot to do it.
Pop Trash isn't even a proper DD album, it is a TV Mania album with Simon only singing Nick's lyrics and released under DD's name. At least it's still better than the execrable Meddazaland.
Nick Rhodes was the voice over. Didn't know that until I listened to it today.
Who do you think you are could be sung by oasis. It was a very 90`s British grunge rock sound. This song came out when the oasis was at its peak. Listen to this and then listen to any oasis song you will hear the similarities.
I made a video called Medazzaland Reimagined Live, to get to some kind of root of this album. Perhaps check it out. I know the sound quality is poor but at 2K video quality setting it's slightly better. You'll be glad to know Undergoing treatment is just a quick clip at the end.
Lol
I hate Warren but love the song Michael have a lot to answer for
Morning Brian hope you well dude.
Nick Rhodes was vocalist on the opening track.
I just want to say first off the biggest negative on this album is the over all production quality very muddy...
I don't know how you feel but I would have loved William orbit all over this.
Favourite song for me is midnight sun ...a very very personal song to me followed by Micheal,a beautiful hauting track...enchanting.
Under going treatment was also a stand out track-why?
I feel that lyrically this depicts a very raw & angry state of mind for the band a genuine dig at the music industry and the fickle nature of consumers.
The music it's self sounds as if it were written in a lunatic asylum.
I love the dark nature of this album, the only down part the glam rock riffs rite Brian?
Loved opening track & buried in the sand.
I loved silver halo beautifully atmospheric could see this piece of music in a horror movie.
Nicks absolutely amazing
Nick Rhodes was the vocalist on Medazzaland. Good rediscovery of this album. This is actually my least favorite Duran album.
Wow. Why do you think that is?
@@RedMugMusic I think I was expecting something different from Duran Duran at that time, and there wasn't a song that really blew me away on this album. I would say Big Bang Generation was the closest.
I remember how I asked you to rediscover the 1st album. You heard me! :)
Absolutely!!
Nick Rhodes on vocals. I NEVER skip tracks, just sayin’ 😀
Yeah that’s what I’m talking about
I have a difficult time with this one. The layered/distorted production reminds me of Bowie's Outside or Death In Vegas' Dead Elvis from around that time but overall not as effective. It's an interesting album with some dark/alternative themes and some good songs on this but i'm glad when it's finished because of the dismal mood throughout.
Dream of the blue turtles is the title
Nick Rhodes did the vocals for Medazzaland. (Does this give am ANY better chance at getting that album? ...😁)
Talked
Nick sang on Medazzaland...great album!
It was Nick.
Some of the lyrics were written by Nick, like Be my icon
Yea he often contributes to the songwriting process.
Familiar with all the tracks (I discovered this album only a few years ago when going through their discography) but for some reason it’s my first time hearing 5. Who Do you think you are? - sounds like it could be an Oasis song.
It does sound like an oasis title for sure. Lol
N.R.
Did you actually call it “Please Please Tell me Now”? I’m shaking my head a bit but I won’t give you too hard of a time because I know you are a huge Duran fan.
Nick Rhodes was the vocalist on the song Medazzaland.
Interestingly enough I’m a big fan of “Buried In the Sand”; loved the Middle Eastern vibe
Did I really? How funny. Thanks for letting me know. It’s easy to get words mixed up when shooting videos. I once called a drum stick a guitar stick. Thankfully I caught it in editing and took it out. Just so dumb!!!
Classic album??
Not even close to being a classic.
Good review if only radio station supported the band
NR
It was Nick on the song Medazzaland.
I actually prefer Buck Naked to Be My Icon
It’s so much fun
Silva Halo is an A-side... ummm its ON the album... and its DEF not throw away.
You know that song was literally the A side to out of my mind, right?
@@RedMugMusic it was the b-side to the single just to preview a track from the upcoming album. B-sides aren't just tracks that didn't make it to the album. This one actually did ;)
@@adamlewis5073 I know
That is why I didn't include Silva Halo with my bonus tracks from Medazzaland.
Electric Barbarella is one their best pop dance songs.Out of my mind is dub version is one of their best darkish songs. Also Big bang generation.Oomm has also very very good gothic dark video...But the rest is boring crap. Also,no John...They had to split after his exit, iam sorry..
Honestly mediocre album imo, but electric barbarella & midnight sun were bangers
I'm a lifelong DD fan since I first saw them perform Planet Earth on Top of the Pops when I was 11, but Medazzaland is the single worst, most unlistenable load of utter rubbish they ever released. The only thing on it is Out of my Mind. The album is not "experimental;" go to Blur's 13 and Beck's Odelay for that, both released at around the same time and both are infinitely better. It is not hard to see why even John Taylor called it a day during it's recording.
Te vi el año pasado y no me gustó tu análisis del Duran Duran de Warren Cuccurullo. Si el no hubiese llegado, esta banda no sería de culto.
Sucks.
Nick Rhodes
