I’m a native of Nashville and as a child, teen and adult we went there all of the time. We never got tired of the theme park. I also worked there as a high schooler. I miss the Amusement Park so much.
Went there many times with my grandparents as a child. We traveled from Oxford Mississippi to Nashville just about every summer. Great memories of that amazing place.
A big contributor to the decision to close the park, was the feud between Opryland management and the Nashville school board, that started when Opryland asked the school board to reconsider their plan to move the first day of school to before Labor Day. Opryland pointed out that this change in the school schedule would interfere with their long-standing practice of offering summer jobs to high school students, and the school board replied that Opryland doesn't run the Nashville school system. In an attempt to find an alternative source of labor, Opryland purchased the old Executive Inn on Murfreesboro Rd and converted it to dorms for migrant workers that they brought in from Texas, but that turned out to create other problems. The resulting changes along the stretch of Murfreesboro Rd between the Executive Inn and the airport, can still be seen.
I despise everyone involved in the decision to close Opryland USA for one reason: GREED. They took something special and unique from all of us who cherished summers and holidays at Opryland and replaced it with a dumb mall.
It's the same with Disney World here in Orlando. The Corporation is more concerned with money than making it's main customers happy. The only difference is Disney World has so much land it doesn't need to close a park to make way for a mall.
