I've been playing The Amazing Grace and the Silent Night for the Local Nursing Home Neighbors and churches for the past 20 yrs. with almost no lessons or understanding of how it works. But, by the Grace of God, it's been coming out. And, amazingly, my audiences, especially the elderly and other shut in and lonely people always seem to love it! Now, thanks to you, I understand my harmonica much better, and maybe able to add a bunch of new songs to my repertoire. I am not a musician and don't really read music but I get it now In less than ten minutes I can play a scale and I am a first timer. Thank you Kerin Gedge - you've got it going on man!
My great grandpa past away last year, and he was very, very well known for his harmonica skills (amongst family and friends at least). He would play all the time at his church, and it was always the highlight of everybody's day. I inherited one of his harmonicas, and while I listened to him play in my entire twenty years of life, I've never actually practiced it with him, at least not that I remember. This definitely helped out a ton since I'm learning how to play. Thank you for the tutorial!!

Thank you. This helps a lot. I never knew any of this and tonight I bought my first harmonica (actually my second after grandpa gave me my first... and perhaps I had a Hohner at another point). I intend to become quite proficient with it. This has to be the cutest, most minimalistic instrument and when I'm ready, I'm going to impress the pants off everyone in the streets and everywhere I go. It should be quite the show.
Wow I didn't know there were different notes while blowing or inhaling. That's why it sounds so nice to blow into more than one hole as it makes a third in most cases.
I'm learning this cause my grampa played never met him tho and I got his harmonica he died the wee before I was born I wanna learn this for him I got his harmonica the one he used in bands
Playing harmonica is really REALLY good for asthma! It's excellent excercise, and a great way to learn to control your breathing. I'm asthmatic, and it's fantastic Therapy.
I too have asthma, and personally, the harmonica has done more good than bad for my health, I’m still confused as to why mine plays the notes in reverse order though.

check the website of ur harmonica and learn its' notes if you don't even have a brand name on it then download a music tuner app to your phone then learn the notes by urself

I just bought a set of harmonica at a neighbors yard sale. I used to play guitar and was learning the fiddle, till my house burnt down with everything in it! I intend to learn !
Feel like explaining the whole story on how I got my harmonica so might as well do it here. Back up to when I was 5 years old (I swear this will make sense soon) my mom showed me how to do bird calls with my hands. I thought nothing of it and forgot after a while. A week ago I remembered and started doing it again. I figured out multiple calls (ex. Morning dove, barn owl) and I did it in front of my step dad, he said "you know what, I'm buying you a harmonica." (Yes that is his exact words) Then he ordered one, fast forward to today and here I am with a harmonica.

Oh! Sounds a bit confusing to remember, but much more intuitive and logical than a guitar. There are a toy harmonica, my daughter buy looong time ago and never played. I always liked its whiny, sentimental sound, but never was able to wrap my head around how this thing actually functions. Sometimes i squeeze a good... something out of it, but obviously unable to recreate it ever again. Your video just popped up in my recommendations and now i definitely try to play something on the thing 😂 Thank you!

Thank you - this was very clear and helpful. Even though I knew the holes and notes, and had even written them out on paper on the treble clef, this video showed me patterns I'd somehow missed. I've watched numerous other videos on beginning harmonica, but this was the easiest to understand.

I went to the stationary store to buy a notebook and two pens, but I ended up buying a harmonica coz the lady at the cash register said she doesn't accept card unless the bill exceeds 10 euros.
The tones are sorted the way, that when I breath into the instrument, I get all notes for a C Major chord, when I breath in through the instrument, I get all tones of a G7 chord, that also replaces a F Major chord.
Phenomenal. Absolutely phenomenal. Thank you, I couldn't figure out why I wasn't able to get those notes. Of course, I'm always forgetting to "breath in"!

+Fresh Blossom It can also be wrong technique. When drawing on the 7 hole, the tip of your tongue needs to be further away from your front teeth (i.e. further back in your mouth) than when playing the lower notes.
@@KerinGedge There is a very specific tongue position that allows you to play all draw notes nice and clean except 7, 8 and 9. Beginning players who have this issue can fix it by lowering their tongue and moving it a little further back.
I'd say learn chromaric harmonica, but even then you'll only be able to play the minor keys relative to the major key the harmonica is is... e.g. chromatic harminica in c major will allow you to play in a minot etc.
2 things. 1. You can’t really blow into only one hole so you will blow about 2/3 holes at once, only that the middle one will be the loudest. 2. These harmonicas can be in various tones. I have a G one and my friend has a C.
thanks for the comment... but with practice you CAN blow into one hole only ! But in truth, and I tell everyone this, it doesn't matter if you don't because the holes on either side harmonize with each other... on your second point you are correct, but it doesn't matter because the hole numbers will be the same no matter what key your harmonica is in... if your harmonica is not in C, turn my tutorials down and follow the arrows and you will see what I mean.

That comes with practice im afraid... after a while you get a feel for the distance between holes and it becomes second nature

+Fresh Blossom It can also be wrong technique. When drawing on the 7 hole, the tip of your tongue needs to be further away from your front teeth (i.e. further back in your mouth) than when playing the lower notes.
I've never had this issue.
@@KerinGedge There is a very specific tongue position that allows you to play all draw notes nice and clean except 7, 8 and 9. Beginning players who have this issue can fix it by lowering their tongue and moving it a little further back.
I've probably been doing that unconciously... why don't you do a tutorial on it and I'll share it on my community page?
How do play any other scale than major?
I'd say learn chromaric harmonica, but even then you'll only be able to play the minor keys relative to the major key the harmonica is is... e.g. chromatic harminica in c major will allow you to play in a minot etc.

I think my harmonica is too cheap. I can't breath in hole 2 and all after 5 sounds like garbage, like it's flat. Really ace tutorial though!
Yeah, i've got some harmonicas that do that! A Hohner Marine Band is good to begin with, they're about $50 in NZ so probably around $30 in the US...

I play several instruments and my husband just gave my toddler a harmonica so of course I had to buy one and learn
2 things.
1. You can’t really blow into only one hole so you will blow about 2/3 holes at once, only that the middle one will be the loudest.
2. These harmonicas can be in various tones. I have a G one and my friend has a C.
thanks for the comment... but with practice you CAN blow into one hole only ! But in truth, and I tell everyone this, it doesn't matter if you don't because the holes on either side harmonize with each other... on your second point you are correct, but it doesn't matter because the hole numbers will be the same no matter what key your harmonica is in... if your harmonica is not in C, turn my tutorials down and follow the arrows and you will see what I mean.
