  • With the Han Solo trailer behind us and Star Wars Episode 9 ahead, we take a look back at Attack of the Clones, Anakin and Padmé's romance and just what makes Obi-Wan and Anakin's relationship wildly inconsistent.
We also talk about Buddhism, the Bardo Thodol and the picnic scene.

I very much agree with most of your content and its very well researched. However the concept of Anakin being an abuser is to far fetched and here are my reasons.
    1. Anakin was assigned to be Padmé`s personal jedi body guard. Which meant he had to be around her almost 24/7. They could not even be in seperate rooms. Being alone with her on an almost regular basis was unavoidable at times as she was in hiding and could not attract attention to herself. But rather than other jedi apprentices who would remain professional and distant, because of previous friendship Anakin and Padmé were anything but professional towards eachother.
    2. Padmé actually was mostly to blame for Anakins strong attraction and his ever growing, overwhelming desire for her. Anakin made it very clear on several occasions that he wanted to be her lover, not her friend. Padmé however, blew hot and cold. The was a strong sexual attraction on her part where she would encourage his advances then almost as quickly chastise him for it. These mixed signals confused and annoyed Anakin to the point of torment. It was only at the fireplace scene did she realise how emotionally invested Anakin had become in her, she saw how unfair and cruel she was being to him. When she said there was not a chance of them being together. He accepted it and walked away from her. Abusers DO NOT walk away!
    3. Anakins life experiences up until this point have not been the best. He was a slave on a lawless waiste land, forced to leave his mother behind on it, we all saw how easily Anakin made friends as a child, now he had none. There's no denying Anakin was exceptionally handsome with a strong connection to the force. All other padawans, his peers hated him for it! That's bound to breed anti socialism and which on most cases breeds sociopathic traits. Which in this movie Anakin has sociopathic traits but they are not developed yet. Where by the time of the 3rd movie he is a full blown sociopath. But not all sociopaths are abusers.
    4. The sand people captured, torchured and killed his mother for absolutely no reason. And Anakin lost his s***! Who wouldn't? The Sand people werent defenceless. His mother was. He did go to far by killing the women and the children. His own mother fed, clothed and sheltered him for 9 years of his life. He could not even look after her for the last 4 seconds of hers. Thats ALOT for a teenager to carry. The guilt, the helplessness and the grief would have been absolutely overwhelming him. Of course he is going to say things.... and do things he never meant. And he expressed his remorse at his actions against the sand people by saying he knew he was a "better than that"
    5. Anakin more than anything, deeply, deeply desired an emotional connection with someone. It was his most fundamental and intimate need. Not just with anyone, he needed a womans love. He has this massive empty whole in his heart left by his mother that could only be replaced by Padmé and no one else. I know its cliché, but his heart chose her. No one else and nothing else mattered. He needed her. He wanted a family. She only needed to say the word and he would have walked away from the order just to be with her. Why would Anakin abuse someone he held so valuable.
Anakin was immature, unsocialised and narcissistic with alot of emotional baggage. But he was always true to his heart. After he married Padmé did he mistreat her? Was she miserable? He treated her like a queen! Like she was the only women in the world because for him she was! in his world! His moments with Padmé are the only times he was ever truelly happy. Anakin Skywalker was a sociopath. But he was not an abuser.

That scene at 12:00 was surprisingly good for a few reasons. Not only is it the first scene where we can believe Anakin and Padme are lovers, as Anakin's reaction makes sense since they just fought for each other's lives in that Geonosian area before then, but it's finally a scene where Obi Wan grows as mentor. He abandons Jedi talking points to reach Anakin by convincing him to act in the same ways that made him admire Padme in the first place. Obi Wan finally demonstrated he knows how to reach Anakin on a human level, yet remain dedicated to the will of the Force as Qui Gon had taught him.
This wasn't followed up very well with their confrontation of Dooku, but it wasn't concluded badly either.
I'd hate to give the second film this handicap, but yes, if you skip over all the nauseatingly terrible scenes with Anakin and Padme, this film is exciting and interesting just anything else Star Wars has to offer. But we simply can't act like it's reasonable to dance around such an obvious elephant in the room. That failed romance really did crater the prequels far more what they deserved considering all the other great characters, action scenes, lore development, world-building, philosophical themes, etc.

Uggh an SJW. Anakin wasn't predatory in this film-he was just awkward. He does eventually (in the Clone Wars and Revenge of the Sith) show himself to be possessive af and their are some warning signs to be fair but he wasn't predatory in the movie.

@@karlydoc seriously the scene was not as awkward in the novel (the added 50% more dialogue). One of her handmaidens (just by the door) was eyeing her abt Anakin liking her and how he didn’t try to hide it and to make anakin stop looking at her she said that.

"There is no subject in the film, only text". That was an excellent line of analysis. I enjoyed the prequels, but a lot of the writing was clunky and felt as if it needed a critical eye to pass over it before it made it to screen.

These essays are brilliant and I can't believe you don't have more views and subs. I really gained a lot more insight into the prequels, and this also described a lot of my intuitive problems with the films.
I find it very interesting (not surprising) the amount of dislikes and comments from people upset that you correctly described Anakin's attitude toward Padme as "predatory affection". It's a good phrase and sums up what uncomfortable viewing this apparent love story was. With better writing, this could have been an interesting (and sadly, very relevant) story of a disturbed and unstable man, trained to deny all emotional expression, destroying the relationships he desperately craves. Anyway, great essay 👌🏻👌🏻

How a lightsaber works in the rain? Seriously? What the fuck are you talking about? It works the same as it does when it’s dry. There’s no hiss or steam. Idk why you think that choice is remotely a problem.

Tbh I feel like Anakin was seduced by Padme, he was pretty thirsty. Most of the times in Clone Wars they argued. I didn't honestly understand how Anakin can even love her when he choked her without even caring for her own safety or come back to the light.
Shit, Ahsoka had more of background with him. Even if there's more to her added, I honestly think it's a bit late for him or the new Star Wars universe to add more to her character. She's just not that interesting and Anakin loving her is a mystery to me. I feel like it was Lust mistaken for Love as he had a long time of no love. Him experiencing that type of stuff with a woman would've made any man or woman fall thinking it was love.

Not gonna lie Anakins game is cringe 😬 . Good thing he became a Jedi Knight and Padame is a good woman . But it’s perfect cause you can see how he became darth Vader the prequels where signs that was ignored so it’s perfect for that . As for effectiveness hell no don’t actually do what Anakins does to get girls .

This is easily the worst of the prequels and the worst of the original six star wars movie and most definitely in the bottom 3 of all star wars movies beaten only by The Last Jedi and Rise of Skywalker. And the biggest problem this movie botched was the one aspect of the movie that they should’ve gotten right and could’ve saved the movie and that’s the romance between Anakin and Padme. George definitely should’ve gotten another director to direct this. Part of the reason the Romance in empire strikes back was done so well is because George wasn’t responsible for the execution. He had Irvin Kershner directing it and lot of the romance scenes are ad libbed, especially the I love you, I know scene.
