Please create a video showing how to use the formula or formulas within exel to create the improvement / declining cells and can compete cells in order to create or modify our own. Thanks again, much appreciated.
I have my own ratings database, very basic. I just record my ratings beside each horse without reference to whether it won or not. Could a recent rating and best rating work ok rather than the most recent winning rating and best winning rating?
Absolutely. However you should also be recording the finish position of the horse and distance to winner. You can then look at how far away from it's best rating the horse is on average when it wins/places under different race conditions.
You can still get the spreadsheet by clicking the link on the bottom of the post linked to under this video. I can't confirm whether the Sporting Life website have changed their structure since this was done, but if they haven't it should still work.
I don't understand how a horse in the first example (Out of Nothing) has a red mark to say it can't compete but then has the highest improvement rating and is also a prime contender?
Thanks for the comment Steve. The spreadsheet is a tool to be used alongside your form analysis. The Compete column is based on the horses weighted average in comparison to the other runners. The Improver column indicates the expected level of improvement, just because a horse is the biggest improver doesn't always mean it's going to be improving to a level that can compete in todays race. The final Todays Level column is an estimate taking into account both the Average Weighted rating and the likely improvement and where that would put the horse in todays race if it improved to the estimated level. For Out Of Nothing what we can see is that based on past ratings there are better horses in the race, however if it continues to improve at the rate it has been then that could put it into one of the strongest runners in the race.
Race Advisor Thanks for the explanation Michael. I really enjoy your videos and your articles. I understand your point about this being a starting point for form analysis. However, in this case I would be wary of taking the Official Ratings at face value in a low grade handicap as they are manipulated by trainers to get their horses onto winning marks. Horses in this class are often 'declining' until they are ready to show significant improvement!
Steve Veasey Absolutely, you should certainly be careful in low grade handicaps. You can of course use this process with other ratings that are less well taken account of by the markets as well ;)
I think you could be right because if you look at the race results then you see the first and second horse are "Green" in the "can compete" column however the next 5 horses home are Red in the "can compete" column

Hi Craig, we've added this to our list to do :)
Is the last 5 starts as accurate as the last 6 starts? I can only get access to the last 5 ratings that I like.
Why dont you show the result to prove your system? Is that fair?

Can this spreadsheet still be downloaded and what website can be used to copy and paste ratings?
