I am 83, soon to be 84, years old. My husband and I have been married 65 years. In those years we have had seven children. We both have been interested in Barbershop Quartets and have gone to many shows. We also have passed that liking on to our family. Love your videos, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE. Keep 'em coming
Hope you enjoy this week's release! :) Please *share* the video if you can & *leave a comment* to let me know your thoughts, I'd appreciate it. Audio learning tracks are available on my website: julienneel.com See you next week for more a cappella & thanks for watching! :)
Whoo HOO! I requested this a while back, and sort of forgot about it, because it's not exactly "barbershop" material. Then here it is, almost four o'clock in the morning; I've worked almost through the night, and I check my subscriptions before falling wearily into bed, and find that Julien has sent me a wonderful present. And I can share it with everybody and still have it for myself! Thank you, thank you, Julien. I'm sure bunches of other people requested it, but I'm feeling very honored that you sang my favorite song.
Yeah I love Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong doing this, this man is also very good just discovered him tonight, while looking up covers of Anything Goes by Cole Porter.
My barbershop quartet purchased the learning tracks and sheet music for this 3+ years ago. I really enjoy singing the bass part and it's been great to have Julien as my guide. Ron Shaw (Perth, Australia)
This was done exceptionally well. I loved it. I used to sing this song in a few of my recitals. It has such a nostalgic feeling to it. Thanks for sharing your talent with us.
The simple for listener the most important enjoy the song. Leave the analysis to the specialist .If touch you the heart reaches the goal. In the barbershop he got a nice dress. Charming sight ,very nice voice , gorgeous lecture. I from heart congratulation. Gershwin and Julien together a miracle . I listen every day .
I'm in a barbershop quartet with some friends at my high school and watching your videos are really inspirational and I love them!!! Please post more!!
Absolutely astounding. I was open mouthed the whole way through that. Gershwin is my favourite old time composer, and you certainly do the old man justice!
We've listened to this about 20 times since you posted it. All agree we love it, your style, dramatisation in facial expressions excellent - enjoy that you have "ings" and consonants - subtle but THERE! Thank you 20x.
wow. My mom was in a band back in he day, and opened for some pretty cool people, and this was one she did so well. I wish she was alive today to see your version of it. good job!
I just found your videos. I'm subscribed and I'm not leaving anytime soon; you have an amazing voice (I don't mind adding that you're easy on the eyes too!). Still, that picardy third at the end... I politely disagree. :P
Happy to take song requests from my supporters on Patreon, as they enable me to create all these weekly a cappella videos. You're welcome to join & request tunes. :)
I think you masterfully achieved the arrangement you tried to deliver, sir. For me, I don't think I liked it as much as the original, for the sole purpose of groove. This arrangement felt... I dunno, too patchwork or too much rubato. Personally, if the notes kept to some tempo or groove, this would be more stellar than it already is. But that's me. Look forward to more of your work, Julian. :)
Thanks for your honest feedback. :) Try my best each time, this piece was a bit of a challenge, given that it doesn't really fit the barbershop setting.
***** I disagree however, you made good use of the medium (so to speak), as in, you took advantage of a chorous' ability to employ homophonic texture, allowing you to have a wider range of chords. As an instrumentalist, I still prefer versions like Billie Holiday's, but I think trying to fit a choral arrangement into the confines of a jazz band arrangement (groove, steady temp) would be detrimental. It's analogous to a film trying to emulate a stage production and thus eschewing the advantages of their unique medium, or a video game trying to emulate a film.
Trudbol doesn't sing only traditional barbershop. Trudbol sings (mostly) four-part harmony, four male vocal parts. As for 'the original," there are many settings of "Summertime," and it has been performed many ways. In fact, it is done many ways in various performances of the opera itself. It usually is highly rubato, as it is here, and not fast. It is a favorite among us jazz piano players, but I doubt many of us play it for dancing-- really just for listening. Or in a classical vein, we still play it rubato, like Gershwin's "Three Preludes," (one of which quotes this number).
LETRA Summertime George Gershwin Summertime And the livin' is easy Fish are jumpin' And the cotton is high Your daddy's rich And your mamma's good lookin' So hush little baby Don't you cry One of these mornings You're going to rise up singing Then you'll spread your wings And you'll take to the sky But till that morning There's a'nothing can harm you With daddy and mamma standing by
How About A Rendition Of," The Old Songs." & One called, " Freckles Was His Name, He Always Used To Get The Blame." I will be 82yrs old Dec. 4th, You bring me such Joy... I have loved Barbershop All My Life... Hope You will consider these two Songs....
Thanks for your feedback Jay, glad you enjoyed this week's release. :) I'm more than happy to take song requests from fans who support my music on Patreon (as mentioned at the end of my video), as this is how I can make all this sustainable. You are welcome to join the family & share your song suggestions: patreon.com/trudbol Thanks for your support!
HI Julien! I'm transcribing this arrangement as an exercise... thing is I'm halfway through it and I still can't make up my mind as to whether this arrangement was conceived in cut or common time... Care to shed some light on it? :) Great work by the way! First time I heard you singing this I literally cried in exhilaration!
Oh, that is so fine! Again, incredible breath control. Dead-on intonation, so I fancy I hear a "ring." George and Ira would approve. Recently I mentioned A Cappella Trudbol to a local high school choral director and he said he had used at least one of your arrangements. I have to tell him about this one. I have a question which will sound ridiculous, but I know you have a well developed sense of humor, so-- If I were to pledge X dollars-- okay, maybe $1-- through Patreon-- does that mean I fork over the $1, probably automatically, every time a play a RUclips like this one, or $1 for every performance out there, or every time there is a new one, or what? I have to know what my addiction is likely to cost me, or I could become homeless. like persons with other kinds of addictions, maybe listening with ear buds to a stolen player, huddled in my cardboard carton, in a community where we don't even have subways, let alone warm gratings. Talking northern Pennsylvania, here, winter. . . This would all be quite clear if I were a member of the discussion group, right? But first I would have to pledge, risking a life of vagrancy and petty crime. . .
Thanks and agreed. It's a dangerous bet to take an operatic aria that mixes elements of jazz and song styles of blacks in the southeast US of the early 20th century, make it barbershop, and then try to keep the delivery expressive. I like it when barbershop steps in foreign territory. Did my best for that! :)
***** I do appreciate that you're willing to try new and weird stuff though, so keep at it. This is one of the few channels that I actually watch every upload from.
My local high school band (of which I am a part of) did a show with a summertime them and included two variations of this song here's the link go check it out! FPCHS Marching Band - Summertime - FBA - 12 Straight Years Superiors
I'm a fan. Really. I loved almost all your creation thus far but to me this one is way off. Besides the melody which is instantly recgnizable in that song and which you nailed, the chord progression is also quite unique and instantly recognizable and to me, you missed it by a mile. I'm still a huge fan and keep them coming.

My pleasure Jane! I always need a little time to fulfill song requests, but I always get around. :)
An amazing cover of an amazing all-time-classic!
Thanks man! :)
My favourite Gershwin piece, favourite Fitzgerald recording and favourite Armstrong recording. And despite that this rendition is still fantastic!
Thanks Luke, I appreciate it. It is a bit daunting to have to face comparison to such names!
Yeah I love Ella Fitzgerald and Louis Armstrong doing this, this man is also very good just discovered him tonight, while looking up covers of Anything Goes by Cole Porter.

Absolutely gorgeous arrangement, and sung with such sentiment, wow Julien this one really swept me off my feet :)

It's quite warm in the southern hemisphere, you know. :)
i'm melting in my country :)
I'm very jealous then. ;c

This song is amazingly beautiful! Congratulations
I've always liked this song.
Same here. Not sure the barbershop setting is best for it, but it was a fun adventure to give it a go. :)
i love all of the songs you post don't stop making them!!!!
You've almost single handedly made Gershwin one of my favorite composers. Please, never stop what you're doing :D
Thanks David! If you'd like to support the artist, you can put a coin or two in my Patreon tip jar & help me with future creations. :)
Tu gères Juju !!!

You have a very beautiful voice and a impressive technic!! I'm happy that I found your channel.
Magnificent

J'adore ce style, j'ai cherché la musique original et je trouve finalement que cette version me convient mieux !
Super =)

You NEED to do a "bare necessities" one!
(Au fait tu te rappelles de moi? :) )
Love this, you should collaborate on a version of this with Avi Kaplan from Pentatonix :)
Thanks, and I'd love to, but you should tell Avi, not me. :)
If you want suggestions I'd say sing Celtic Thunder- Christmas 1915. Its an amazing song but it might be hard to make a Capella of it.
How About A Rendition Of," The Old Songs." & One called, " Freckles Was His Name, He Always Used To Get The Blame." I will be 82yrs old Dec. 4th, You bring me such Joy... I have loved Barbershop All My Life... Hope You will consider these two Songs....

Amazing CoWah He's French I think!
hookiebookie1 Yes, I'm French. I also speak English, but French is my first language.
Awesome! Thanks for replying, you're a great singer! :)

I like how he didn't even respond.
Very nice cover, but i thought you could sing "in the summertime" perfect, too.
Please ! IN THE SUMMERTIME !!!
Are you referring to "In The Good Old Summer Time"?
*****
No. I mean the version of Mungo Jerry - In The Summertime made in 1970
I love the Jerry version. It´s a total ear-worm. Please make a cover because the most of your covers are better then the originals. :)
Stewie G. aka dark hugs There you go Liked that song :)
***** oh yes man !
What's your vocal range?
I love how you do these, but how do you get everything in sync. I would love to be able to do a cappella like you
HI Julian. Love this track. Unfortunately the link to sheet music does not work any more. Can you help?
Excellent performance and arrangement, but I don't know if this one really works as barbershop.
Thanks and agreed. Clayton Comer and also I assume they could be considered renditions rather than variations I'm not sure if there is a difference
Where can you find the sheet music for this now? This arrangement is no longer available at BHS.
Can you cover stardust by tommy Dorsey or Michael bubles version?
Can you do Teenager in love?
what's the name of the guy on the left?
LOL :)
Been watching your videos (great stuff) this one made me notice you have like attractive lips.
Any chance of Moonriver?
It's kind of ironic cause I'm from Minnesota USA and we have 14 inches of snow :(
"Your momma's good looking???" :)
i absolutely hate this song. and you Still made it work. i do believe that, sir, is worth a subscription at least.
Good King Wenceslas please

Right?!
*****
It's a line from this song, but I got it wrong (It should be like, not love):
Frank Sinatra-How About You
You can do con te partirò
Happy to take song requests on my Patreon page (see video description above). Support the music you'd like to hear. :)
I think you should do the vasectomy song from Family Guy :-)
I've considered it, as well as "You Have Aids" and some other inappropriate barbershop tunes, but I worry it will upset some of my audience...
They won't do. Or you could put a disclaimer at the beginning. You have an excellent voice may I say!!
C'était parfait jusqu'au glissendo final qui ne s'imposait pas sur une chanson plutôt mélancolique...
