Trucks themselves don't make pot holes.
When Bitchumen/Asphalt is laid and cures, tends to be more pliable, or flexible.
However, over time (decades?), the bitumen tends to lose its elasticity and becomes rigid.
This is where cracks/fissures start appearing!

    Another load of nonsense.
It was announced ten years ago that in Australia BEVs would encounter road user charges around 2026. That's why I was an early adopter, to get the maximum free kick.
In time all vehicles will transition to a road user charge. Ideally road tolls and fuel excises will be abolished at the same time.
The issue is to come up with a practical and just system for collecting road use taxes that can go towards building and maintaining the road network. We already have toll collecting tags so there are a lot of technical possibilities for a convenient highly automated system likely involving a tag and the mobile phone network.

    • @micoots

The problem is the large majority of the money collected doesn't actually go to the roads. Those taxes go to a "general" tax category which is why no one can tell you how much is exactly collected.

Trucking corporations bribe politicians in many ways to push the cost of damage they do to the roads onto the general public. It is this MAINTENANCE cost that should be reflected in diesel fuel, but never is in proportion to the amount of damage they do. Construction costs should be borne by all users, in proportion to the amount of driving they do. Fairly easy to enforce because all cars have odometers that could be reported at tag renewal time and wrapped into the renewal fees.

@TEV Sam Evans, fantastic explanation of the situation on this tax issue in australia. Fantastic also that you will be fighting it in court. I would say that you should add another argument to your court case, that because Australia has to import most if not all of its oil products because it has no refineries or no oil productions, then fossil fuel vehicles cause a massive transfer of wealth from Australians to oil producing products countries, thereby also reducing Australia's currency and the purchasing power and standard of living of australians. On the flip side, because Australia has probably the absolute best renewable electricity solar/wind resources in the world, they could reverse that equation by getting rid of all oil imports and producing their own energy at near zero cost thereby boosting their currency and purchasing power and standard of living of all australians. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Eventually no vehicles will use fossil fuels. When that happens, the fuel excise lost will have to be made up somewhere else. Simple mathematics. We are all used to paying fuel excise. I drive an EV now and enjoy the fuel excise I am now saving. But as EV ownership increases so does the amount of excise paid reduce. It can't last. Simple mathematics again. This clearly has nothing to do with electric cars as the penetration rate is too low to account for that change. Most likely the percentage has dropped because other taxes have increased at a faster rate than petrol excise. Yes, this is what I was thinking, they may also stick cameras or radar like devices everywhere, to record where your vehicle goes with a transmitter built into your car that communicates with a central database, and to make things that much more convenient for them, they will have access to your bank accounts to scoop up your payment straight away !

Can only speak to my situation in the state of Minnesota USA where a reasonable flat annual fee is assessed for each EV which do go to the transportation improvement fund. I know some other states have much higher and less reasonable annual fees but here that is not the case. The concept is fair if applied to all vehicles regardless of fuel source. BTW trucks and heavy vehicles pay much higher annual fees for road repair and maintenance.

I agree that's it's a horrible idea for all the same reasons that you put forward. Doing the basic maths on my ICE car vs my EV and charging at home (no solar) I am paying around 15% of a tank of fuel for the same mileage. With the excise at 2,8c/km then that would add another 15% so total around 30%.....still way cheaper and once my solar is up and running then back to around 15%.
BS tax though, almost becomes pointless owning a PHEV. I think other governments are also talking about it :(

Removing subsidies on fuel tax credits, is a tax on consumers, who do you think is going end up paying it? It only goes to business... These arguments are simplistic at best and more likely deceptive.
Governments for years have taxed road usage via fuel excise, it is one argument to say that the trucks do most of the damage but taxing them results in higher prices for everything. Just pay your road tax like everybody else and stop complaining, be grateful governments have let it go so long trying to encourage take up.

Not a criticism of your reporting, but it is worth mentioning that full size truck registration is 10 plus thousand dollars a year per vehicle.
    Keep up the good work👍👍

Don't you PAY Road Tax in Australia ? The Government should bring in a General Road TAX on all cars Biased on the Co2 Emissions Like we do in the UK
The Higher the Emission the more your CAR Costs to ROAD TAX ?

Proves electric car push was a scam and not about the environment, you can't push electric vehicles then complain about loss of revenue from gasoline

Yes, they pay $40 billion in Indigenous welfare each year, and everytime somebody tries to properly audit that, they get shouted down as wacist, seems a bit suss.

Good. You have to pay to play. And there is a guy in Scotland, his Tesla was caught in the rain on the weekend and now it needs a new battery.
Tesla is blaming him and will not honor the warranty.
Got to love their customer service and the build quality.
That would never happen to a gas car.

Total ~ 8.8c NZ for 1000km then, about 7.9c Australian.
If we look at 50c (edit, it might be 44c or so per litre) fuel excise per litre here, at 10lt/100km, that is 100lt/1000km, and $50/1000km = 5c/km.
Not far off in comparison, but a lot higher than Sam states re Victoria's introduced 2.8c/km.
In fairness, all pay rego, all should pay something contribution to using the roads, but you have to ask how serious is this climate 'emergency' that sees us rushing into extremely costly renewables (at this stage of rollout).
Govco are going to ream all road users as much as possible, that's the bottom line.
